7123458 No.7123458 [Reply] [Original]

Thread title. Let us come together to talk about Sega's weird, misunderstood, tremendously charming 32 bit console.

> What are you playing?
> Have you done any hardware mods?
> Are you a collector who buys retail games, or do you prefer a mod chip for backups/an ODE?
> Did you get one back in the 90s, or did you discover the system more recently?

I never had a Saturn when I was a kid, because I was a poorfag who had a Genesis well into the 32 bit era. I picked one up around 2008 or so and bought one of those old Rackeyboy modchips and had a blast, but had to sell my physical game collections when I moved to another state. I just recently picked up a white Japanese model 2 on Ebay. I had a pseudosaturn cart for a while but a couple weeks ago my MODE arrived, so I have been using that instead.

Anyway, it's late and I'm bored so I figured I'd make a thread (inb4 some faggy bernieposter)

To expand on this, I am currently replaying the first Tomb Raider. I downloaded the Japanese release because I heard that the framerate was a little better, but so far it seems the same as the NA version. The Japanese dub in the cutscenes is interesting though.

I just started the Sanctuary of the Scion level. I think the game plays a lot better with the Saturn pad than it does with the PS1 controller. I think that the Saturn version has a better average framerate than the PS1, but definitely dips lower during some areas (especially places like the Cistern when you increase the water level). I think a lot of this has to do with the increased draw distance on the Saturn version though.

I'm currently waiting for the 4MB RAM cartridge I ordered to arrive so I can try out the new Vandal Hearts translation.

Saturn modernization project. I'm too attached to the Saturn I had as a kid to cannibalize it and throw in an ODE so I bought a broken Saturn and will kit it out with an ODE (Fenrir) as well as getting a SCART cable and an OSSC (which will also be used with a future Dreamcast project in the same vein) and topped off with a wireless controller and a Pseudo Saturn cart from AliExpress (which will hopefully get here).

Saturn collecting just isn't worth the cost when I only want to play some games.

I paid $99.99 shipped from Japan for pic related a couple of months ago.

There seem to be a lot of "JPN console, controller, couple of random games, sometimes a memory cart" bundles for $100-$120 on Ebay. Amusingly enough the cost of a weeb console is significantly less than the cost of a US one. Your best bet is to pick up an ODE, but if you're not interested in spending hundreds on a MODE or waiting for a cheaper model 2 solution that doesn't involve camping some dude's wordpress blog waiting for sales to open up than something like this, a $40 pseudosaturn cartridge, and a stack of CDRs is all you'll need.

As for the plot behind Solo Crisis, it's very minimal and gameplay-driven. The world has an overworld and an underworld. Those corrupted by Satan into sin became monsters who speak a different tongue so that God's word (spoken by the overworld denizens) doesn't reach them, so they speak a cryptic language (game has a dictionary that fills over time).

You can command your units like a turn-based SRPG to build houses, barricades, defend, fight, and you have to protect your HQ and destroy the enemy HQ on the underside. You can't see the underside until your units reach a portal there, then warp to the underside and continue marching to the enemy HQ. You will occasionally encounter enemies you can fight and occasionally convert on your side. Not all units can fight (women tend to be care takers for example).
You also have divine interventions to add concave and convex land formations (that WILL affect the underside), rain (will flood holes and drown any units there), lightning, devastating earthquakes.

Some say it's an Actraiser "spritual successor" but honestly it's a sequel in all aspects but name. If there's someone interested who can nihongo, I can implement even a partial menu translation.

I bought pic related a few months ago, mostly because I like Um Jammer Lammy on Playstation. It's an obvious cash-in on Parappa's success, and it's quite poorly made, but I've recently grown really fond of it. It's very charming in a way, and some of the songs are actually quite good. I suggest you just get a real Saturn. I got a model 1 Saturn for like 2500 yen. The red cartridge that includes PseudoSaturn, RAM expansion and memory card is like 50$. If you live in a country that uses the 200-volt span like me, you'll have to either replace the power supply or get a step-down converter. That was the most expensive part for me, but recently cheap PicoPSU alternatives have shown up on AliExpress, the one I got is the one made by DragonCity in France which was like double the price.
If you live in the US you don't need to replace the PSU, even though Japanese Saturns say only 100v on the back, the actual internal PSU is the same as the ones in US Saturns, they even say 100-120v on the circuit board. I would still recommend that you do replace it with a modern one eventually though, the originals are getting old and the capacitors might start blowing soon.

Does anyone know a place to get replacement labels for Saturn save cartridges?

I know a bunch of games came with them, and an "index" one with lines (so you could write down what saves were on the cart) was usually included in the standalone units, but I have a white first party cart with no label and it looks kinda weird in my Saturn.

Depends on what you're into. If you're into 2D fighting games (especially Capcom ones) the Saturn is GOAT, it has arcade perfect ports of the best fighting games of the 90s. There are some solid 3D fighters as well.
If you're into 2D shooters it's the same story. Some of the best shoot 'em ups ever released are on this system.
If you're into JRPGs there are some awesome games on the system as well. It didn't get any of the Squaresoft stuff, but it made up for it with other releases. There are some excellent strategy games on the system as well.
It also had tons of excellent arcade ports, a surprising amount of ports of classic PC FPS games, and even a few arcade racers.

tl;dr - it's an incredible system if you were looking for certain genres, or wanted to see some more unusual games (especially if you're into weebshit). While it had its share of "serious" games, it was the last home console that still had a predominantly arcade focus, before gaming became "cinematic".

Where is the best place to get a list of Japanese exclusive import games that are playable in English?

I'm not talking about "import the Japanese version of a 2D fighting game because it's half the price of the North American one", or "This Japanese RPG is totally playable, you just have to print out a 400 page translation guide and refer to it constantly while playing", I mean "Japanese games that were only released in Japan that are 100% playable because they're either an arcade game where just the menus are in Japanese, or the game itself has an option for English".

I found a different game rip on internet archive that's working like a champ. So if anyone else wants to play, be warned that there are issues with the emuparadise rips of disc 2 and 3

>What are you playing?
i leave vampire savior in and usually just play that for a few minutes when i want to use my saturn.
>Have you done any hardware mods?
no, i just use an action replay flashed with pseudosaturn for backups.
>Are you a collector who buys retail games, or do you prefer a mod chip for backups/an ODE?
i've thought of getting a modchip so i could use the cartridge slot for the netlink modem and pirate its games, but that and the other hardware would be a significant investment for a handful of games that are convoluted to play online and have a small community.
>Did you get one back in the 90s, or did you discover the system more recently?
just got one this year with stimulus bucks because i heard emulation was so-so.

Aren't these generic 9v PSUs with barrel connectors just like on the Famicom and Super Famicom? Just get a new one with the same voltage from AliExpress. These old ones are clunkier, less efficient which both leads to higher energy use and creates heat, and the capacitors might start dying soon since they're so old which can lead to AC power going straight into the console.

> Sega Rally
I really like this game, it's got the perfect arcade feel and it's the first console driving game that had different physics for different road surfaces

> Clockwork Knight
A really fun 2D sidescroller where you play as a toy knight, basically Japanese knockoff Toy Story

> In the Hunt
Literally Metal Slug but underwater in a submarine

> Shining Force 3
One of the best SRPGs of all time, and although only the first game in the SF3 trilogy was released in English there is a fan translation so they're all playable

> Virtua Fighter 2
There are a few 3D fighters on the Saturn, but for some reason VF2 just clicked with me. I get into a zen mode when I'm playing. It also looks really nice since it runs in the Saturn's high resolution mode

for multiplats,

> Tomb Raider
I think it plays a lot better with the Saturn controller than with the PS1's controller (especially since the Saturn's d-pad isn't dogshit like the Playstation one). 3D platforming/puzzle solving/action, but in some really incredible looking environments and with this great sense of isolation that no other game has matched

> Resident Evil
Has a Saturn exclusive battle mode

> Dead or Alive
Looks nicer on the Saturn, and plays better on the Saturn controller

> Duke Nukem 3D
Runs way better on the Saturn (although the PS1 version does has an exclusive extra chapter with maps based on PS1 games)

> Independence Day
Based on the movie, it's a flight sim where you have different missions (sometimes you fly around and blow up parts of the big ships to get them to open their main gun so you can destroy it, sometimes you have to defend AWACs planes, etc). Has an interesting "lives" system where you can find icons for planes hidden in the levels, which unlocks that plane to fly in missions, but if you die in a mission you lose whichever plane you were flying

> Megaman 8, X3, and X4
If you like Megaman, than here's Megaman. X3 is a barebones SNES port, but it's still fun.

cont.

> Literally any 2D fighting game
Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, and especially Capcom's stuff (Street Fighter and the various Marvel/X-Men games), they all run significantly better on the Saturn than the PS1. Some require an expansion RAM cartridge though.

> Warcraft II
Console RTS games are usually a total shitshow, but there's something fun about kicking back on your couch and playing Warcraft II on a decent sized TV.

> Blast Chamber
This game is ok in single player, but really needs to be played with a multiplayer adapter and three other friends

> Die Hard Arcade
A 3d beat em up, tons of fun in two player mode with a friend

Hopefully there's something here that interests you.

>Are you a collector who buys retail games, or do you prefer a mod chip for backups/an ODE?
I kept most of my games since the 90s but haven't bought any in a long time. I started using backups with Pseudo Saturn until I got my MODE this year
>Did you get one back in the 90s, or did you discover the system more recently?
Dad bought the Saturn with almost a dozen games secondhand of a friend for $50 back in 1998.

I actually kept the Saturn in storage for over 15 years because all my games were skipping. I bought a Pseudo Saturn in early 2018 and using fresh CD-Rs seemed to help. It was around a 20% chance that the games wouldn't load however. That's why I ended up getting a MODE.
