Joe Siegler also believes ROTT was the first game with Non-Linear Level Progression: "It's nowhere near as pronounced as it was in Hexen, but in Extreme ROTT (not the original ROTT), if you got to the first level of Episode 2 (called High Road Low Road), you were presented with a choice. There were two exits on this level. One took you to Episode 2 Level 2, and the other took you to like Episode 2 Level 5. Because of the way the game was constructed, the boss level had to be a specific number (I think Level 9 on Episode 2). The bosses had special game coding such that you had to use them on the level number they were originally designed for, or the game would crash - hence the problem (crashing) in my original "Vomitorium" level. Anyway, Tom took the player through a different way to get to the end of Episode 2 there. Depending on which exit you took in E2L1, you'd get a different set of levels taking you to Episode 2 boss level. Again, it's nowhere near as pronounced as it was in Hexen, but if my memory serves, Rise of the Triad was the first game such as this not to progress in Level 1,2,3,4,5 order 100% of the time."

ROTT's engine also had some primitive 3D features like being able to jump on top of objects and enemies (with Doom, you couldn't do that). If you jumped on top of an enemy (except for bosses), they'd die if you stood on 'em for more than one second. This went for other players too so you could crush them in Deathmatches. There were a few particular places (Like "The Corpseyard") where this was easy to do. The game had a "Oh yeah, you've been crushed" text remark that came up when someone did this to you.

Another strange thing that came with ROTT was an infinite random level generator (RANDROTT). That's right… computer made levels. Actually, there wasn't an infinite amount…there was "only" 2,147,483,648 (2 billion, 146 million, 483 thousand, 648) random level sequences. I thought this was the only game to ever have this, but Joe Siegler pointed out that FormGen's two add on level packs for Wolf3D: Spear of Destiny (Just think of it as Ultimate Wolfenstein) included a random level generator with the CD version. That was the first known random level generator (for 3D action games) that I know of. Apogee also sold an addon for Wolf3D called "Wolf 3D Super Upgrades", which had a random level generator for Wolf3D, but that came out after ROTT.

The add-on pack, Extreme ROTT added other things like like moving walkways to ride on, Ballistitowers (fires dozens of missiles at you at once) Oscurovators (teleporters), Climbing GADs, Impossiboulders, FireRisers and tons of other stuff with weird names.

I recently played through plutonia uv saveless and I must say that map 12 was probably one of the most frustrating for me. 14 is also a real problem if you can't find the secrets, and Map 25 was probably the only one that killed me more. Interestingly, the "hard" levels like go 2 it were comparatively pretty easy just cause they give you so much good ammo.

- Bonuses for killing in special ways.
- Useful starting weapon.

I disagree with melee being interesting, seeing as it's just faster melee strikes that do more damage that goes into a takedown animation after landing a killing blow. The kick knocking enemies flat on their ass is good though.

I found out that Bungie was once developing a 3D Marathon game, Marathon 3, that was supposed to be the actual sequel to Marathon 2 while Infinity would remain as a spin-off. It was cancelled for these reasons:
1. Bungie felt that Infinity was actually a good conclusion to Marathon and they weren't really that motivated into making another game.
2. It was being developed at the same time as Quake and when they saw Quake, they decided that they didn't really want to compete with it and scrapped it.

Extreme Rise of the Triad is DEFINITELY not for everyone and there are some stage ou literally cannot beat with the male characters because they're too slow. There were some secrets in the original that were like that but this is to just get through the stage. One in particular puzzle (pushing pillars into a row and running across the top of them) can ONLY be done by Thi Barrett for some reason even though Lorelei is faster. I think it's very fun, but I also think he isn't really talking about the gameplay much, and he isn't very good at showing it off by just posting old .gifs and screenshots. If he was serious about showing it off, he should be recording fun .webms of the game (such as fighting Spray, biting and barking people to death in Dog Mode, showing off the Engine Killing Gibs, or using the Excalibat to kill enemies in melee).

It's hard to remember all the level names.

Doom: Spawning Vats is very labyrinthine which I enjoy and has solid texturing. Pandemonium is another very well-designed labyrinth. Hell Beneath is a good shock to the system in terms of difficulty, but short enough that it doesnt get tiring.
Doom 2: The Focus. Just a very solid level in a game full of gimmicky and ugly maps.
Duke 3D: Hollywood Holocaust. Its an obvious choice but its so action-packed and interconnected that it perfectly encapsulates everything good about the game. Hotel Hell is a similarly great level. Flood Zone gets props for the creative theme with the flooded areas.
Blood: Overlooked Hotel. Very labyrinthine map with good atmosphere. Dark Carnival, because the theme is fun and it's where the game's action really picks up. The Siege is cool too with the bombardment.
Shadow Warrior: Again the first level is a great introduction to the game and has a lot of cool optional paths and secrets. Floating Fortress is awesome with the huge boat and all. Dark Woods Of The Serpent has some annoying moments but I have to appreciate how big it is and how it feels like an adventure.

Fun. The ROTTposter is right there is nothing else like it in the genre really except maybe the 2013 remake which despite what you may have heard other say.

The shareware is its own episode not in the full release. If you play it make sure to play the Lasersoft Deluxe Edition, it has 3 extra levels. Only play EROTT if you're crazy about the game.

I really do like it and wish other anons would talk ROTT sometimes. Like whats your favorite weapon? Favorite episode/boss? The Lightning Guards being able to steal your weapons is a real pain in the ass and the Strike Force guys that roll dodge your shots and missiles is impressive for the time. Fuck Monks they're bullet sponges.

DOSBox has the issue of mouse movement not being able to be disabled, you can use novert.com to fix that. WinROTT is ok but has alot of bugs. I'd wait for the rerelease which is supposed to have all the Deluxe levels and EROTT included.

Catacomb Abyss is better than Wolfenstein 3D but it's not better than Doom or Duke. Duke is much, much, much better than Doom, pretty undebateable. In fact Doom is probably the worst Doom engine game. Heretic and Hexen and Strife were much more advanced. I personally haven't used zandromun, (i personally just use gz when I want to co-op) so if the wiki says its correct then that should be fine.

UFOdoom, single episode but is a major nostalgia hit if you've played UFO Defense, very cool being able to run trough classic UFO maps including a terror mission, base assault and the base itself

I get what you're both saying, but I agree with him more. It looks like a dungeon with some sewer details in the textures.
But I like the style of the textures, and the enemy animations (though they would look nicer with some rotations).
It does some things quite well, but the level design does feel flat and lacking. Shrine has the same issue imo, but to a lesser extent...

The Golden Age of FPS began with Wolfenstein 3D in 1992... It died on November 19, 1998 with the release of Half-Life.

It was an age marked by countless great shooters, all with maximum amounts of soul. But then came Half-Life and it all disappeared.

The gameplay is poor in comparison to most FPS’, but is an out-right joke compared to games of the era that require... you know, actual enemy prioritisation, quick on your feet thinking, using the right weapons in the right scenarios, staying on the move and using unique movement styles to your advantage, having to explore the environment for resources, having to keep ammo in mind constantly etc. etc. Half-Life’s balancing in all regards is awful and its mostly hitscan oriented gameplay doesn’t work when you have innaccurate weapons and fast moving (and firing) enemies that force you to stay out in the open to kill anything, except you can’t avoid taking damage outside of taking cover due to the very nature of hitscan. And platforming is annoying when your movement is frustratingly slippery. Who the hell has ever enjoyed the platforming elements of Half-Life? And apparently Half-Life has puzzle elements, but I don’t know, unless you’re 5 years old I’m not sure how anything about this game is puzzling... except of course how it managed to grow such a butthurt community of fanboys. Half-Life’s combat sucked then and it sure as hell sucks now in retrospect. It’s aged like already sour milk.

It fucking sucks and it killed FPS. It ushered in the Dark Age of FPS.

Actually the golden FPS age died after Doom 2... all future pixel shooters like ROTT just added meme shit to try to make themselves stand out from the dreaded doom clone misnomer. Build engine games were always wonky trash that were only praised for their aesthetics and presentation, which in a way makes them the first FPS games to promote the "form over function" style that ruins every modern game. Quake 1 was alright but its sequels are still responsible for cowadoody and spawning the cringeworthy esports scene (Q3A).
