"Graphics".

I mean using the term every 5 seconds in a gaming conversation. I remember in the N64/PSX era 'graphics' was such a buzzword on the playground, in magazines and on adverts.

People obviously still brag about visuals but I've I don't hear that one all-powerful word being used like it was.

To be fair, there wasn't really a good concise term for it at the time. You could say "visuals" but that didn't pop as much as "graphics" and graphics is still an accurate term.

However now since game design has so much more that go into them we can describe things better like "the textures are very muddy" or "the edges are really rough and there is no anti-aliasing" or "the sprites are too low resolution".

But back during the 8-32 bit eras, those kinds of descriptions didn't really apply.

I'd say some games still have that concept, like fighting games, where player 1 starts on the left side. Maybe that doesn't matter to dedicated fighting game players, but if that's true, then it wouldn't have mattered to them back in the day either.

I'd say it also matters in games where the first player is locked into a certain character (ex Mario in NSMB), but that's probably the exception rather than the rule these days.

The point is that it was ingrained in the minds of players who had been using joysticks for some time. Let's say in the future, video games aren't controlled by any digital input (i.e. a controller), but instead by your thoughts as amplified by a band you wear on your head. Chances are, you'd probably ask "where's the controller?" when you can't find that band.

And really, aside from the Wii/Wii U, what controller resembles a PAD, most definitions of which involve a flat and/or rectangular object?

hit points and magic points

it's a bit confusing because they can easily stand for health points and mana points, and some games say that's what they stand for, but originally it was hit points and magic points. Hit points come from fucking D&D pre-vidya, not sure what the first game to use "magic points" was since originally D&D and games based on it (even Final Fantasy) used the spells-per-day system.

Was Dragon Quest the first game with MP?

As kids my brother and myself used to make up words that we knew what the other meant.

Spikes on Sonic was nails to us. They look like giant white nails sticking up and not so much of a spiked area to us. We were seriously only thinking of the 2D plane and not what it could had looked like in 3D. Sonic 3D Blast made it look much more like spikes for example. We seriously thought it was just four nails that sonic was too stupid to walk around of. Video game logic doesn't have to explain shit.

Pits or areas that kill you when you reach the end of the screen were "falldowns" for us. You fell down (off) of the area. Made sense to call it that at the time and once in a while I still find myself using that made up term out of habit. Sonic 3 + S&K was pretty much my childhood.

"Did you beat the game yet?" We always say beat or beaten. We never use the term complete. "I have beat the game 100%"

Those are pretty much the only things I remember from my childhood when it come to the terms we use. I am pretty sure we were borderline retarded when we were kids.

I really don't know why these wre called like that. I guesses since they had , at first, both pinball and arcade machines people went with the one they already knew, pinball, and the arcade machines were called that.

The one I used to frequent had a Rocola, a bazillion of figthers, some Aero Figthers, I think, and the fucking awesome Cadillacs and Dinousaurs.

Later, the Rocola, as my neighbourhood called it, also used to rent SNES and PS1 games disguised as Arcade Machines. I have a memory of seeing a guy playing Super Mario World on the Forest of Illusion there, and I was impressed as fuck because I could never got past Iggy's Castle back then.

Then I went and said I wanted to play "Rockman". Back then I recently had gotten my own SNES with a 6-in-1 bootleg game that included the japanese version of Rockman X. So the dude attending the arcade said that he got one and he fucking started Mega Man X4 on an Arcade Machine. Then I reached the first boss, wowed by the graphics, and the boss killed me so hard that I started crying or some bullshit like that. That first level scared me to death, mainly in the second Act when all the city sky trned red.

I have more arcade stories if you guys want me to share.

That feel. You lend a game to a friend and next time you talk to him/her they say, well I lend it to a friend/relative and they lend it to someone and so on and so on.. And then you never saw it again. :(

Anyway, Swedfag here.
I remember calling it finish the game (klara spelet) but then there was people who said something like "lap" the game (varva spelet). You know like when you drive past a car and pass the whole course and then drive past the same car again. to me it always sounded like they finished the game twice!

And another thing I remember when playing games like street fighter 2 or mortal combat is people who used what we refered to as chicken/coward style (fegisstilen). like let's say you are playing mortal combat and you get stuck in a corner and your buddy keep sweeping you over and over and fucking over again. You never get the chance to get up.

Also we used a lot of english lingo as:
The boss = bossen
the level = leveln
level up = levla

There are no leaves or racoons in Mario 3. You grab the tail before it falls and then you have a tail.

A world is made up of levels, and a level is made up of stages.

Any special ability is a power. You get a flower and get firepower. You get an invincible and you get star power. You beat Magnet Man and get magnet power. You swallow a knight and he gives you sword power, and if you get hit you have to eat the star or you lose your power. You get a mushroom in Mario 2 and you get...more power.

Yeah. Do they mention her name anywhere in the game at all?

Because I rented it and it didn't come with instructions.

I heard the first one as a kid.

I'm calling fridge brilliance on the second one, it's totally possible that someone saw an odd colour of pokemon (i.e. what we call shiny) and made up the "pikablu" to explain it. Works whether we're talking about a real 10 year old or a fictional pokemon trainer in-game that created the myth.

Although I always called them 1-ups, I've become very partial to the term "Mans"

I still have the manual for my copy of Dragon Warrior. Completely intact, good condition. Comes with complete list if items with artwork for each, a full walkthrough for the game including maps, and a prologue story from the Dragonlord's POV in the back.
It's seriously my most treasured retro possession.

Or someone saw a picture of Marill's concept art online and went "holy shit!" and made up a bunch of shit or shared it with people who made up a bunch of shit.

When I first played Super Smash Brothers I had never even heard of the Mother series. I thought Ness was some kind of weird Japan only Pokemon trainer kid who had his own weird Pikachu powers because his PK Thunder sounded like "Pikathunder". I also thought he was just some original character made up by the game creators. Pretty silly.

I can't be the only one who thinks the cartoon-y 2d sprite appearance of Mario Bros is sick as fuck? I want a modern sprite-based 2D Mario platformer, Arc-System works pls

Pikablu was a G1 rumor, it predates shinies. It was based on Marill as >>735482 said, since Marill was one of the earliest G2 designs released
