This map was exclusive to the PS2 and Dreamcast ports of Unreal Tournament and intended for a boss fight, but it had a very nice animating skybox and a comfy OST track. Pretty sure it was ported to the PC version too if anyone's interested.

I still don't understand how Spyro is able to draw the main game, which is pretty detailed and large scale, but also have enough triangle budget to render a 3D mesh skybox. That planet and its rings in the back isn't cheap on polys.

>> No.7139868

>>7139867
played it recently and though the same thing. overall pretty technically impressive for a ps1 game.

>> No.7139878

>>7139867
Ps1 had thw highest polygon throughput of its generation, when you aren't texturing polygons you get high precision verticies. Spyro used this for level of detail tricks too, a big green hill in the distance can just be a big green low poly shaded mound. If you get close it'll tessellate and texture itself with a minimalist texture. A few games utilized this technique excellently.

>> No.7139890

>>7139878
I get that gouraud shading is twice as cheap as a textured polygon, but it's weird to think PS1 maxes out textured polygon budget easily, but if you start moving to gouraud polygons suddenly the sky's the limit heh

The second one looks n64 to me based on how blurry the floor texture is. PS1 never looks like Vaseline smeared dogshit like that one, that’s N*ntendo’s thing

>> No.7139938

>>7139890
It is almost as if gouraud shading is cheap.
And N64 can't do more than 100.000 per second on vanilla microcode, which was a mistake. It can do up to 1mill with modified microcode.
PS1 can do about 180.000 with some texture mapping per second, and a bit more with gouraud.

I don't want to know how much a modern GPU can manage. Modern render rates are buried beneath layers of additional shader stuff.

>> No.7139941 [DELETED]

Another big favor for the ps1 is the performance analyzer developed by psygnosis. This was a standard tool for ps1 devs which allowed them to see exactly where and what was hurting performance and allowed the ps1 to massively improve fidelity of its games. No console had anything like this before this point.
