I mean using the term every 5 seconds in a gaming conversation. I remember in the N64/PSX era 'graphics' was such a buzzword on the playground, in magazines and on adverts.

People obviously still brag about visuals but I've I don't hear that one all-powerful word being used like it was.

Probably has a lot to do with that fact that I'm not a 12 year old anymore with a limited vocabulary...

To be fair, there wasn't really a good concise term for it at the time. You could say "visuals" but that didn't pop as much as "graphics" and graphics is still an accurate term.

However now since game design has so much more that go into them we can describe things better like "the textures are very muddy" or "the edges are really rough and there is no anti-aliasing" or "the sprites are too low resolution".

But back during the 8-32 bit eras, those kinds of descriptions didn't really apply.

it's a bit confusing because they can easily stand for health points and mana points, and some games say that's what they stand for, but originally it was hit points and magic points. Hit points come from fucking D&D pre-vidya, not sure what the first game to use "magic points" was since originally D&D and games based on it (even Final Fantasy) used the spells-per-day system.

IIRC, when you first get Ed Edison's help after our heroes split and Bernard is trying to contact Hoagie, you give him some blueprints. As kids my brother and myself used to make up words that we knew what the other meant.

Spikes on Sonic was nails to us. They look like giant white nails sticking up and not so much of a spiked area to us. We were seriously only thinking of the 2D plane and not what it could had looked like in 3D. Sonic 3D Blast made it look much more like spikes for example. We seriously thought it was just four nails that sonic was too stupid to walk around of. Video game logic doesn't have to explain shit.

Pits or areas that kill you when you reach the end of the screen were "falldowns" for us. You fell down (off) of the area. Made sense to call it that at the time and once in a while I still find myself using that made up term out of habit. Sonic 3 + S&K was pretty much my childhood.

"Did you beat the game yet?" We always say beat or beaten. We never use the term complete. "I have beat the game 100%"

Those are pretty much the only things I remember from my childhood when it come to the terms we use. I am pretty sure we were borderline retarded when we were kids.

I really don't know why these wre called like that. I guesses since they had , at first, both pinball and arcade machines people went with the one they already knew, pinball, and the arcade machines were called that.

The one I used to frequent had a Rocola, a bazillion of figthers, some Aero Figthers, I think, and the fucking awesome Cadillacs and Dinousaurs.

Then I went and said I wanted to play "Rockman". Back then I recently had gotten my own SNES with a 6-in-1 bootleg game that included the japanese version of Rockman X. Then I reached the first boss, wowed by the graphics, and the boss killed me so hard that I started crying or some bullshit like that. That first level scared me to death, mainly in the second Act when all the city sky trned red.

Beating a game meant getting to the end credits any which way possible (warp pipes, skipping side shit, etc.), Completing a game meant getting every side thing/completing every level, and Clocking a game meant you did a speed run. I'm calling fridge brilliance on the second one, it's totally possible that someone saw an odd colour of pokemon (i.e. what we call shiny) and made up the "pikablu" to explain it. Works whether we're talking about a real 10 year old or a fictional pokemon trainer in-game that created the myth.

I still have the manual for my copy of Dragon Warrior. Completely intact, good condition. Comes with complete list if items with artwork for each, a full walkthrough for the game including maps, and a prologue story from the Dragonlord's POV in the back.
It's seriously my most treasured retro possession.

When I first played Super Smash Brothers I had never even heard of the Mother series. I thought Ness was some kind of weird Japan only Pokemon trainer kid who had his own weird Pikachu powers because his PK Thunder sounded like "Pikathunder". I also thought he was just some original character made up by the game creators. Pretty silly.
