Rise of the Triad: Dark War is a first-person shooter developed and published by Apogee Software in 1994 for DOS. It was initially designed to be the follow-up to Wolfenstein 3D, and it used an enhanced variant of the Wolfenstein 3D engine.

Can someone steeped in Doom culture give me the skinny on why Zandronum hasn't been updated in eons? I have such fond memories of playing in 10 years ago, and I'll hop on now and again; right now quite a few servers are populated, but I'd hate to see such a star wane so meekly. Is there some sort of internal battle where one person is hoarding all the important code?

Asking again to get more opinions:

Doomguy VS BJ Blazkowicz VS Corvus (Heretic) VS Duke Nukem VS Caleb VS Lo Wang VS Ranger VS The Hero (Powerslave/Exhumed) VS Tarantino Cassatt (Rise of the Triad) VS The Cyborg (Marathon)

Deathmatch

Who comes out on top?

My head canon simulations have Caleb win 7 out of 10 matches, with Doomguy getting 2 and The Hero from Powerslave getting 1.

i mean the problem is DRLA is for a build of ZDoom further along than Zandronum
Zandronum is literally missing features that DRLA and countless other mods requires to run, and that's a damn shame because if Zandronum caught up to current ZDoom the massive flux of new mods playable online would finally breathe new life into the stagnant servers

Depends on a lot of factors, but the RotT characters get a lot of the most ridiculous overpowered weapons so he'd have to do pretty well I imagine. Though Duke's shrink ray and Doomguy's BFG have elements that make them difficult to counter. I'm in the Marathrong but I don't think the Security Officer would necessarily do that well since he lacks hitscan weapons. His main advantage is what >>7128607 was semi-hinting at, which is that he's Durandal's slave for both better and worse, and theoretically Durandal might teleport in extra ammo and health specially for him. Well, that and he's also immune to fall damage which could be a big plus in certain maps.

BJ ends up on the bottom for his slow speed imo and I think Corvus is nearly a straight downgrade of Doomguy, so he would probably end up near the bottom as well. Curious why a few people see The Hero doing so well, I don't see what makes him any more powerful than any of the other Build guys.

Is not liking Half-Life (unknown reason) and Doom "because it has death metal music" despite not playing either reason enough to terminate friendship with the faggot?
I'm pretty sure it is, I haven't met anyone who wasn't like, a boomer or little girl who says they don't like Doom, and Half-Life is arguably the best non-doom shooter ever made. Changed how every FPS's story mode since.

Fuck, I can't even think of a bad Doom game at all and the only bad Half-Life one is a shitty bug-ridden fan game that's more like a G-mod map set.

I can tell your "friend" has no idea what death metal actually is, if they think any of the doom games have it.
The heaviest genre classic doom copied is thrash metal, and depending on who you ask, either only barely qualifies as an extreme genre, or doesn't qualify at all.
And modern Doom, is basically just industrial djent, which might not even qualify as metal at all for some.

Damn, that sounds way better than I expected. I use digital music packs as often as I can as they invariably sound better than MIDI players. Only somewhat-related but a good soundfont for Jimmy MIDIs is RLNDGM soundfont because Jimmy uses the default Microsoft synth for his compositions. Some really high-quality (1+ gb) soundfonts to experiment with are Mysung Kite and Orpheus but the instrument balance will be different since playing MIDIs with different soundfonts is akin to using gameplay mods and the music will sound different so it's up to you to find what you like with what

Sandy, probably. I'd say Romero, but the trans kids thing is fucked up, and I can't abide it.
Otherwise Romero is alright, but it goes

McGee is cool and all, but outside of the aesthetic I didn't care for Alice's gameplay so much. The sequels might be better.
Sandy is just level headed as hell, and I legit like his maps. After playing Doom 1, it's refreshing to see the experimental stuff. Even if it doesn't hold up to "time" as well, whatever the fuck that means, they're more interesting in general that a lot of the other maps in Doom 2.

Just finished Redneck Rampage. The early sewer level almost single-handedly killed the entire experience for me as I was stuck for HOURS upon HOURS trying to find the way out until I caved in and resorted to a walkthrough. This level is just designed by a complete twat who expects far too much from the player. I think there was a similar puzzle near the end where I was completely stumped and I have no idea how they expect players to even be in the mindset for stuff like this. At times the game relied entirely on the player completing infuriating jumping puzzles, solving switch puzzles from hell or going through mazes.

Every Build game programmer makes his own "core system for the game, everything not handled by the engine", it's how most Build games ended up being so different, Build just provides the setup and the tool for that to happen.

btw who's to thank/blame for details of the doom bestiary? E.g., like the exact details of the arch vile? I think the doom 2 bestiary are the key reason behind doom's longevity. I mean nuances like how the arch vile instantly retaliates against whoever last hit it, and the line of sight mechanic. these nuances make encounters endlessly fresh. i don't know any other fps where the encounters constantly shock me.

Yes. Woof is MBF - read the OP in the Woof thread. Woof is basically Chocolate/Crispy Doom but for Boom/MBF maps; Chocolate in the sense that it's limited to 4:3 aspect ratio, and Crispy in the sense that it has both the original Doom 320x200 resolution and "high" 640x400 resolution (features that were originally MBF but whatever). For example, here is Eviternity map26 with high resolution and integer scaling on (a hidden option in the .cfg file)

I don't think you should, as Woof lacks the many extra options that makes Crispy so bad ass, like bright maps, widescreen 640x400, etc. But that's not the point - Crispy Doom can only play vanilla and limit-removing wads, so you don't have the choice to use it for Boom and MBF wads.
> why should i play WOOF over Eternity/PrBoom
Eternity, similar to GZDoom and PrBoom and other modern source ports, cannot render 320x200 and 640x400 resolutions properly, most noticeable in the statusbar numbers and Doomguy's face. So if you want the Crispy Doom experience in Boom/MBF, you use Woof.

You actually can now. Eternity in recent builds now has a render resolution seperate from regular screen resolution. If you have regular resolution a 4:3 one (like 1280x960), and set render resolution to 320x200 or 640x400, it'll work correctly.

Mine doesn't have those options. I'm on 4.01. Are you using a dev build?

>>7130247
Kind of like how MBF is the successor to Boom, Eternity is the successor to MBF in that it adds advanced options like ZDoom but can still playback original demos unlike ZDoom. So, for example, similar to GZDoom, Eternity can display the custom episode selections and unique end-of-episode intermission screens of Eviternity and Valiant, unlike PrBoom; and Eternity can also playback the start-up demos that come with those megawads, unlike GZDoom. Like another anon mentioned, it also supports portals to create actual room-over-room geometry. For some reason my post got deleted; I previously posted a map set that uses portals extensively:

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/111787-cubic-worlds-wip-a-mapset-for-eternity-with-original-music-6-maps-done/?tab=comments#comment-2076049

Quick rundown:
Pros:
+ has MAPINFO, similar to GZDoom. More recently, UMAPINFO has come out and GZDoom supports that as well as PrBoom+ 2.5.1.7 and DSDA-Doom
+ can play virtually all Doom demos, similar to PrBoom+ and unlike GZDoom which cannot play the start-up demos that come with Doom maps
+ allows portals and other powerful modding tech like defining what level exit takes you to which map IIRC

Cons:
- lacks OpenGL, unlike PrBoom and GZDoom
- doesn't have the complevel parameter to make demo recording and playback a breeze
- lacks Crispy Doom's options, but so does everything else
- can't into 320x240 or 640x480 resolutions the way purist ports like DOS/Choco/Crispy/Woof can

Basically nothing wrong with it, just no reason to use it outside of maps designed for Eternity, but if it got OpenGL, Crispy Doom options, fixed the low-resolution video modes for purists, and had -complevels, then there'd be no reason to use anything else except for GZDoom unless for purist reasons like Chocolate

When you download a new map, organize it based on its compatibility, so that you always know what goes with what. Vanilla and limit-removing have zero difference in complevel, but I separate them anyway so I know what I can run in DOSBox/Chocolate, pic related. If I download any demos from DSDA I put it inside the wad's folder. If you need to go back and check, just do an internet search for "doom valiant" for example and click the article in the doomwiki and it will tell you its compatibility, because there are some instances where the .txt file that comes with a wad will not specificy if it's Boom or limit-removing or what

If you think about it, making a level for a game like Doom is a lot like planning out a dungeon crawl for a pen & paper game like Dungeons & Dragons, and the other guys probably came to realize this, because they played that a lot.

Playing through lilith.pk3 right now, it's not really that spooky. Maybe a bit off putting but it's not scary at all.

Why did Graf have such a meltdown over it anyway? From my understanding it uses corruptions of the software rendering to achieve some of it's effects and since GZDoom doesn't support proper software rendering it obviously wouldn't work.

I am not that anon, but he is right. The Abyss is a huge, beautifully crafted, atmospheric adventure with the most badass bosses ever. Hotel Hell in comparison is a mess, the progression is weird with seemingly irrelevant combats and areas, tge city looks poorly designed and way too bright, and there are no hotel feel in the map, there are no rooms for example. LA Rumble and Flood Zone are much better episode 3 maps in comparison.

Do Preacher.wad next. Another short one, nine maps. My personal favorite, as the combat is chaotic with the ammo being spread thinly across the map so you have to keep moving, alerting more monsters, or you run out of ammo. I recommend GLBoom, with Sector Light Mode GLBoom, and gamma level 2 or 3 (toggle in-game with F11), mainly because there is a switch you need on map06 that is really dark with other settings, and more importantly because the maps look great in OpenGL. I'm not sure what a good light mode would be for GZDoom, maybe default is fine, but I recommend at least watching the start-up demos in GLBoom before playing in GZDoom

There was a particular level where you had to get through the whole casino to the boss office and than he ran away. vkQuake is pretty great. Why didn't I start using it earlier? It's Quakespasm, but with support for MSAA/SSAA, AF, GUI setting for gl_texturemode (but not r_particles, for some reason), vanilla-style underwater effect (instead of a lot less noticeable GLQuake effect). I'm not sure why it had to be forked and ported to Vulkan to implement any of this though.

Now my "modern vanilla" Quake setup consists of:
vkquake -fitz (restores demo playback in the menu/classic HUD/etc)
+gl_zfix 1 (fix for base Q1 and Dimension of the Past, not needed for expansion packs)
+r_particles 2 (square particles)
Filter: classic (unfiltered pixels)
Underwater FX: classic
4x MSAA
16x AF

Also, it crashed my GPU driver when I pressed Alt+Tab. Vulkan is great, guys, it just works!

I think it's great that Doom gives you a billion ways to play and get good before cruising on their preferred difficulty.
I can maybe understand getting frustrated with having to cater to multiple difficulties when designing a map, but if it gets to you just don't do it; you're only hurting yourself there.

Valiant is the funnest 32-level-megawad I've played so far. The levels are generally short Scythe-like levels that are a good challenge and balanced around pistol-starts, but the level design really shines IMO when doing single-segment runs of entire short episodes because the design flows so well and encourages aggressive kill-crazy rampages by giving you lots of ammo, lots of health, lots of enemies, and secrets to help the 100%'er. Also the pyroknight is the funnest enemy to fight that I've come across

No, he's right, though you are too. Side strafing is slower than normal strafing, but sqrt(x^2 + ((x-y)^2) is still always faster than sqrt(x^2) as long as y =/= 0 so straferunning is still advantageous. It definitely makes a big difference in some of Marathon's jump puzzles, e.g. Strange Aeons.

When the thread hits bump limit its the same guy every single time making shitposts. My theory is its a guy bored with retro shooters but hes too addicted to 4chan to leave the thread and find something new so he needs something to entertain him. He doesn't want every thread to be full of shit because this thread is his "home", so he spergs out when it gets close to bump limit.
