The canon reason that Yuri even fights to begin with is that her father taught her the very basics of Kyokugen-ryuu after she was kidnapped in AoF1. Her techniques are very basic and self-defense oriented, she's miles below both her brother and Robert.

Art of Fighting is set during the late 70s and early 80s, while Fatal Fury is definitely set in 92 (FF1) and 93 (FF2). Since Jeff is still alive in AoF1 (Geese ordered Yuri's kidnapping to convince Takuma to kill Jeff), then it's set at least 10 years apart from Fatal Fury.
If you go by the character ages in the original games, then AoF1 is set during 1978, and AoF2 during 1979. Ryo was born in 1957, and he's 21 during AoF1.

Nothing was ever retconned, KOF is just its own separate timeline. The original AOF/FF timeline stayed in use all the way up to Garou Mark of the Wolves, and it was never officially retired, they just stopped making games in those series.

Yuri was never as good again as she was in Art of Fighting 2 when the aerobics thong she wears over her tights was properly visible.
Shit man, those are hot as fuck but they exist for a proper practical reason. I don't like how its played down or even eliminated in later games and we're supposed to think she just has leggings on or something. Not only is is less hot but its lest aesthetic in all other regards.
Karin has the same stupid problem in Street Fighter 5 where they leave the briefs off her 'nostalgia' costume even though they are one of the key distinguishing features. That flash of white during certain moves is now just a black void. Its a terrible idea.

Yuri never fully recovered in my view. Not just in this aspect but in a hundred others. If only they had stuck to the design of Art of Fighting 2 Yuri and rode it out instead of making her less, I dunno, womanly. I guess I just don't 'believe' the later Yuris as much, but that's a personal matter.

AOF had a lot of innovations that SF didn't have at the time, like a power bar, super moves, taunts, bonus games that actually give you new moves/better stats and a story mode with dialogue cutscenes. But it ended up being perceived as a shameless SF ripoff because Ryo and Robert are similar to Ryu and Ken. Dan came about as a cheeky answer to that, and I guess Yuri became kind of an answer to Dan for a while. Though these days all of her Capcom moves are gone, as SNK seems to have gotten shy about all the references they used to do. Leona's Kamen Rider pose is also gone and K9999 is forbidden to even be mentioned. Meanwhile Dan is as AOF as ever in SFV.

Yeah I don't think anyone is talking about sprite quality, just art direction. KOFXIII is still one of the best looking fighting games of all time. Many characters still looked weird though like Mai and Yuri faces, Terry, Ralf and Clark roided up and Ryo being bootleg Akuma.

When it comes to sex appeal I don't like the direction Yuri has taken. Yuri used to have very good thighs, now her legs are very skinny. They're pushing her more and more "Tomboy" so they cut her hair off. And because she's forever going to be the little sister of Mai & King she'll probably never get these assets back.
