New to the high end CRT world, looking to get a Sony PVM for use with older consoles.

I found a local "lightly used" PVM20MU with a crack in the case with no listed price. What should I try to get this thing for? Any tips on buying PVMs?

It's worth maybe $300 if the bulb's in really good condition if you're taking it home yourself. I'd try to get it for $200 or so just so you can get yourself a good deal.

Also, for tips, ask the seller how many hours the bulb has on it, find out whether the PVM uses aperture grille tech or not. If it doesn't, avoid it.

When you're there, ask the owner if you can power it on and look at the picture quality. Have the PVM display a solid white or something to see if it has uniform color distribution. You might want to bring in some RGB modded console so you can see if the image is blurry or not (a lot of these monitors with age loose their sharpness).

Here's a question:

If CRTs are so better, how come we can see the difference between the two?

Damn, Boy. What you don't kmow could fill a book. First off, all Trinitrons are aperture grille. That's the point of Trinitrons. Second, there are fantastic monitors oit there that aren't aperture grille they just on't necessarily produce "muh scanlines" so accurately.

A 20" pvm in perfect condition isn't even going to fetch $200 with local pickup. A fair start would be to offer the seller $50 but you might be able to low ball him. You have to read his motivation between the lines of his listing.

Wouldn't it mean that since our modern screens can see both screens and their differences, we're better than CRTs?

Can't play light gun games on most new displays.

I'm trying to say that the CRT and LCD screens are contrast screen to what you see on your monitor which is wonder why the graphics are different

I meant that the CRT screens and something that kind of really don't ever do? Not that it matters much..

This is the second time this's been asked

No, because you're just seeing some differences. I can show you a side by side photo of an emulator running Asteroids and a true vector screen, and you can see the difference, that doesn't mean Asteroids will be just fine on an LCD.

You'd need a filter and even that would be a mere approximation

It's a PVM. That means it's a Trinitron, thus it uses an Aperture Grille.

A crack in the case really doesn't matter, just so long as the tube and electronics work correctly.

Offer $50; It's a fair price for a cosmetically damaged, but relatively low hour tube.

Any idea on it's manufacture date?

He should pay up to what it's worth to him. Less if possible but never more.

>Shadow Mask vs. Aperture grille

It comes down to personal preference. I just like shadow-masks, and the very, very slight bluriness they have is a benefit to older sprite games. If you're using emulation, the cables are going to be higher end, and very crisp and clear.

As I said, seems to come down to personal preference. I grew up with Shadowmask CRTs, so I'm most comfortable with them.
