Colors weren't as loud, for one. It was more about cute girls with cute haircuts in form fitting flannel shirts with dark eye makeup than it was about teasing their hair up and wearing 50 neon bracelets.
It was a special time.

>> No.7121187

Year 2000 was the peak. Diablo 2 and Baldur's Gate 2, among many others (FF9), came out that year. Late 2000s were the lowest point of gaming I've ever seen, when triple A garbage and mobile shovelware completely took over the industry. I got much more into old games at this time because shit was so terrible. We've only just begun to recover in the last few years with a strong independent scene.

Early.
I'd say 90s to early 2000s was the peak as far as actual design goes.
Once AA+ games had to start selling 500k+ (roughly 97~) the mid-tier developers started dying off and everyone started chasing the lowest common denominator for the numbers.
We saw the result of that in the mid to late 2000s and of course shit like social media and post-Java phone games.

That's not to say there's no good shit later on but the middle market clearly took a huge downturn until recently.

With PS2 shovelware you at least get to always use physical buttons (which means that the game's more responsive / controls slightly better), with Wii shovelware you're almost always gonna deal with poorly-implemented motion controls.

The difference between early/mid/late 90s is much bigger than early/mid/late 2000s. In 2009, you could get away with listening to 2000 songs and dressing in 2000 fashion and it wouldn't have seemed that long ago.

You couldn't get away with dressing like 1990 and listening to 1990 music in 1999 without it seeming long ago. Each third of the 90s was like a compressed decade in and of itself, from neon 80s leftover (early 90s) to rustic grunge angst (mid 90s) to Y2K chrome bling (late 90s).

The early 00s are one of the most fascinating periods for console gaming, since it's the era when technology hit the point where technical limitations only mattered if you really wanted to go overboard with physics or graphics. Beyond that, pretty much anything was fair game. And it really showed. They threw fucking everything at the wall just because they could. I would say with the early 2000's it was pretty amazing getting stuff like smash bros and the anticipation of nintendo going with discs and stuff like gran turismo and gta 3 even halo - 4 player splitscreen. I got granturismo 4 with the steering which felt high end and also simpsons road rage, around the time of gran turismo 4 and after vice city then resident evil 4 gaming started to feel pretty stale though, guitar hero got pretty popular for a short time then I no longer cared what the next big game would be.

Second half started pretty nuts. The 360 was launched and was ok but people swore - they SWORE - that "yeah its ok but playstation 2 has been popular and mainstream for so long, no way will the 360 succeed". So it was pretty exciting to see if it would actually knock over sony when Nintendo couldn't. Then it was released, took awhile to get graphics much better than ps2 but eventually there was no disputing.
The wii hype was also nuts, the first year or so had some pretty inovative titles and felt pretty amazing to start. Wasn't long before that waggle was not really used that much. Didn't stop people from proclaming that this is the blue ocean strategy, "games are not for you anymore sweetie". A few good games came out like gta 4 but the second half of the 2000s was pretty uninteresting really apart from a few, I don't think there is really that much nostalgie to want to go back to that period because new games are just the same but better.

Xbox live arcade did make it acceptable to release 2d and more uncommon games back without everyone proclaming them as outdated relics though but that was more early.

But yeah, the late 2000's was just companies trying to copy the wii, I remember at one e3 that mainly had some rapper singing and then it was kinnect then wii music. (I had some fun with kinnect). Evetually everyone realized the wii wasn't going to happen again and then pretended this phaze didn't happen.

7th gen (specifically, the period from 2006-2013) was the worst for mainstream AAA trends.

>every realistic game is suddenly downright monochrome, even if previous games had color (MGS4, Twilight Princess, Fallout 3, Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc.)
I blame Resident Evil 4 and Shadow of the Colossus, both came out at the tail end of Gen 6
>"we want the Call of Duty audience" is in full effect, most games are dumbed down like crazy for babies
>PS3/360 games chase the corridor simulator + "cool" setpiece every five minutes experience, the concept of level design literally doesn't exist anymore (new Thief and Resident Evil games were a joke)
>every game is a first-person or third-person shooter
>Wii installments of long-running series are really dumbed down mechanically (Brawl, Skyward Sword, etc.) to appeal to the Wii Sports crowd
Long running series that had their series go to shit in the 7th gen:
Final Fantasy (XIII)
Resident Evil (6)
The Legend of Zelda (Skyward Sword)
Metroid (Other M)
Devil May Cry (DmC)
Metal Gear Solid (MGS4)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic '06)
Thief (Thi4f)
Animal Crossing (City Folk)
Many trends from gen 7 persisted into early gen 8 games too, you can see 7th gen trends in The Order 1886 and Knack for example. Both absolute garbage.

What saved Gen 7 was handhelds. The DS saw tons of creative and original games, several of the which can be called amongst the greatest games of all time (Ghost Trick, TWEWY, Elite Beat Agents etc), and while many series were going to shit on consoles, long-running franchises' DS installments were great (Pokémon, Castlevania, Megami Tensei etc)

The popularity of Demon's/Dark Souls played a huge role in trends changing. Suddenly every Youtuber critic faggot was on about "good level design", "non-linearity", "enemy utilization", "game feel" etc. and developers started to realize too. There's a reason for the "it's like x meets Dark Souls" meme; every "serious" dev wanted to be compared to DaS.

The 7th gen was at least something new and felt like a change from the 6th gen, unlike the 6th gen which was just the 5th gen with better graphics

Souls games were positive in that it reminded developers that video game players wanted fucking video games, not movies.
