OP here. GoldenEye came out the same year that I started kindergarten. A few months ago, I asked my parents why I wasn't allowed to play GoldenEye as a kid when they didn't have a problem with me playing the arguably more violent Judge Dredd on the SNES. They said it was because the former game was in first-person, and that it just felt more violent to them from that perspective.

My mom never restricted me from playing certain vidya and the violence never phased me.
The first "violent" game I played was Goldeneye 64 at the age of 6, while the rest growing up were Quake 64, Conker and Jet Force Gemini. Doom 64 and Duke Nukem I mainly watched being played at the neighbor kid's house with his brother, but more often then not we'd play Smash Bros. or Vetorman.

She was a bit TOO lenient though, since she'd also let me rent movies like Friday the 13th and South Park at Blockbuster. The only times I recall feeling uncomfortable from violence in media when I was young were the cement roller scene and the Tempered Sea Bass scene in Austin Powers and Star Troopers as a whole (THANKS DAD!).

Before high school, I was banned from playing any games altogether during the schoolyear, not even on weekends and holidays. Only during vacations I was allowed to play anything, but at least there were no restrictions, unless they saw a game have a negative impact on me. That way, I was forbidden from playing

>Crash Bandicoot
Because they saw me raging and yelling in frustration

>horror games like Resident Evil
Because they caused me nightmares and trouble sleeping

When high school started, all restrictions were lifted and I was allowed to play anything, anytime, since "I wasn't a kid anymore" and they wanted me to take control of my own life and of my own choices and responsibilities.

>> No.7088080

I was like 11 by the time I got to play Goldeneye and none of us thought anything of it at the time. I only became conscious of their being a "thing" about violence in videogames and especially fps games a lot later. And when I thought about it it started to feel a bit weird like - we're killing in a videogame. However on the other hand what about all those toy guns children shoot each other with since they are like 4 years old? I'm not going to say "oh those people trying to stop kids playing violent videogames were all retarded" though because especially back then the games were a totally new thing. But if they're going by that theory then they also shouldn't let kids play with toy guns - again when you think about it a certain way it sounds bizarre we let and encourage little toddlers play with toy guns.

I grew up playing a majority of "classic" 90's/early 2000's games because I'd watch my dad play them first, so barring me from any of those would have been hypocritical. Mortal Kombat was banned when I was a kid. Somehow I was still aware of some of the characters, and thought Raiden was the coolest. Then I grew up, played the games, and found out he fucks up everything he gets involved in. Really disappointing.
I like Street Fighter more, anyway.

I was allowed to play Doom and Wolfenstein 3D for a time as a child, but they were eventually banned (found out years later my older brother could play them when I was asleep). The height of my teenage rebellion was playing the Doom shareware behind my parents' backs.
My parents always hated FPSs, but at least they let me install Jedi Knight. Played the hell out of that.

>>7087608
D&D was out for me, too. I figured it was satanic until I saw a game played when I was 13 and kept wondering, "Where's all the evil stuff they warned me about?"
Parents finally relented years later and even let me run a game at the house. Saw for themselves that it was just my friends and me being dorks.
