I am emulating PlayStation DOOM right now. On the same screen I play PC DOOM on, so there's no testing bias.
Remarkably, the total conversion of PlayStation DOOM for PC DOOM is... extremely dark for no reason. The levels are darker in the PC version than the PlayStation. I suppose I should release a "fix", it's almost unenjoyably unplayable because of it.

This. Stop complaining about how there's two separate ports that work on different things.
No, they cannot be merged together that fucking easily.
You want to know the reason why Zandronum is so behind?

There's a reason ZDoom's netplay is shit.

>> No.714893

I've been involved in projects before. These are essentially additional features on top of zdoom. They don't, from as far as I know, change the underlying foundation of how the game works or how modding works, and relatively speaking, I believe a joining of the three projects wouldn't cause much hassles. Relatively speaking, mind you. I'm sure there will be problems, but those could be resolved fairly quickly if the developers work hard at it.

>> No.714896

>It's really hilarious how many people think they can "just" be grouped together.
Nah, nah, nah. Think about this. All the developers of the source ports, come together and work as one. It gets done quicker, it supports all, has "better" online and whatever. The issue is the divide in the community. BOOM don't wanna play with (G)ZDOOM, and mostly (G)ZDOOM don't wanna play with Zand. I don't really care. It's useless drama to me.

>> No.714897

>There's a reason ZDoom's netplay is shit
Because Zdoom doesn't focus all of its time and energy on multiplayer

>> No.714905

Yes. As it's been said, the conversion is much darker than the emulated version.

>> No.714908

You're free to break off from a project and make a new linux distro instead of help contribute to projects with very similar goals. I get that, but instead of having the entire Linux community contribute to several different distros with the same goals, they need to come together on one or two distros. There's a comic about this, somewhere.

>> No.714918

>They don't, from as far as I know, change the underlying foundation of how the game works

But they do. Most of the ACS functions and Decorate commands don't work in online play at all. They need to be edited so they can work in online play.

...Because it doesn't work in online play.

>> No.714930

Decorates are an extension, but a very important extension. So that might be a significant problem.

Theoretically speaking, combining ZDoom with real multiplayer shouldn't be impossible. But it would require some work. The Skulltag drama probably amplifies this though.

>> No.714932

I thought it was because the people that took skulltag from the half-competent creator were only barely more competent themselves and loved to indulge drama.

But no, you're right; things like +SPECIES and+DONTHARMSPECIES tags are difficult to transfer to online play.

zdoom uses traditional lock/step networking doesn't it? i mean it's fine if you keep all engines on a lan in sync with each other, it's the problems that ensue when you try to do client/server over the slow, unpredictable internet. so zdoom's networking is basically lan-only. is this right?

>> No.714936

yes, it's so much easier to say people are fucks than to understand why you're not getting what you want as fast as you want

>> No.714940

Basically lan-only, yes. And even then, it's incredibly unreliable and prone to desynching depending on your cvar settings, how everyone loads/unloads the level, and if you sneeze in the right direction.

I test out The Shores of Hell, but most .wads/pk3/pk7 are made for DOOM II, which is a shame because I really like DOOM over DOOM II. It's not difficult to put newer monster classes in so it works for the Ultimate DOOM (10 minutes, 30 minutes at most to stomp out any bugs)
A real shame because id wanted a sawed-off shotgun in DOOM. Anyways, it's not difficult to actually set a spawn variable, replacing shotgun with supershotgun 50% or some monsters (cacodemon % chance to be replaced with a Pain Elemental) and a variable to double the amount of said monster for replacements.
Don't get me wrong, I like DOOM II and especially so towards the end, but... I think Ultimate DOOM is better.

If you guys want to get into monster spriting, you can check the resources pastebin in the OP post, I remember compiling some spriting tutorials I came across while lurking the ZDoom forums.

I haven't tested 'em myself, so if you happen to make something decent by following their instructions, let us all know about it

Also, if the Cyberruner spritedude is reading this, I would like to ask him to try to compile a monster spriting tutorial using 3D models. It would be greatly appreciated

>> No.715041

Well, depending on what you want, you could rip out a bit of it to just add the SSG zombie and gun in. I organized it fairly well so it shouldn't be too hard.

>> No.715052

I know what it does. I know that it works. I played your stupid super-hard-mode and it's stupid. Floors which hurt you are prominent in DOOM, sometimes you HAVE to run across them. But I can't 'cause I die. What you should do is make it so the player can get hurt on floors, but if a monster hits you, then you die. That'd make it fair. Just so you know, I got through to the Halls of the Damned before finding it impossible.

>> No.715058

>It's really hilarious how many people think they can "just" be grouped together.

This thread is a good example of why I'm no longer a CS major. I realized programmers often have to work for people who've never written a line of code, but think they know more about software than the people who actually make it.

>> No.715076

I did say I was looking into it, which I am. It's not a simple task. I thinkvI might just make abplayer class that's immune to the floors and use that for S&D and ultimate.

Anyways, that shouldn't be the main draw anyway. UV is about hard enough for most with all the new monsters.

>> No.715079

I've written several lines of code, mind you! In all seriousness, this isn't something impossible. It's more of a drama thing then an architectural incompatibility thing. These are three different projects with different goals that do not conflict and work on the same foundation. Decorates and ACS isn't balls hard to develop for online play. There are challenges, but they aren't anything out of the ordinary when it comes to coupling projects together. Open source projects do this kind of stuff often.

I used MD2 Viewer 1.4 to view and capture player model rotations from Quake 2 models -- it's easy to use, and getting shots like the spritesheet you posted is relatively simple. Some of the real tricky stuff is polishing it, getting it into Doom, making it look right, and allowing the in-game color sliders to be used. I learned through analyzing existing skin files and changing things around until things worked.

I do know that based on what monster you want to replace you will need different frames; some monsters have more frames for attacking, like Barons, but no gib animation.

It's a painful process for me to even create one sprite. It sucks up my time and I'm not afraid to admit that. I know what I"m good at and what I'm not. I wouldn't simply give someone a job and not return the favor.

I like to participate in the specialization in the division of labor. It's basic comparative advantage, anon. The most economic way to go about this isn't to spend hours on something I'm simply not good at. It's to pursue and persuade others with skills that I don't have to join me. Am I being persistent? Most definitely. Am I being a bit pathetic? Most probably. However, that's business for ya'. It's basic economics and that's how production gets done. It gets done through unorthodox methods, not by looking at someone from a hill top and throwing reaction faces at them whistle bitching and moaning about their advertising methods.

Get fucked.

That is much easier said than done. My way will end up working if I can get it to.
The problem with that is, a lot of those custom monsters use that the "fire" and "slime" damage types (and I'd rather not go through them all one by one). If my ACS script works it'll protect the player from floors and allow them to be killed by all monsters.

>> No.715359

And another thing. Everyone's busy. Everyone has an opportunity cost. Working with me absorbs time from whatever they wish to do. "I'm busy" means that his opportunity cost for working with me, for no favor in return, is awfully high. High by whatever metric you wish to use (don't use utils). However, you don't stop pursuing labor because it has a cost greater than zero. You offer opportunities, you offer benefits, you propose something that would make the opportunity cost of working with me seem much lower than it appears on the surface. It's economics, baby. Production doesn't start with everyone holding hands and agreeing on something the first instance. It gets started by making many transactions, and those transactions may only happen if you get down and grovel. Goals aren't done through class and style, they're done through hard work and persistence. Stop being a child. This is the real world.

>that requires no talent
Nothing requires talent, it requires skill. Even if it's bare minimum skill. I don't question your abilities and you shouldn't mind. I suck at anything that requires an ability to draw. Even simple editing I tend to mess up on. Visually speaking, I'm very short sighted and any attempt to look farther than 5 minutes when it comes to a sprite ends with a blank thought.

I can certainly code. I'm a damn good coder at that. I have experience in programming and I've been going at it for a good while. I can even make a few sound effects, albeit fairly primitive. However, I simply cannot do anything involving fine art.

I bring my resources to the table. Whether that be labor or even capital. I'm not an "idea guy."

>Shut up and do it or shut up and get lost.
Haha, you don't quite understand what the division in labor offers. Games, movies, bridges, buildings, factories, and even something as simple as a Doom mod are hardly ever done alone. Or if they are done alone then they're usually sub par. When you simply cannot do something and you see that you're being inefficient, then you search. You search hard and you engage in a mutually beneficial transaction. If admitting that you're bad at some things and good at other things is something to loath, then I'm surprised you're not constantly disgusted when you sit in your house. Because this entire society is the product of such actions.

Don't like my attitude? Well this labor market is fairly elastic, so frankly I do not care.

That kind of mindset applies to more modern game engines where the labor is intensive and learning everything is difficult and time-consuming; that doesn't really apply to Doom modding, where any jackass with some free time can quickly learn how to modify the oodles of existing sprite and audio assets to suit his needs. And as others have mentioned, the /pol/ map featured some really goofy sprite work and was fine for it, mainly because the guy made a great map for it in the first place; the custom assets were really just icing on the cake.

Hell, here's a rework of a plasma rifle I got from another mod, which I recolored to make it more fitting alongside the other weapons I'm using in a mod I'm working on. Took me a few hours, but the results are worth it, and this is from someone who is by all means totally incompetent at any true sprite art work. You learn to do what you can, and get better at it over time. But you started coming off as arrogant, and now I've had enough of this. Why are you talking like we're getting paid? This is for fun. This is for making something for people who love it; and you're talking about labor and economics. Quite frankly, if I didn't know any better I'd say you're in damage control mode. Instead of listening to people who are telling you something, you're lashing out at anyone who gives you attention. I gave you a simple idea. It's silly. You're silly. It's not begging when you offer something in return, at least by my definition.

>What I loathe is how much of an insufferable stuck-up cunt you're being

When I made the shrek actor for pol.wad, I used sprites ripped from GBA game. Because the game was a sidescoller, shrek didn't have any sprites that aren't facing to the side. >Why are you talking like we're getting paid?
Because I'm ready to offer a pay. Even if it's nothing wild.

>Instead of listening to people who are telling you something
Have you ever called your local ISP because your internet went down and they told you to reboot your modem even though you've already done it a million of times? The suggestions offered have been tried numerous times in the past. I even tried again on this recent project just to see if I was underestimating myself. That was wrong. I asked for help, even offered something in return and all I've gotten is butthurt by 2 or 3 individuals that don't like that I'm posting more than once per thread.

Let me tell you a story. Back in high school I was in a pottery class. Everything I did somehow screwed up. I was given the job of making a simple plate out of a slab of clay and I even messed that up. It wasn't flat at all and by the time I realized what I had done, the clay had dried up and it wasn't usable anymore. The art teacher asked, "How did you do this?" I replied, "I'm simply bad at art." It's a fact. Anything that requires a large amount of visual perception to get right, I screw up on. Even editing sprites usually end in Doom. I admit this, I get over it. People are good at some things and bad at others. The second step is to find a substitute. If I can't draw then someone else can. And so this is the first stop. If you wish to be self-sufficient then that's fine with me, but don't tell me to become self-sufficient when there's no necessity to.

Frankly, I'd say on the contrary. Many of the most memorable mods and megawads are entirely one-man efforts, while plenty of the R667 projects, despite having large ensembles of developers (for Doom mods) tend to be seen as sub-par by the larger community. Just peruse the Cacowards and see the number of one-man efforts that get accolades for their top-notch quality, and you'll quickly see that the number of developers has little bearing on quality for Doom mods.

Again, as I said, Doom modding doesn't require nearly as much work to learn and accomplish. You don't need lots of people to delegate tasks to in order to get things done in a reasonable time frame with good quality. Instead of whining about how we don't agree with your capitalist whatever view on task delegation, efficiency, and whatever other nonsense, take the time to start learning some of these skills and you can get started.

And, I'll be frank here - all this yammering about needing sprite artists and whatnot tells me you're far more focused on that than the meat of any wad - the gameplay. You should be wary of falling for the same trap so many first-time modders step into, that is getting focused on various gimmicks to make the mod, rather than keeping the basic gameplay and level design in mind. All the sprite artists in the world wont help your mod if you don't have something fun as a foundation to hold the whole thing together.

Fun is subjective. I'm talking about the objective side of things.

Chex Quest 3 took 10 years. If the Chex Quest team had 10 years then they would have made something a lot more advanced than Chex Quest. What applies to interchangeable products (which is what economic theory assumes is being compared, not unique items) does not necessarily apply to art, which is where your assumption fails. Sometimes it does, but it cannot be applied consistently.

A single person can make "good" art better than a group of people can. Sometimes not. Sometimes a person that can make good art consistently can't make good art anymore. Sometimes someone that makes crap art will make a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece and not be able to create anything else as good. Etc, etc.

>A single person can make "good" art better than a group of people can
This can happen in nearly any sector if the conditions are right. If I give Bobby 10 years to make a painting while I give a team of guys 5 days, then of course Bobby will win. He might not be as good as the others combined, but he has the time. It's a battle of resources. Time, money, labor, et cetera.

>Sometimes someone that makes crap art will make a once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece and not be able to create anything else as good.
Subjectively speaking, that can happen. However, from the objective side (the formalistic side of art), this isn't very true. A master piece isn't necessarily defined by its skill as a crafted work, but by how it communicates to the audience. Hemmingway couldn't write prose for shit, but at least he was able to express meaningful themes to a very wide audience. Sorry I transferred the example to writing, but I have a better grasp of writing than of fine art.

Sure, it makes more sense for the sous chef to hire somebody to mow his lawn than it does for him to do it himself, but it'll be perfectly efficient for him to cook his own meals.

What you're doing is saying that he can't possibly cook his soup as well as a team could, because he isn't as efficient at pot-stirring or vegetable chopping as someone that specializes only in pot-stirring or vegetable chopping.

No, Bobby can make a better painting in 5 days than a team of guys in five days if Bobby has a good idea for a painting or is more inspired than the other guys. This is assuming they're all at the same level of competence and experience, but could hold true even if they're more experienced. This also isn't taking into account whether or not the 5 guys will work well together or whether they can produce a coherent piece from 5 different viewpoints.

This does not hold true for other jobs where quality isn't subjective and doesn't widely vary. You don't need to be inspired to make good welds or paint the outside of a building. You just need to be competent. And in those cases, having more competent individuals involved in the project will result in a better project 99% of the time.

I am saying that. A team will be able to pop out soups of the same quality quicker. Though with mowing his lawn, I'm not saying that the results won't be sufficient for him. I'm just saying the use of his time (assuming that he has expendable monetary funds) will be a poor allocation of resources. When we abstract down to daily chores, the costs become marginalized. When you scale up production, then it becomes a problem. The content I want in my wad tells me that I'll probably need to outsource labor. People here just want to create fun wads for themselves, and that's okay; however, what I wish to do is probably going to require another person else I won't be satisfied with the product or the costs I had to endure to make sprites.

- Fixed S&D and Ultimate modes a bit. You won't get gibbed by floors anymore, or even damaged by them. Consider it an advantage you get for being so fucking hardcore. (GZDoom Only)
- Added M_DOOM graphic

3D floors are now supported by Cyberrunner more-or-less completely! Unfortunately, there are a few technical limitations to be aware of.

- 3D floors less than 16 units wide on the Z axis will sometimes not register collisions. The thinner, the less likely you'll collide.
- 3D floors bound to the same sector that are less than 16 units apart have undefined behavior. Do not rely on them.
- 3D floors touching the floor cannot be walljumped off of. This is due to the 3D floor check only going down, since it's a pretty expensive check.
- Non-solid 3D floors can be walljumped off of. There is no way to detect if a 3D floor is solid. If there was, I wouldn't have to create the damn 3D floor checking ACS.

It's a shame that these limitations are in place, but it's the best we have. Regardless, the addition of 3D floors to Cyberrunner's repertoire vastly extends the possibilites maps can take.

>> No.717145

These guys have it nailed. It looks really good, you just need to lengthen the body in proportion to the head. Especially the legs, not to emphasize the femininity but rather because that's where the majority of a woman's height comes from.
Torso should be two heads high, hips should be one, legs should be three or four.

>> No.717148

>legs should be [...] four
I thought the norm was three heads?

>> No.717150

If you compare the model's legs to the rest of her body, one leg is about the same length as from the bottom of the waist (or the start of the thigh, rather) to the top of the head.

So Cyberrunner's legs seem a bit too long for her body, or rather, he body might be a bit too small for the size of her legs.

>> No.717152

TNT comes first.
UV is the only difficulty

>> No.717157

The whole issue can be fixed by scaling the head down to 0.8 to 0.75 of what it was before.

>> No.717160

For flat feet, yes.
But keep in mind the Runner has chunky heels, I assume for storing rockets, so that adds some extra height. Which means the actual head height is even lower--the measurement would be better cut off at the ankle, rather than the flat of the foot.

Not stiletto heels, that would be terribly unrealistic!

>> No.717170

tl;dr: move hips up slightly to reduce torso height and increase leg height

>> No.717194

Her head looks larger from this angle because the helmet is elongated that direction. Also it's a helmet, so that makes it look larger. Larger heads look more childish

Not particularly, but I didn't intend her to be the idealized 7.5-8 heads tall either. (Didn't think much of it really)

This is a model I made a while back that I used as my base. She is a bit on the smaller side, but I guess that's just because it's what I identify as being feminine. As it is she's just a smidge over 7 heads high, which is still relatively normal. I can make small changes, but I can't really alter proportions THAT much at this stage without fucking with the UV's and texture stretching.

Since the helmet is drastically thinner than it is long scaling it down evenly makes her look fairly normal from the side but thin headed from the front. I'll play with it. --Revenant, mini-revenant and cyberdemon rockets w/revenants are now all shootable a la Burl Tumb (Thanks Eric!) and are working correctly. The cyber rockets w/revenants have the same HP as a revanant (300) and the normal revenant rockets have the same HP as a mini-revenant (40.)

--The shootable revenant rockets and cyber rockets w/ revenants when shot will cause the revenant riding them to die before your eyes, leaving a corpse behind. They will still drop live revenants as normal if they collide with something.
--The cyberdemon and mini cybers now have one less tier of fractal rockets that will result from their rocket fire. They're both still pretty ridiculous to fight, but not quite as much.

Previous updates from recent versions for those that missed them:

--The Mancubus, Arachnotron, Baron Of Hell, Hell Knight and Cyberdemon now all leave miniature fractal versions of themselves upon death.
--The Mancubus, Arachnotron, Baron of Hell and Hell Knight now all have a 50/50 chance to use their normal projectiles or their fractal patterned projectiles instead of just the fractal pattern shots.
--The Baron of Hell and his mini version shoot A LOT more often.
--The Cyberdemon and mini Cyberdemon shoot rockets with revenants riding upon them as well as fractal rockets, they have a 50/50 chance as to what they will shoot.
--The Plasma Rifle altfire no longer causes lag when fired, even in large outdoor areas.
--The smallest tier of fractal imp has been removed from the game.
--When injured players have a small (1/255) chance of spawning 4 miniature fractal marines. The marines are friendly and melee-only.

Also, I realize the exploding demons are an issue due to many maps tossing the player into melee situations with large numbers of them. I'm going to change what they do when I figure out what I want to do with them, probably pretty soon. I'm open to suggestions about the demons or any other part of FRACTAL DOOM.

Now I'm going to bed, see you guys later.

Dynamic lights are okay used properly, otherwise they're a clusterfuck of horrid.
Brightmaps are cool, they help make things look better, and when used properly, really help make a monster, or a weapon or a texture.

No, but I am. Hi.
She wasn't designed to be sexy, actually! I didn't really sketch her with any titillation in mind, just mostly lots of retro sci-fi. Spriteguy went for a more athletic approach when he agreed to model the armor, and I think it strikes a perfect blend of sci-fi and gotta-go-fast.

I'm surprised people ask about this and not the vestigial breasts and ass, which aren't as easily justified. At least you can say the boots have rockets in them.
The real answer, though, is because it was another stylization of the retro sci-fi design, like the helmet. My biggest inspiration was Bubblegum Crisis, and the Runner's design is actually a step DOWN from that.

Still, you can notice a bit of Arcee if you gander at the torso. Overlapping bands on the waist, primary-color breastplate and fauld.
