It also had the appeal that every single character was viable in pvp, while SF2 was just Ken/Ryu and maybe Guile, then there was one more competitive guy added in the expansion but he had exactly the same moves as Ken/Ryu, so not really.

Only a zoomer could think SF2 wasn't 99% pvp in the arcade. No one goes to the arcade and pays 50 cents to play against a fucking NPC. And of those matches 90% where Ken/Ryu and the other 10% was the contrarian Guile user. The main reason they made two versions of the Ken/Ryu character was so you could always play him regardless of what the other guy picked because he is the only good character. SF2 is essentially a game with 1 playable character and a bunch of NPCs that are irrelevant in arcade pvp. Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 , every character is viable.
