Fuck, nothing really comes to mind. Not because I haven't beaten hard games, but because none of them have really seemed assfuckingly difficult. All of them felt perfectly possible with enough perseverance and the only "difficult" games I haven't beaten like Ghosts'n Goblins or something is just because I would get bored or tired of playing them.
It's been so long since I've found a game hard enough that it felt impossible. I miss that kind of emotion from gaming. It's all just mildly challenging or just a matter of endurance now, which is depressing as all hell

Toki on the Genesis, it was from that era where you had to play on hard mode to complete the game. Toki was ball-bustingly bullshit and likely the hardest game on the platform, the levels were quite long, Toki was quite slow, many enemies had projectile attacks, and it simply wanted you dead. Just saying it's a rite of passage; yes I've played the easier Japanese version as a treat to myself.
As long as I'm here, this is a tip for beating Mike Tyson's in Punch Out: React SLOWER. The game is designed to fool you at the end by ramping up the reaction time necessary to win, but then dips it at the end, so you must dodge Mike's KO punches for 1:30 by reacting slightly slower, not faster.

Yes, but that's when he's gone past the 1:30 mark, so before then, if you dodge exactly when he moves to punch, you will most likely get hit. Instead, stagger your reaction by a half a second so he's halfway towards punching you, giving you plenty of time to dodge and punch him.

The issue most people have with this series is that they try to bum rush it like a Contra with a life bar and it has a much more deliberate pace. Exploiting the enemy spawn rate to cheese items and powerups is essential in all 3 games.

The early Hoth cave levels are where you break the game. It may seem counter intuitive but the spike pits are your friend. Just pick up the hidden lives then suicide yourself before a checkpoint. Rinse and repeat until you have enough for every level.

The hardest part in any of the games is the Cantina fight against the Kalhar Boss. You fuck up that fight the first time and you can pseudo soft lock yourself because it's damn near impossible to win it with the weapon upgrades available after the checkpoint.

Metroid 1 is a strange game. If you played it back in the 90's without a map or guide, it was just SHOCKINGLY difficult. (Please note that I beat it this way.)

I then replayed it in 2016 or so. I used a premade map this time, since (i) I wanted a more casual playthrough, and (ii) I had already beaten it the "real way." Using a map, it's actually a fairly simple, fun, and casual platformer. It's not really very challenging with a map whatsoever.

Ecco is also surprising. Much of the game is quite easy, but the final levels... holy shit. With a lot of spare time and practice, however, I was able to consistently beat it as a kid.

BTW, did anyone else have trouble with Kid Icarus? You don't see that one listed a lot, but it was HARD. More than anything, it's just unbelievably punishing. It's sooooo easy to get hit by an Eggplant Wizard, which just completely fucks you over. The game is SO punitive.

I've heard that a Nethack ascension (a win) is notoriously difficult. Like, I've heard some people have played Nethack for years and haven't ascended.

Even worse, how about 1994's Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM)? I had some friends back in high school in the 90's who were into it. It sounded similar to Nethack, but just INSANELY difficult. Literally, I never played ADOM because the game just sounds so intimidating.

The shit ADOM throws at you just sounds too much to bear. Like, midway through the game you have to beat a place called the Tower of Eternal Flames. You need special flame-resistant equipment, or you take high damage on every step. Since this is a roguelike, none of that equipment is guaranteed!

And it ends with a fifty-story dungeon called the Caverns of Chaos. Inside is essentially radiation ("chaos corruption"), which causes permanent mutations in your character, many of which are bad. If you get too much corruption, you will permadeath and your run is over. There is no way to avoid corruption, and outside of a couple obscure mechanics it's irreversible.

You can finish the game after the Caverns of Chaos... or you can opt for the best ending, to go into another realm and kill a chaos god. To do this, you need to finish a long sidequest with some rare drops. Then, the chaos god is so strong that he can kill you in a couple turns of combat. It's just ludicrous.

Hats off to anyone who has completed an ADOM run, on any ending.

To be fair, I was 15 years old when it came out and had a lot of time to kill. This was a long time ago. I was big into shmups at the time and had quite a few 1CC's under my belt of easier games.

I can also only 1CC the first loop. That means no continues, but I can't do it with no misses (deathless).

I also get nowhere in the second loop, since that's FAR more dependent on memorizing exact patterns, know the PERFECT time to bullet cancel, etc.

>> No.7123105

>>7123089
Continuing...

Getting a 1CC in DDPDOJ took way more practice than any other game on that list.

Like, Battletoads is hard, but the *execution* of button presses isn't that bad once you play it for 10-20 hours. There's a lot of memorization (if you think Turbo Tunnel is bad, you clearly haven't gotten to Volkmire's Inferno or Rat Race). But the frame windows are pretty generous in most places. Though, I'd imagine Clinger Winger may be rough to play on an LCD. Likewise, once you know how to handle the final level and final bosses of Ninja Gaiden 1, it's really not so bad either. Most people fail because they just keep dying and don't try new strategies or THINK about what happened.

But yeah, you easily play DDPDOJ for 100 hours and not 1CC the first loop. The game is tough.

BTW, I have never 1CC'd Radiant Silvergun, especially starting from Level 1 weapons. In my opinion, RS is a far, far, far, far more challenging and punishing game.

How long were you playing Nethack, from start to finish, until you ascended?

It's intimidating to read stories about people who played for a decade and still haven't done it.

If you read Wikis and guides, and really learn the systems, can you reliably ascend? Is it RNG heavy?

Any experience with ToME or ADOM?

Bro, this was like 13 years ago. I downloaded a copy off Usenet and played off my swap-disc-modded PS2.

Beating the first loop isn't even that impressive. My run wasn't even that good. I didn't chain, didn't get a good score, and died several times. I then moved to the second loop and immediately fell on my face.

All the superplays you find are of people doing the second loop with high scores. That's not me.

It's been a long time, and I'm nowhere as good as I used to be.

Anyway, watch some superplays on YouTube. Level 1-4 is where you get filtered if you play conventionally. You'll need to resort to some bullshit tricks like sweeping down, left, and up across the screen, "crossing over" a stream of bullets, and repeating the pattern. If you just stay in the middle and try to dodge normally, it won't work.

Don't sweat it for now. I haven't seriously played shmups in years, but back then I could reliably 1CC most easier ones with a few tries. If you're getting too frustrated, just play some other ones and return to DDPDOJ. That's exactly what I did -- I played it off and on for several months, with many other shmups mixed in.

If you prefer Japanese games you should die right now. I can’t stand how people pretend they know how to read that shit. Knowing what a character means and knowing how to pronounce it, you know, read it ALOUD, are totally different things. TL;DR You’re a larper that can’t read Japanese.

xmen clone wars, won't emu it
never beat it, but it will probably become the hardest for my life
wanted to beat this in co-op with a friend, but moved away, and i refuse to play it otherwise
i'd have to reconnect, and the difficulty setting for that means it'd probably never happen
