/crt/ general, let's talk about our favorite gaming mediums. I just picked up one of these and can't find much info on it. Anyone know the JVC TM-R14U? It's got RGB and mine is dated 1985.

what did you expect? people threw out their CRTs years ago. look for local video hire companies, live event AV companies, old/low-budget broadcast studios, hospitals and military facilities. universities and even schools occasionally still have them. a high end CCTV video monitor in good condition (check for burn in from grid or timecode) is better than a worn out Trinitron, it's worth considering factors other than brand name

I've tried the composite channel so far (inb4 fucking idiot use rgb, well I don't have a modded system like NESRGB yet to do that) and while it looks good, it's not blowing my nuts off like I expected. I'm assuming this will improve drastically once I put in Tim's RGB kit?

Hi /crt/

I've an old CRT without a remote control. How can i do the "search for channels" thing?

With the "P" button you can change between channels and volumen adjustment. And with "-"/"+" you can either navigate channels or increase/decrease the volume.

pic related shows the only buttons on the front panel.

E-cycling places are a good place to look. They're literally crt collectors. Be aware that once you contact them you'll probably tip them off that some monitors may be worth something. You may get one pass through before they start selling monitors they run into themselves via offerup or craigslist.
there's a e-waste/crt dump here in my city that now permanently has ads up on offerup selling untested broadcast monitors at basically market value.

Be aware as well that e-waste places are often paid by weight. Smaller places may directly equate lifting stuff from their in-pile as taking their money. Approach them first, tell them what you want to do, and tell them CRT's are great for old games. Be nice about it. If they balk, slow down and point out you're keeping stuff out of landfill, and promise to bring it back if you ever get rid of it.

This is why I prefer slotmask sets to trinitrons. Personal taste and all, sure, but the image feels like it has a more natural composition. Trinitrons trade the woven pattern of the picture for the blunt force of a uniform brightness boost. That would have been great in the 80s and earlier when shadowmask sets were much worse but a JVC or Toshiba from the 2000s kicks its ass.

Anyone do much tubeswapping?
Any easy way to protect kids/dogs from tubes with no chassis connected? Is my best bet to cut up dead flybacks and attach anode cup to ground?
Any thoughts for a chassis I can hook up to a tube with a 100hz yoke/sources? Unfortunately some dumb cunt pulled a Drakon and glued the fuck out of the already bonded yoke, and the cathodes/phosphors are in great nick save for some very minor burn, so don't want to take the risk of necking it but as it stands its a 50Kg+ paperweight since I can't get a new flyback.

I own its cheaper, more lightweight relative, the TM-R9U- it dates from September 1984 but looking on Ebay the date codes go all the way into the mid 90s.

Outside of slight chromatic aberration it's a damn good monitor. Extremely durable.

I can give that a go, but for some reason the image goes black and white when I get to the color settings. It's just that colors look pretty good and I don't want to mess them up.

Kinda the same here. It's green on a blue scene, but red on blue and yellow on red.

That being said Sony Pvms/Bvms have curved screens and can accept component with a Bnc to Rca adapter.

It's a great tv, but like anon said, you can get it for free. Any consumer CRT is worth absolutely nothing at the moment. The niche CRT market just isn't large enough to drive up the price of a consumer CRT. Rare PVMs on the other hand, are a different story.

What will you be playing games on? I could tell you the easiest way to set it up. Also, yes you can use this tv, and yes it will be extremely cozy. Few know that the console TVs are secret gems, because having a nice wood grain on the tv turns it into a piece of furniture rather than an autism box

OP here, still lurking. I have compared my new JVC professional monitor to my flat screen early 2000s consumer Trinitron, and indeed composite looks better on the Trinitron. It could be also because the Trinitron has a much larger screen, but I don't know for sure. Either way, I've ordered an RGB mod kit for my NES and plan to compare the JVC's RGB quality. Added RGB input to 1981 ASA Futura. There was DB9 connector cutout for some option on back panel and input for TTL RGB on colour decoder board, modified it for analog input. CRT is somewhat tired and has low'ish dot pitch, but at least it can now display 60Hz in color.

I got a couple of questions, if anyone would help:

This is my Sony KV-20S10 from 1994 recently pulled from storage.

Know anything about cleaning and tuning these? Or should I take it to a specialist? Picture still looks great but I'm sure there are some adjustments that could be made.

I also don't have a remote, any recommendations there?

I want to hook an HTPC up to it and emulate old titles, HDMI -> S-Video. Is that recommended? It's the best input that it can take.

an $8 universal remote would probably work fine. If your phone has an rf blaster you can just download and use a free universal remote app.
Cleaning is very easy, tuning depends on your make and model. I usually take the enclosures off and blast with an air compressor. It also gives you a chance to take a look inside and do some isopropyl cleaning if you see a spilled coke or something. This might all be too much bother for this particular consumer set. It looks like the best input option is composite. If it looks okay, just leave it alone and use it until it breaks. plug in a softmodded wii for emulation and/or look for a free pc crt for your pc.

Hello /CRT/

I cut apart a MDIN8 connector and a component cable, used this diagram to create a breadboard that runs the RGB pins from the genesis directly to a component cable, which I hooked into BNC on my PVM. Works great (connector didn't fit right and I had to shave off some plastic on the genesis video out tho), except the audio is buzzy. I'm guessing it's a grounding issue but idk what.

Anyway just came here to brag and post some pics, and possible get some help fixing the audio problem.

On paper it's a pretty standard mid-range CRT monitor. But it might be worth it if it is a low-hours unit with a tube still in good condition. The thing about PC CRTs is that they're becoming increasingly rare, especially ones that are in good nick. Last year I picked up an NEC Accusync 900, which is a pretty good monitor though nothing to write home about (ie, it's not like I found a Sony F520). But critically, it was brand new in the box. So I have a brand new, bright, flawless tube which I can save for occasional use.

Nice, I have a small JVC TM-910SU which I use for my desktop setup. It's a really nice, JVC units are often overlooked because a lot of them don't have RGB, but S-Video is almost as good and you can have "almost as good" results for hundreds less than a Sony solution.

I got a bunch of bvm-d20f1u for $100 each just a couple weeks ago, with literally hundreds of 13-14' monitors sitting in a warehouse just waiting for me to go back for them. Just within the past year ive also found a pvm 14n2u for $5 at flea market, needed caps and a pvm 20l2 on the curb, working perfectly.
They're definitely still out there. I think a problem is nerds like to talk about themselves when they buy shit. Talking so much that next time a seller comes across another monitor to sell, they have a much better idea of the market.

I remember finding out about them purely by chance around 2013 because someone on /a/ posted a picture of them playing some obscure 90s anime on one. This is 100% an issue. A friend of mine got a 14" PVM earlier in 2020, pretty good deal, only $50. There was a guy selling dozens of them, clearing out an old broadcasting van. Using a Compaq FS740 as a TV with an external tuner and a HDMI to VGA converter.

This channel is 720P so I have it on 720P mode.

Also does 1080i and accepts 1080p.
It didn't seem to do 1080P with my computer, but does it with the converter.

Depends on how the conversion back to RGB is done. Color processing circuitry might be somewhat bandwidth limited compared to direct RGB insertion inputs. Some more modern sets on the other hand might convert RGB to YPbPr internally to implement contrast/brightness/color controls and then convert back to RGB, which might be even worse.

Anon with the Trinitron that needs punching to work here. (TL;DR: it'll turn on but then give out at random, either with a small light in the center or nothing at all and needs a punch for the electron gun to start. speakers work the whole time.)
I've discharged it (I hope) and taken some pics of just about every board I can see on the inside. I really just want to know where I should start looking b/c I can't find a schematic of this model (KV27S15) and while repairing cracked solder joints everywhere would be a great, I want to locate what's causing the issue first.
I don't expect any diagnosis from the attached pic I just want to know where to start looking.

It depends on what you're wanting to do. If you want to play old games at 240p then you need a VGA To RGB SCART Adapter and to set your Graphics Card to output the 15khz signal the CRT TV needs using software. Then set the resolution to 320x240. I use Soft15khz and Quickres. But that's old now.

If you just want to play Half-Life or something then, like the other anon says, you want a CRT PC Monitor. Some Graphics Cards had S-Video out so you could hook them to a CRT TV but it looks like crap. Some Graphics Cards support Component Out but they're rare and that's dependent on your CRT having component.

Anyone know a good product for an hdmi to av/s-video converter? something fucked up on my current one and it squishes everything to fit 16:9 when before if I set the second display to a 4:3 resolution it wouldn't get black bars

most likely has to do with condition of the set rather than the model itself. It looks like it uses a tube very common to the 90s models like pic related.
If you want to fix it, a big smokey capacitor has to be one of the huge power supply capacitors that hold like 20kV. Or there's arcing going on, in which case you should take the back off and turn it on to see if it sparks anywhere

Replacing a capacitor is a braindead operation. You use a cheap shitty soldering iron you bought from Harbor Freight, heat the solder up, pull the old cap, put in a new cap of the same values, and run some solder on each side and then check that it flowed well and set up okay. If it didn't, tap the iron to it until it does.
Turning an old screw without stripping it requires more thought and skill.

What's the cheapest way to capture RGB? I have a amplified switch that gives extra RGB outputs both through SCART and RCA connectors. Actual RGB capture cards seem pretty expensive and are seemingly always only PCI-E which would prevent me from connecting it to a laptop which would be more convenient since I don't keep my consoles and CRT setup in the same room as my desktop computer. But what if I get one of those upscalers and connect that to a simple HDMI capture card? Which one should I get for that?

Retard here, I picked up a Sony PVM-14M2U from a television production company that was clearing out their storage, but I don't know what I'm doing really.
I ordered some bnc to rca converters to run video in, will I be able to run Composite video into the Line A input through a converter?
Also I have an N64 with svideo that I run through a retrotink right now, and this looks like it has svideo in, but the cable I have doesn't fit (I didn't try to force it very hard).
Anything else I should know? Sorry I'm new to all this so forgive my lack of knowledge
