Is this game actually an abomination even if you're a fan of old From Software games, or did it just get that reputation because it's a very niche PS2 launch title?

I just finished and loved King's Field 2 (1 in the west) and Shadow Tower

>> No.7137057

Think of it as a lighter King's Field spinoff.
The gameplay is heavily magic-focused, and the ring system is pretty cryptic and boring (I crafted like 3 rings in the entire game), but otherwise it's still a fun experience.

Oh yeah, I should also say I'm fine with it being more "casual" or easy to beat, especially after Shadow Tower. For the record I also genuinely liked the weapon breaking mechanic in the latter and felt it added a great survival horror element; so god knows, maybe the ring mechanic will grow on me too.

that's right, From had two games for the PS2's launch

+great soundtrack
+cool atmosphere
+a lot of charm
-wonky controls
-ring magic system is fucked and requires gamefaqs or some spreadsheet to understand

if you can remap the controls or simply get used to them, this game is still a fun playthrough if you don't mind a challenge

>>7137096
That one looks like a far more straightforward and accessible game, though. I get why the general public would go "what the fuck" at this being one of the first PS2 RPGs back in the day, especially since it still had PS1 controls, but these days it just looks like another fun game if you're into From's 1st person dungeon crawlers.

I legitimately can’t get into the early fromsoft games. I don’t know if it’s just my zoomerism or what, but the early kings field games feel incredibly slow and empty, and shadow tower although a step up in my mind due to the better atmosphere and spookiness, is still plagued with horrid controls and hit boxes.
Wish I could enjoy them because I see the merit in some of them, but don’t enjoy it much. Loved shadow tower abyss but it’s a newer and less dated game, easier too.

Have you tried since playing Abyss? Great game, btw. The disc for it is so cool - the PS banner is white.

Wrong. They had 3, you fucking stupid retard.
Evergrace, Eternal Ring, and Armored Core 2.

>Have you tried since playing Abyss?
No actually, and I think it might help since although Abyss is faster paced, it's still a much slower paced game than others. I've gotten used to the methodical dungeon crawling aspect. So maybe I'll try King's Field 4 and backtrack from there if I enjoy it, not sure.
Haven't tried Eternal Ring either so although some have a negative opinion of it, I might as well give it a shot. Maybe it'll click for me like Abyss did.

the only fromsoftware games that existed were armored core

Tried playing Armored Core 1. Loved the idea and the quick menus eliminating walking to shops or an empty town wondering. The controls were atrocious and irredeemable. Made the game unplayable. A damn shame

despite being action games the tone is kind of bleak and helpless instead of being some chad af spellsword who surmounts all obstacles and becomes an immortal king with premium elf pussy

there's also something inherently satisfying about solving puzzles and dominating dungeons where you sort of become superior instead of becoming the action master of timings and patterns which is sort of like lifting weights, a thing you quickly become bad at if you don't practice and loses it's glow as soon as you've conquered it

You can remap them on an emulator and use modern controls. The games are great if you change the controls or get used to the admittedly shitty default controls.

It's really not the game's fault you have such a low IQ and no ability to adapt or learn things proficiently.

>I tried really hard to like the game
Doesn't really sound like it, how much different layouts did you try? None of the controls are going to be perfect due to the game being before analog sticks, but once you get used to the controls it's pretty simple. If you switch to more modern controls it should be even easier.
The only thing I can understand being so frustrated with you quit is the "platforming" parts of the game which are very poor due to the camera controls. Those were annoying for me. I think the controls are generally pretty bad, just a product of their era, but it didn't get me to stop playing since again, you get used to it and it becomes second nature. How far into the game did you get?

>> No.7143374

I pretty much got far enough to have enough cash to buy most parts. The camera controls were just unbearable and too frustrating. Don't want to put in the effort or time to get proficient and the shit controls

you get an FCS for a reason anon, you're probably trying to hard instead of upgrading your autoaim

the game isn't really designed to be playable without taking a certain amount of damage either

>> No.7143886

>>7143374
What part of the controls are you having problem with? Mostly the camera controls? If you remap the square/triangle/etc to camera, it may be easier for you. It isn't much different from any modern control scheme.
Of course if you still have problems with later AC games like AC2 and onward, I wouldn't know how to help.

Not surprised, seems like Fromsoft was pretty late when it comes to implementing double analog sticks to their PS2 games. I think the only fantasy RPG type game that had it was Shadow Tower Abyss, could be wrong though. Don't think Eternal Ring or King's Field 4 had it.

>> No.7145176

No one mentioned the Rune/Lost Kingdoms games, which are very polished and have joystick camera control.

>> No.7146328

Played armored core 1 for the the first time last year and the controls were fine. its now my go to ps1 'action' game. feels fun to ride around and blow shit up. In fact I prefer the ps1 armored core to the ps2 games. ps1 feels faster and more atmospheric.
>>7143374
If you have trouble with the controls and don't know what to do at any given point, try holding R1 or L1 a lot and get a handle on strafing, you can strafe out most enemies and it won't totally fuck up your perspective. Then you can start adding boost hops. Once you get it down you'll start to feel like a true raven.

>> No.7148025

The balance is poor. I remember reading/hearing that a player got through most of the game with just the basic fireball ring. The spells are too overpowered and there's no weight to the combat because of it, where you aren't using rings that support you that often and are instead just nuking everything.

>> No.7148030

>>7137096
IIRC they worked with early PS2 devkits or an actual PS1 to make Evergrace so they were early-af.

Off topic but Armored Core 2, as the other poster inpolitely says, was the third game they had for the PS2's launch and arguably the best. Even if it feels like a rushed game in that series, and has broken things like the boosters all being similar due to a programming oversight, it expands the lore of the first three games for a good conclusion. Just don't go for the multiplayer or the arena in that one, its pretty much just a single-player game due to the fact that there are 4 other games in the series that do the gameplay much better; treat it just as a side-story of the first three games and you'll be fine.

It may work but that doesn't mean it can't be better. Shadow Tower Abyss for example had pretty great controls that made the gameplay very fluid and allowed for a lot more mechanically to be implemented.
