7092853 No.7092853 [Reply] [Original]

I've got a chink clone HDD adapter connected to an SD card, and for some reason I just can't get this shit working with OPL. It works fine with HDLoader, I can see it in uLaunchELF and format it, but no matter what I do, OPL can't see this fucking thing.

Is there some recommended version of OPL or something?

>> No.7092912

Look, I'm not trying to say that you're a retard.
I've had a modded PS2 with HDLoader since 2006, and I've never even heard of it working with an SD card adapter. Whatever witchcraft they've done to make this work wasn't really that well done.
What I mean is, OPL probably _expects_ to be an HDD in there. A chink adapter won't fool the console like that. The HDD itself isn't a mod, because the console itself accepted HDDs. Mods are stuff like playing through USB or Network.

I don't know if this helps you, but what most likely happened is that OPL doesn't have the drivers for your SD adapter.

This is because you're retarded. It works fine, there's no fucking "witchcraft", and this is a pretty recent innovation. My problem is the cheap chink clone HDD adapter, because the chinks chink'd me and used fake images on the listing. Got my money back, at least, but it's a shame this thing is probably completely worthless.

An IDE drive isn't that complex.

It works fine with HDloader because the last version is from 2007 or something. So of course your chink adapter can fool it.

>A bunch of perfectly compatible hardware, you mean.
Anon. I know you think this is hot stuff, but believe me when I say that some games or software for the PS2 just doesn't know what to do if they're not running from a DVD.
There are a few edge cases, but they're there. For example: Super Robot Wars Impact has problems running in HDloader, but it runs in OPL (albeit with audio problems). Gundam Zeonic Front runs perfectly in HDLoader, but it'll give this bizarre error in OPL, where 99% of the time, no textures will load, except for the main robot. So you'll be playing in a weird void. The buildings are solid, they just don't have textures so you can't see them. Another Century's Episode 3 runs in HDLoader, but it loads every stage for more than a minute, while OPL will hang on specific stages, there's no way around it.

The best case is Tales of the Abyss. Aside from a few specific OPL versions, there's a boss battle at the beginning that'll only load if you're playing from a DVD. You can load it off HDD, USB, Network or your SD Card, it'll never load correctly.

One anon above said something about OPL not having the drivers for your SD adapter. This usually happens with homebrew, and it isn't even that rare. Did you know that, if you load uLaunchelf from anything that isn't a CD/DVD, you can't use a USB Keyboard with any homebrew loaded from it? The drivers are loaded, but I guess they're blocked. Many edge cases.

The weak link is the SD card adapter so the easiest fix is to just order $40 1TB SATA HDD in there and download all the ISOs you want while you wait for it to ship.

There's plenty of "witchcraft". You just don't see/understand it because you're retarded. So retarded you think an SD to IDE adapter is "a pretty recent innovation". I have ones that are nearly 20 years old. Are you even that old? An IDE drive is very complex. It's literally a HDD with the entire controller attached.

>>The weak link is the SD card adapter
No, the weak link is my fucking chink HDD adapter. There's nothing wrong with my SD card adapter.

>>7094920
>Then leave it plugged in fucktard
No. I like my PS2, but I also like putting it away, and I can't be fucked buying another network switch and finding a power socket for it because I already have daisy chained extensions for all the other shit I've got plugged in. You might as well argue about why I'd even bother using a drive, why don't I just SMB the games over my network like a slim peasant!

>An IDE drive is very complex. It's literally a HDD with the entire controller attached.
That's precisely why it ISN'T complex from a software perspective, you dumb cunt. As long as my adapter is properly simulating a generic IDE drive, which isn't hard, it'll be recognized by anything with an IDE port and the appropriate driver set. The only limitation for my SD card is it has to be under 128gb, but I don't really want to have more than 50 games on my console at any one time, look at all the retards who download full romsets and then never play anything because they've got too much choice.

Ps2 games work great over SMB but the Ps1 games either don't work at all or are pretty choppy
I spent a couple hours batch converting and renaming them all to work with Popstarter/OPL and it's dawning on me the "perfect" compatibility is probably sub-20%, versus like 80% which is what the compatibility list suggests. I'll probably blow some time playing Civ II but apart from that I think I wasted an afternoon. I don't know who blew their time retrofitting Popstarter into OPL, it just doesn't work the vast majority of the time.
I know using burned discs is better but I already fried a laser on another PS2 that way lol
This whole scene kind of seems like a mess. Reading the PS2Home forums it's apparent most of these people were insane or at least somewhat petty and a ton of the work was probably left undone. Not to mention the forums themselves are the worst of Web1.0 multi-color text-walls, and the links can only decay from here on.

It's a shame that Sony controls these two massive game libraries and all their future consoles are both ultra-locked down and pretty poorly receptive to backwards compatibility at all.

>> No.7098421

>>7098414
You have to understand that some people who create those compatibility lists are the same kind of fag that comes here and say that "this emulator works 100%", but this 100% is just 100% of the games they know, which is like 10 games. If you look at the PCSX2 or RPCS3 compatibility list, they list as "Playable" stuff that only outputs image and plays at 2fps. And then other people, without ever bothering to counter the "playable" claim, will chime in and say "I've never had any problem with the games I tried", which is usually the same 10 games that "work 100%".

I've had in my mind a project to at least revive PS2/PSP hacking, by means of a project that finally tries to solve the compatibility list problem, and try to update the jurassic software that's still being used nowadays. I'll probably fail, but it's better than doing nothing.

This. Compatibility lists are the fucking worst as it always comes down to idiots on forums saying "works on my machine lol :)", in the specific case of Popstarter it's TERRIBLE. The best thing to do is not bother with it, less than 10% of the library is playable to a respectable standard.

many if not all IDE to SD adapter doesn't follow IDE/ATAPI standards and corruption can occurs. If your OS is aware of it that could be fixed but in embedded systems it's a real PITA. I'm not surprised to see it not working on a PS2. Try a HDD or at least an IDE to CF adapter
