that's why you dispatch them ASAP. SSG, run in and point blank shoot them at least 3 times. Can't get inside, rocket launcher from afar, anticipating rushing lost souls. Another good one is to pain lock them with a chaingun or chainsaw. plasma obliterates them but cell ammo is valuable

Protip: Pain Elementals have no melee attack and can't spawn Lost Souls if the player stands right in front of them - you can trap a Pain elemental in a corner and just punch it to death with no risk

They're fucking easy as shit though, you can go right up to them to block their spawns, and they're completely helpless. Try out Doom 64, there the Pain Elemental is actually a genuine menace, and it's great.

Doom 1/2 doesn't place enemies with much thought. If you play custom maps (Or Plutonia at times) you'll know the frustration that is pain elemental in the blackline.
