What games were ignored and were commercial failure while released but now considered classics?

So far can only think of Castlevania SOTN.

Earthbound

To a lesser extent Super Metroid, considering the scope of games back then I'm surprised it didn't sell a lot more. I blame Metroid I and II.

Bad Fur Day tanked at release iirc. Didn't help that Nintendo wouldn't promote it.

Grim Fandango didn't sell well, which marked the end of adventure games for awhile until indie games started reviving the genre.

System Shock 2 only sold like 50,000 copies when it came out. Vampire the Masquerade only sold about 70,000.

>Symphony of the Night received wide critical acclaim at the time of its release. Critics lauded the massive, free-to-explore game world with its numerous secrets to uncover, and praised the game for integrating role-playing elements without compromising the series' basic gameplay.
>Despite the popular consensus of the time that 2D had become outmoded, critics also highly praised the game's graphics for their smooth animation, impressive effects, and evocation of atmosphere.
>Initially, the game's commercial performance was mediocre, particularly in the United States where it was meagerly publicized, but thanks to praise by critics, it gained sales through word-of-mouth and became a hit. The PlayStation and Saturn versions sold 225,862 units in Japan, while the PlayStation version sold 477,304 units in the United States, for a total of 703,166 units sold in the United States and Japan.

Sales of most Mega Man and Metroid games were never, perhaps surprisingly, all that stellar. But it's hard to judge these things with sales numbers due to how prevalent renting was in the US market.

The Neverhood.
>Mention The Neverhood to anyone who has played the game and chances are you'll evoke a childish ear-to-ear grin out of the gamer. The problem is, said gamer will be hard to find since this award-winning 1996 title sold roughly 41,000 units (according to the marketing organization NPD Group).

Did Earthbound cost more than normal games at release? I know they bundled it with the player's guide, but idk if that jacked up the price. If it did then that's why no one bought it.
