Thoughts on Tenchu? Currently playing through it for the first time and enjoying it quite a bit. The soundtrack especially stands. The English voice acting is absolutely dreadful however. Is the sequel just as good?

One of my favorite series. With the first one being my favorite.
First one is definitely the best. Even with the limitations of the system and tank controls.

Second game is also very good but far worse in comparison. They managed to make the draw distance worse. Borked up the amazing art style they had on the first one. Same with the music. On the plus side, controls are better and they attempt an animu style plot.

Third one is excellent. They go back to the good music and good art style. Controls are also great and they add a bunch of cool new things.

Fourth one is very similar to the third, feels more like a spin-off. It's a girls only Tenchu that works well. Has an annoying timing thing with the stealth kills but it's optional.

DS Tenchu sucks ass.
PSP sucks too but you can play as Onikage, that's cool. Also, PS2 Tenchu ports.
Wii/PSP Tenchu sucks ass. Motion controls and gimmicks.
I haven't played Tenchu Z.

IMO: Tenchu > Tenchu 3 > Tenchu 2 > Tenchu Kurenai > The rest
Also, try Shinobido. The original team behind Tenchu moved on to it once the franchise got out of their hands.

Whenever I say Tenchu 2 is not the best there's always someone who spergs all over my comment about how it improved EVERYTHING.
You might just like it. Like I said, it's a great game on its own, but IMO worse than 1 and 3 in comparison.
But if you liked the art and music from the first one, then you're definitely going to miss it. Still, a must play.

Also, Japan has two versions of the first Tenchu.
The version that got released overseas later had improved AI, two extra stages and some tweaks. So they re-released it in Japan. In the first version you fight both bosses at once on the first stage.

>> No.7117550

The sequel controls a little better, but it has no music and the draw distance is awful. Voice acting is quite better seeing the plucked Colonel and Meryl from MGS to voice people, and also Luis from RE4 is Rikimaru. Worst offender for me is how they butchered the ranking system. Still a good game and worth playing, though.

Tenchu looks quite good and has a serviceable story and characters, but completely fails at being a good stealth game.
The most essential element of satisfying stealth gameplay is being aware of your surroundings at all times. Games from similar time solved it in different ways - MGS went with an obvious and simple solution of placing a radar in a corner, Thief went a bit more nuanced way of making footsteps comically loud and having guards grumble and hum tunes to telegraph their presence with 3D sound. Tenchu has neither of these, and to make it worse it also has tank controls. You have a massive blind spot behind your back and to the sides, and can't even whip the camera around quickly like in Thief because there's no mouse aiming on PS1. To make matters worse, peeking around corners is contextual like in MGS, but not every wall can be leaned against, and there's no clear visual indication.
The game feels like trying to sneak a 60 ton tank through a china shop. I didn't enjoy playing it at all.

Yes and no.
Art style is similar, but not as good.
Music is similar, but not as good.
Characters/Story is worse.
The gameplay is where Shinobido shines. You can see that Acquire wanted to try a shitload of new things with Tenchu but it was too late.
The whole engine they use is very very interesting. You can do several things using the AI and mechanics that makes it so that you have a dozen different approaches to each mission, depending on how you want to play it.
There are three factions fighting for power in the game. They'll fight each other if they have the chance. You can take on missions for any of the three lords, but it changes what happens next depending on how much you fuck it up.
For example, let's say you're on a mission to steal faction A's rice supplies. If you're spotted during the mission and don't kill the witnesses, your reputation will drop with faction A.
Also, the next time you enter a mission and faction A soldiers are in the map, they'll often stop during their walking routes and complain about being hungry. Giving you a huge window for a stealth kill.
You can deliver or steal weapon plans, which will also make it so that each faction will have soldiers with more and better equipment.
There was a mission in a mountain where a group of 8 soldiers were transporting money, all 8 walking very close to each other, nearly impossible to stealth kill all without a lengthy fight.
I found a bear and lured it with rice balls so it'd cross paths with the convoy. The bear ended up killing 6 of them before dying, so I finished the other two and finished the mission.
And I haven't even talked about alchemy. You can gather plants and ingredients and make all sorts of different potions, then infuse any of the items with it.

Just beat the game with Ayame. While certainly a little janky it's still quite enjoyable overall. The atmosphere, art direction and music are outstanding. My favorite levels were Missions 9 (Reclaim the Castle) and 5 (Execute the Corrupt Minister). I like that it doesn't solely focus on stealth but gives you enough combat prowess to take care of business once you get found out - actually digg the combat quite a bit even though a few more attack moves would've been welcome. The boss fights ARE GARBAGE - all of them! As is the voice acting. Intentional or not, that shit is straight up heinous.

It's been a while that used a CRT, but from what I remember there wasn't that much of a difference from a distance.
In fact I would think if you put a shader like that on a big tv it would probably look nothing like it used to back then.

Shaders become less noticeable the further away from the screen you sit of course. And certain crt shaders can be very fatiguing to the eye when viewed up close - mainly when the scanlines are very pronounced and your screen is really bright. It'll literally leave a grid afterimage imprinted in your mind. Not nice. Witt the shader I was using here I'd say the only thing left when viewed from afar is a shift to a warmer color palette maybe? Which I also enjoy honestly.

If you are, like me, in the habit of recording gameplay clips and converting them into WebMs then I can't recommend doing so with this shaders applied. Either remove the shader or turn off GPU recording in RetroArch. Otherwise you won't get satisfactory results unless you only record very very short clips at higher resolutions. This clip >>7115705 was recorded with GPU recording disabled which grabs the image before any shaders and resizing of the image takes place - but I can still play with the shader enable while recording all the same which is nice.

Going unseen and leaving everybody alive is a real challenge though so I mostly used to just kill everybody. When you sneak up on somebody and they don't see you before you get close enough you can one hit kill them, no combat involved at all. That being said the combat is actually pretty fun, kinda souls like with a lot of rolling, blocking and whiff punishment as only viable way to deal damage. Combat is not easy, I think it's hard almost to a point of punishment because it is supposed to be avoided.

I need to finally get my shit together and take care of my hard modded Xbox. Need to get a SATA adapter and install whatever homebrew is necessary to play games from the HDD because right now all the mod chip installed in it allows me to do, is play burned games from any region - and the DVD is giving out. I figure the chip will also allow me to more easily install homebrew however. At least I hope it does.

i fucking love tenchu z and i'll fight anyone who disagrees with me, i always hated the supernatural shit in tenchu and z basically gets rid of all of it and turns it into a ninja sim, which is what i wanted in the first place

it also happens to have the best mechanics and the customization is a welcome change, it just barely has a story
i would hardly say it abandons all its roots either, it's a way better ninja game than FROM's other efforts that were more true to the source material

I remember liking it too, it was different but it had nice things like creating your own ninja and a shitton of missions, could probably be the Tenchu with more content. But I also remember the ranking system being fucked up and it probably has "aged" (I don't like the word but you know what I mean) worse than the Ps2 games, art direction wasn't too good and like most early games from that gen they just looked worse than the last games of the preceding gen. If you liked the realist setting Fatal Shadows was 100% that, personally my favourite in the series.
I miss Tenchu so much, you can't really say any series have replicated what made Tenchu so great, besides Shinobido and it's even more forgotten.

>> No.7142894

for some reason i really bounced off fatal shadows when i first played it, the mechanics just felt worse somehow and the levels were too linear

Can't be more linear than WoH's.

>> No.7143110

>>7143105
You can easily be more linear. Wrath of Heaven has bigger levels than Fatal Shadows, and more paths in them.

The mechanics aren't worse, but the enemies are placed much more sadistically and WoH defaults to a lower difficulty setting.

Could've used more polish though. Sure it has more mechanics, you moved faster and the camera was less janky, but I remember the previous games having snappier controls.

I was always confused by the connection between Fromsoft and Tenchu. None of the games I played ever had the logo. Looks like they had nothing to do with Wrath of Heaven, which is my favorite.
If there's any game Tenchu doesn't need to be anything like, it is Bloodborne.

From Software never had anything to do with Tenchu. The only Tenchu they developed is a xbox360 one that looks like bomberman.
The DS one was developed by some other chumps. The rest were all by either Acquire or K2.
They just own the rights to the franchise ATM, that's all.

classic tenchu straight up is nigh-entirely made of 90 degree walls that you can creep against, and you straight up have a button that disconnects the camera from following you to get a bigger look around yourself or from around corners than Metal Gear Solid had. Plus you had an indicator for a general vicinity of the nearest person. if anything you had a ton of leeway, the biggest problem was finagling the controls.
