Programming, Sailing
Gundams, Earthworm Jim memorabilia
In between - if it's something I really enjoy I'll go all out otherwise I beat it and move on. I'm very picky about what games I'll try to 100%
Around 200 games from every generation, my largest is in Sega Saturn games. I don't display them.
Nostalgia and some things were more clever than they are now.

Some anime and manga, used to collect Transformers too, cut back on all three.
>Completist/inbetween/casual and why?
Casual, I only buy games I know I'll play. I have no time for trash and space is limited.
>Specific system(s) and why?
Original Gameboy, super charming, portable, games are simple and easy to play and it's cheap. NES and SNES to a lesser extent.
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
Maybe 50 games, all packed and out of the way. If I could get a nice lit glass shelving unit I'd display that shit so fast.
>Why retro videogames?
Super cheap, because of my workplace I'm always around them and they're easy to get into.

I used to collect rocks (including some gemstones) and sports cards when I was a kid and I guess I still have those collections sitting in a tote somewhere in my folk's cellar.
Completionist, I like exploring everything.
I don't actually collect physical copies, I've moved around a lot so I just don't have space for collections.
I like all video games, retro included. These are just the games I grew up playing.

In-between.
>Specific system(s) and why?
I don't understand the question. If you're asking for my favorite system, it's hard to decide. From a console perspective, the Neo Geo AES. From a library perspective, the Saturn, Dreamcast, Turbo Duo, and SNES.
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
No pictures, but for pre-sixth gen I have

Famicom (2 games)
PC Engine (2 games)
SNES (9 games)
Atari Jaguar (6-7 games)
Playstation (10 or so games)
Saturn (20 games?)
Dreamcast (20+ games)
Swan Crystal (4 games)
I also used to own a Neo Geo AES and a Neo Geo CD.
>Why retro videogames?
It's what I grew up with. I still have my prejudices as well (I was a SEGA fanboy, and its still hard to shake my dislike for Nintendo).

It's a very cheap and rewarding hobby, I get a special rush of adrenaline when I see a box of old Nintendo games at a garage sale, and then playing them feels so fulfilling. As far as playing them goes, it's something I can't describe, I just enjoy playing them over most modern games.

I'm loss at this one, I guess inbetween? Completionist and casual both seem extremes, either you're in it just for the sake of collection (not the video games) or ...for the sake of being a hipster (you dont like them either), in between to me implies you get what you like because you enjoy the game and appreciate its value, self description for me.

Specifically counting N64, PS1, GEN, Saturn and SNES, exact. Not counting any system (including DC) released past 1999 -or- PC, obviously.
>Why retro videogames?
This is a tough one without pandering to nostalgia, but I have to say a lot of video games lately, and the collapse of the market (see: Xbox One) plus the quality of discussion around these games (nu-/v/) are borderline mental retardation levels. I yearn for simpler times and more enjoyable experiences, though I do not view every 2010+ game negatively.

Why I do it: Somewhat casually (I've got a NES,SNES,Dreamcast, Genesis, PS2 and PS3) I stick to games that are fun, and I started because of nostalgia. I've got more Genesis games than anything else, and that's because it's one of my favorite systems of all time and I had a NES and SNES giant pile growing up... so I went for nostalgia and other stuff....I just like the look of having old systems. They're fun and give me something to do that's "different" than anyone else. Plus nostalgia and solid games are a plus, it's like a treasure hunt and it's almost as fun to collect and talking about it as it is to play the games. You don't just drive to gamestop or whatever... you also learn a lot and get to repair systems, for me that's fun to take something that was broken and revive it !

PC (+Emulation), still got my classic XBOX (The Real XBOX One, not the "XBOX720 Replacement "One"") and PS2. Didn't buy into (nor could afford) the next-next-gen Modern Warfare craze (although my PC kept up enough with other titles like Borderlands, Fallout3/New Vegas, and such. Thanks Steam!).
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
Check my account if you can find it, or one of my hard drives. At least one of my PSP memcards has the entire collection of NES and SMS games on it (all around, they are that small (<500MB total per-system))
>Why retro videogames?
I grew up with them. I was a Sonic fan, and evolved towards SNES, and PS1, while playing Dos classics, WIN95, and then some. Also grew up deathmatching, from Doom and Bomberman, to Unreal Tournament. Even enjoyed playing some 4X games like Master of Orion and Civilization, and although I wasn't a C&C person, the closest I got to that enjoyment was Dune II: Building of a Dynasty. Thanks Shai'Hulud for eating up all my gorram harvesters.

I don't even send the ones for my region, I hired some guy from the Caribbeans through the company to mail them out. I grew up gaming hard and I never really stopped. Many of my consoles are the ones I had as a kid and have begun to look back at older games and appreciate the ability to pick and choose out of the gold rather than survive the constant wave of spectacle games that come out every year. That said I still enjoy modern gaming in some genres and some rare games.

I like games that reward intuition rather than and the satisfaction of having to master a game to complete it; and being able to come back to a game that once kicked your ass and complete it in one setting. They're just mostly better than modern videogames. Not from a nostalgia perspective, either. Hell, I didn't even play Castlevania SOTN until a few months back, it was easily one of the best games I've played in the last year (and I do keep up with modern gaming). >Collect anything else?

>Completist/inbetween/casual and why?
none of the above. I base the decision to buy a game or not on weather it has any replay value. and I'm not talking MP either, I mean alternate modes, unlockables, multiple characters and endings, ect. I don't always do everything there is to do in a game, but I'm not really casual, because I prefer harder games with a steeper learning curve. So I guess "in between" sort of fits, but that's horseshit, so fuck it.
>Specific system(s) and why?
NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, PS1, PS2, PS3, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Xbox, GB/C/A, DS, NGPC, Virtualboy
I own them because I want them. I play games for all of them because I fucking want to, there is no "why".
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
300 or so games, on a bookshelf near the leather chair in my living room. I also have several game and console boxes on display.
>Why retro videogames?
newer games lack the qualities I look for in games for the most part. Aside from effectively being expensive marketing tools at this point, they also lack overall in the single player experience and are generally designed to be beaten once, then left on the shelf forever. This displeases me to no end. Also, most newer games are designed to be "fun", but forget to be satisfying in a deeper way, enthralling, have any kind of atmosphere and they all generally have boring level designs. Also, many genres are now dead, and I like variety.

Take what you will from that, you filthy, viral marketing scumbag.

Never have had one.

Working out, golf, basketball, LoL.

Comic books, arcade cabinets.

Most certainly a completionist, even if I dislike the game, I will finish it for the sake of being able to say I did so. This way I can at least give criticism without seeming like a jackass.

Super Famicom because I treasure the shit out of my Dragon Quest 1-4 carts, then probably PSX.

Probably about 150 games total for "retro games" Not sure about everything modern. Several hundred comic books with my favorites being framed and put on the wall, Arcade machine wise, I currently only have SSFII: Turbo, NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, House of the Dead, Golden Tee Golf 2k5, Golden Axe, Gauntlet Legends and X-men.

I just really enjoy how much work was put into older games, a lot of these were pioneers in their genres and it's just great to see where things started off at.

I play both retro and new video games, I just enjoy talking about retro video games more. Playing them, exploring the many wonders of older games, and collecting them. Buying a box full of old games and playing each of them is a much better use of $60 than buying a current gen video game.

Got a lot of hardware for the C64, big collection of joysticks, and maybe 150 original games. Though C64 was never really about owning original games.
For NES and Sega I just have few but good games.
>Why retro videogames?
Some nostalgia, but the simple yet good gameplay is something I think is a little lost today. Games tend to drown in achievements, online multiplayer, graphics over gameplay and unnecessary features. I also feel that most games are a bit too easy today. When was the last time you even saw a Game Over screen?

About 30-40 nes games, 20-30 snes games, 10 n64 games, 40-50 PlayStation games, along with an original nes i played in diapers, snes i got close to launch, vanilla black n64, and a working ps2 fat.
>Why retro videogames?
Because ive been playing them my entire life. I enjoy games from all generations, some more than others. Every era of gaming had something to offer. Retro games are often the most challenging games i play, and i often end up buying games i borrowed or rented when i was younger to try and beat them. driver.

my other interest is studying history.

I don't really collect anything else.

Inbetween casual and completionist. I usually only buy what I'll play but I have a huge a pretty big collection of Sega CD shovelware too.

Currently collecting Genesis/SCD stuff because I never played it back in the 90s.

Proabably in between 200-300 total games, many of which are just loose CDs for PC games though, about 60% retro, and very few displayed. Most of my games are stored in boxes or in a closet.

I enjoy playing retro games. Most modern games bore me with their terrible in your face story and casual gameplay. I think strategy games have gotten better with time, though. I don't miss the days before EU 3 or Total War.

This board has given me ideas of games to check out, and I picked up quite a few great titles I had never heard of. I hadn't browsed 4chan in years before this board went up. Probably not since 2008 or so.

>Collect anything else?
Nah, and I don't really collect, I just buy/emulate/pirate whatever strikes my fancy, I just happen to lean more heavily of gaming I love, the type of games that I grew up with.
>Completist/inbetween/casual and why?
Inbetween, I can get rather OCD about my gaming but then I loose interest for large spells at a time. I'm also just interested in gaming in general, I read about and follow up on it a lot to the point of almost calling myself an armchair game historian.
>Specific system(s) and why?
I tend to love games over systems. If the game's good I don't care what it's running on. That said, the system that shan't be named here Dreamcast has a special place in my heart. I just love its design, the fact that it was a true (and the last) system to be seriously connected to the arcades, and the fact that its library has arguably more quality over quantity of any system before or since.
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
I have no idea. I'm not gaming for the bragging rights so I don't display anything, but a realistic estimate would be at least 500 physical games on multiple systems (at least 700 if we include my Steam profile).
>Why retro videogames?
Because they're the games I grew up with, many of which I wanted to play back then but couldn't due to various reasons. Also because gaming was different back then. The things that fascinated and entertained me back then aren't usually being built upon today, so I have to seek the kind of experiences I like in the old rather than new. That said, modern gaming isn't all bad. It's just that a lot of it doesn't target us "gamers" anymore and that which does tends to jump on trends that don't necessarily make for better (or even good) game design.

French teacher abroad well right now I'm only doing a 2 month internship but I finish my studies next year anyway

Music, cinema, comics (french, american and japanese)

I collect video games, comics, CDs (over 400 of those)

Completist most of the time, though now I have thousands of games I clearly don't have time to do 100% runs on everything.

SNES and Megadrive - the most nostalgia filled systems for me

My collection is >>713118 >>707976 >>708152 >>708181 >>708426 and pic related, though it misses quite some games since all those pictures are outdated

Considering my modern video games collection, I just realize that older games have some kind of an aura that makes them great looking and fun to play, opposed to grey and bloomy "so serious stories" new games.

The rage of failing 1000 times over and the glorious triumph of finally getting through something that has kicked my ass every time I've picked it up for 20+ years.

NES, SNES, N64, PSX, adding Genesis soon. Maybe Saturn and Dreamcast someday. Gamecube and PS2 will be retro soon, holding onto those.

Decent size, displayed but could use cleaning up. I'm casing in UGCs bit by bit.
>Why retro videogames?
I grew up with them. I was born the year the NES came out in America and I've been a gamer my whole life. Many moments in my life are tied to specific games. I collect for others for that reason too. I want to preserve the feel of putting a game into the system, turning it on, watching the screen light up, holding the controller in your hand. I've had people look at my collections and watched their face light up as they remembered a specific game from their own life, from some time long ago. I collect for the memories.

Film - DVD/Blu-Ray. I used to pirate, but then I got a job that pays over $50,000/year and decided to stop being a leech.
>Completist/inbetween/casual and why?
Inbetween - I prefer to collect only "good" or unique video games. Completionism is a waste of money and space, and I would be crazy to consider myself Casual. When it comes to film, I collect most of the good, but also a lot of the very worst. Nothing "inbetween" about either collection, though.
>Specific system(s) and why?
NES, SNES, PS1, PS2 - I own a lot of systems and games, but these are systems and respective games I keep going back to, and still love to play on to this day.
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
Over my entire lifetime, and for video games alone? Approx. $25,000 dollars in video games, consoles, and accessories. Probably a little more than that, in fact.
>Why retro videogames?
They simply do not make games today like they used to. Retro games were about challenge and most of the developers who made them strived to make their titles more interesting or unique than everyone else's game on the market. These days, every other game is an FPS or trying to become one - and I didn't used to need 24/7 internet to enjoy video gaming.

Honestly, from my experience, most women don't care about the actual video games stacks and shelves. Most just assume they are CDs and DVDs, and the rest is usually just a question or two that one can brush off and move on to the ugly bumpin'.

It's the other shit most of these fags do - like collecting and displaying action figures, geeky statues, and weaboo and borderline pedo shit all over the place...that tends to be pussy deflection.

It's been thinned out through the years, but I'd guess 300+. Haven't really counted. I have a LOT of systems (extras, etc) and any variation of them. A few import systems and games also.

I grew up when SNES and Genesis were big and just loved everything about that era of games. Ended up working at a small used game shop for 4-5 years and I realized that the most interesting titles were older ones. We had some really awesome gems come through a few times. Ended up collecting what I could since the manager would give me a great discount on most of them.

The difference between what is obviously a hobby collection and a fucking pile of manchild creepiness is PRESENTATION. Just like the difference between a respectable man and a creepy manchild is mostly dressing, grooming, and bearing.

>Specific system(s) and why?
Are we talking retro only? If so, I'm an NES and Genesis fan. NES for obvious reasons. I also think the Genesis just had the software edge over the SNES. SNES had probably 3 or 4 of the 5 best games between the systems, but Genesis just had so much good stuff in general.

It's between 600 and 700. It's spread around various places at the moment because I'm in college. Whenever I've got my own place, I'll dedicate some solid shelf space to it.

About 50 snes games, 35 genesis, 25 n64 games.
Because there are many good games that i didn't play when i was a kid, so it's kind of cool to rediscover all those games, and because i feel the vidya industry was less standarized than today, there was space for variation (and subsequently failures of course)

What's your point? I got an NES when I was 10, ie 2003. That put it at 18 years old, which easily exceeds /vr/'s current retro threshold of 12 or 13 years back or whatever. I bought the system because I saw it at a local used game shop and wanted to know what the NES I read about online was all about. I knew I loved Nintendo, why wouldn't I love its systems of the past?

What's more, yes, I was born in the life cycle of the Genesis/SNES, but the first console I ever got was N64 when I was 5 or 6. By the time either the NES, SNES, or Genesis were entering my realm of interests, all three were pushing their teens.

In between, I guess. I only target games that are:
a) Major, well regarded releases
b) Rare and valuable titles.

The main two systems I collect for are Saturn and Jaguar. Saturn because it has great games, many of which were released in limited quantities, and procuring those hard to find games is a huge rush. Jaguar because it's just so bad that it's good. Plus it's still relatively cheap to find Jaguar games.

I also collect (in order of priority): Dreamcast, Sega CD, 3DO, Genesis/32x, Master System, and Atari Lynx.

>Size of collection, displayed or not?
My Jaguar collection is my biggest. I'm only a handful of titles away from the complete NA library. Most proud of my Saturn collection. Pic related. I have Shining Force III, Dragon Force, and Saturn Bomberman in the mail from eBay. Also have pretty much every "must have" Dreamcast title as well. Snatcher, Popful Mail, and Shining Force CD are all in my Sega CD collection, and I have a copy of Lucienne's Quest for 3DO in as well. CIB copy of Earthbound is my crown jewel. My Genesis and Master System collections are very modest.

It's not as big as it used to be. My younger brother (and best friend, really) and I had a collection of non-retro titles that would put anyone to shame. 250+ PS2 titles, 150+ Xbox titles, and every major GameCube release, plus just about every 360, PS3, and Wii title worth mentioning released before 2010. He also had a CIB copy of every point and click adventure game released after 1987. No exaggeration. He shot himself dead in our game room in late 2009 at 18 years old. I told his friends to just take all the games and do whatever they wanted with them. It was just too tough to have those memories of him around. They sold them all to a pawn shop and donated the money for a scholarship in his honor that went to a high school classmate he would have graduated with six months later.

>Why retro videogames?
I was bored and dusted off the old N64, had fun, did the same with other old systems, bought a SNES since we skipped over 4th gen (I exclusively watched/played at friends houses), while I don't have any "real" connection to the PS1 I've always wanted to try out it's library.

I'll have to learn Jap for some of the GB games though, it'd certainly open up some options with other consoles too. (and non-annotated wordplay humor)

I don't collect retro vidya. I just play emulated roms and ISOs. I collect keychains and clocks, though.
>Completist/inbetween/casual and why?
What?
I like old games. I play old games almost exclusively. It would be completely exclusive were there not a few DS and GBA games that capture the classic vidya essense pretty well.
What's this about?
>Specific system(s) and why?
All of the popular 3rd gen, 4th gen, 5th gen consoles and their add-ons. 3DO, CD32, Pippin, Jaguar and similarly-lesser-known consoles don't count. MSX and its variants count. I like a few 2nd gen games, but not many. I can't be fucked with wading through the shit to get to the diamonds when it comes to 2nd gen. Pac-Clones are fun as was Adventure.

Used to collect music (buying my CDs, vinyls,...), DVD (collectors editions and stuff) and mangas but not anymore since I have a small flat.
>Completist/inbetween/casual and why?
A little of both. Last few games I played were up to the 120% because they were fun (Tombi, Parasite Eve and Portrait Of Ruin), but otherwise I wouldn't waste my time on it.

I would call myself a casual because I savestate a lot on emulation, but I remember I beat Commander Keen IV when I was around 10 and didn't have savestates so...
>Specific system(s) and why?
Super Nintendo, Playstation and some arcade. I don't know how but my first emu game was A Link To The Past followed by Chrono Trigger. Since then, I've been a JRPG fan and I love this particular "touch" of pixels unique to the Snes (I wouldn't know how to explain it, but I feel like the Snes GFX are really unique).

No money, no collection. Got about 20 PS2 games and 10 PSP games. PS2 games because my sister owns one and PSP for some RPGs (Crisis Core, Birth By Sleep and FFT).
>Why retro videogames?
Never had a console growing up while all the "cool kids" played Sonic (okay I got Sonic 3 & Knuckles Collection on PC), Super Mario Kart (okay I got Wacky Wheels),... I grew up dreaming of playing these games one day and discovered emulation when I was 14.

I don't play as often as I would like simply because of study and other interests. In terms of time spent playing and amount of games played I'd be casual or inbetween, but not in the type/quality of my games.
>Specific system(s) and why?
Most of my games are for PC. RPG's (mostly old rpg's) form a large percentage of the games I play, so PC seems logical.
>Size of collection, displayed or not?
Small, I don't know how people find the time to play more than a handful of games. Currently not displayed but only because of lack of shelf space (in my desk draw atm).

Got into gaming relatively late, late 90's. There's a nostalgia factor indeed but late 90's/early 00's are for me a golden age for games.

I have a number of systems. An AV Famicom, JVC X'Eye, SNES, Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox, GCN, 360, and first-gen PS3. Some of the more expensive systems were broken when I got them. I've gotten fairly good at fixing broken tech. Such as a mud covered Steel Battalion controller which I found for $15.

Why retro : because nostalgia and fun. But I must admit I own a 2500€ PC I built myself and some not-retro systems.
