I played it on Xbox as a teen and got to and beat the final story. Always thought it felt like a slightly more floaty Sonic Heroes but you adapt to it pretty quickly. Some of the "kill everything" missions fucking sucked though, like killing all the artificial Chaos in that one ARK stage.

Honestly you'd probably be not far off. Having just Forces followed up by Team Racing would've been a pretty bad look, with then only the IDW comic and the Forces-themed mobile runner keeping the franchise afloat. Wonder how long it'll be till they say what the next game is gonna be? People from the Mania team have been winknudging that a Mania 2 -might- be on the horizon from Evening Star probably though Sega haven't said anything yet. I can't even imagine what it'll be, maybe they'll actually cave and remake one of the Adventure games or something.
