Is ActRaiser 2 better and a true sequel than the first Actraiser? Should I buy it?

>> No.7125942

>>OP

Actraiser 2 doesn't have the city raising simulation that the first one had, it's only the platforming.

The game is also commonly said to be way harder than the 1st one though you're millage may vary, if you find it for cheap then it wouldn't be the worst idea to try it, otherwise you're probably better off with the first game, least in my opinion.

Before giving my opinions, I did not beat this one because I thought it just didn't play well at all.

Its definitely worse and at least on emulator plays worse. I don't know about if you played on actual hardware with the cartridge but I'm pretty sure its got framerate drops like crazy regardless. The games controls are also not nearly as good. Basically the 1st game is better across the board.

At least the game looks good. If only the new ideas for the character were put together better with tighter more responsive controls and maybe more freedom with the glide, or perhaps even some limited flight would have been nice. Music is great though.

>> No.7126184

ActRaiser 2 is hard because your character sucks dick, he swings his sword in a puny little streak that barely hits a foot straight in front of him instead of a triumphant full-extended arc. Some hazards are only avoidable by gliding which controls like powersliding molasses and will 9 times out of 10 careen you straight into some other obstacle if you don't jerk back and forth like a retard. The game's awful.

>Actraiser sequel
There are two sequels.
Actraiser 2 (SNES) is exclusively the action part
Solo Crisis (Saturn) is exclusively the simulation part

The action part was always floaty trash and you can tell Quintet gave up on that.

As for the plot behind Solo Crisis, it's very minimal and gameplay-driven. The world has an overworld and an underworld. Those corrupted by Satan into sin became monsters who speak a different tongue so that God's word (spoken by the overworld denizens) doesn't reach them, so they speak a cryptic language (game has a dictionary that fills over time).

You can command your units like a turn-based SRPG to build houses, barricades, defend, fight, and you have to protect your HQ and destroy the enemy HQ on the underside. You can't see the underside until your units reach a portal there, then warp to the underside and continue marching to the enemy HQ. You will occasionally encounter enemies you can fight and occasionally convert on your side. Not all units can fight (women tend to be care takers for example).
You also have divine interventions to add concave and convex land formations (that WILL affect the underside), rain (will flood holes and drown any units there), lightning, devastating earthquakes.

Some say it's an Actraiser "spritual successor" but honestly it's a sequel in all aspects but name. If there's someone interested who can nihongo, I can implement even a partial menu translation.

>> No.7126389

The enemies are sponges. It feels like it was designed to play on easy because you can actually down thrust enemies while landing on platforms instead of the enemy surviving and damaging you. And it's actually fun on easy.

>Is ActRaiser 2 better

It is better if you like that kind of action game and don't suck at it and you're too competent at games to be challenged by anything in the extremely easy first game. It is worse if you suck at it or you're incapable of letting go of the idea that every ActRaiser game needs to have city-building sections. They are both excellent games but they're good at different things. The first game is far more broadly ambitious and far less conventional, but mechanically, it isn't very deep. The second game has that missing depth but it's too hard for a lot of "people" and it's disappointingly conventional in structure.

>and a true sequel than the first Actraiser?

It is a true sequel, as far as I recall. Not that that means a whole lot.

>Should I buy it?

If what I said above sounds great to you then... yeah, I guess? If you want. Otherwise, you should emulate it. You'll probably be disappointed by it, but maybe you won't.

It's the most disappointing retro sequel I've ever played. Takes out the city sim segments which made the first game interesting, your character moves slow as fuck, the music isn't as good, and the difficulty level is ratcheted up too high. Emulate it if you're curious but do NOT waste your money on it.

Yup, on its own it's a great action game, but the controls and physics take a lot of time to get used to. Definitely the epitome of git gud.

Quintet only made it at Enix of America's behest, and they thought western fans would enjoy a refined, harder action game. I don't think they succeeded not because it wasn't a good game, but rather because it's not really pick up and play.

go to the emulation gametek wiki to a certain famous page, you'll find an archive link to the 2019 redump saturn set. You can open files individually, that revision includes the retail version of solo crisis. (older one only had the demo, that's why no website online has it)

After completing the game once, an extra mode "Professional!" is revealed. This is every Act back-to-back with no Sim Modes. The Master begins with maximum health, but all enemies have double health.

I loved the first one. When I was a kid, I finally got Act Raiser 2 for Christmas Eve at my uncle's house and couldn't fucking wait to get home to play it. My favorite part from the original was the sim portions. Imagine my disappointment when I fired up Act Raiser 2 and discovered there was no sim mode at all. This is before people really used internet or, as a kid, there was any good way to know what the game was like beforehand. Still to this day one of my biggest let downs.

Dude no I love ActRaiser 2 and I find the first game way too simple and easy now, but when I was a kid I had exactly the experience that anon had, except with rental instead of purchase and also there was no uncle. The simulation parts provided most of the game's character and atmosphere. They were mechanically shallow, but a kid doesn't perceive that. I liked the action parts but the city parts are the heart of the game and those were my favorite.

2 is actually a competent action platformer. 1 is two half baked parts coming together. 2 gets shit on because the majority of people who play it get filtered. They refuse to get to know the moveset, its strength and weaknesses.
