What is the best Dragon Quest game not including spin-offs?

In my opinion, 8 is the pinnacle of the jrpg experience. Just classic, simple gameplay, with top notch graphics, ost and involving characters. Also they got the overworld right like few games ever could. I'm a simple man.

It's this. It literally does everything right

Original version, always. I'd recommend the SNES/DS remakes for someome's first time tough.
You pretty much need a CRT to display the game properly. Most Famicom make liberal use of pure blacks and while OLED can display those fine, you'd need brighter contrast as well to give the menu window some depth (maybe HDR or whatever kids these days call it).
Either way CRT+Wii is a cheap way to go, but stay away of the Wii anthology as it's garbage 480i.

If you’re playing on Mesen then there’s a pretty good crt filter that I used for DQI.

GB and DS versions even the Android and IOS versions are good . Shitters here just like to tickle their own bungholes about soul or some other tardation.

Eight is nothing but a disappointment after seven.
VII is the peak of DQ.

I've only played the remake, but from what I've played (haven't played VI), VII was by far my least favorite. Awful pacing, terrible ending and one of the worst job systems I've ever seen in a class based JRPG

This, but OP if you want a /vr/ approved DQ game, 8, and 3 are very fun and are also among the best in the series.

come on with the latest game being the best memery. After the 12 comes out that will be the best, everyone will fap to the female characters in that for a while, then it will go back to 3 or 5 being the best.

9 is the only one I've really liked so far though I haven't played 11. 1 and 2 were okay, 3 seemed pretty good but I got bored and moved onto other things. 4,5 and 6 I've tried various times in various versions over the years and playing them feels like pulling teeth out. 7 was one of the worst games I've tried playing. Skipped 8. Got 9 on a whim and it was weirdly entertaining fun. Decent pace (a rarity for the series) and charming stories along the way. End game is grindy and boring but it was still better than any other DQ I'd played.

That marked the downfall though. That was the first one they got Richard Honeywood to localize. He turns all the characters scottish and cockney and rewrites the scripts to appeal more to 4 year olds.

dq8
i've played every dq but 7

1 is a fun experience but short and simple
2 still needs a rebalance
3 is amazing and the best retro dq
4's translation is atrocious and you have to play the phone version for english party chat
5 is iconic but a linear story-driven dq
6 is average

>> No.7084690

Are the DS versions the best for the classic games? As far as I can see, they are the only ones with animated sprites? Am I wrong in that assumption?

1-3: SNES or GBC. Really because of DQ3 since every version of DQ 1 and 2 are simple with the only difference is less grinding. DQ3 on SNES adds lots of extra stuff like extra classes and a board game and bonus dungeon in the end. GBC has monster medal collecting that adds another dungeon to play out.

4: Less simple. NES is actually really well done and adds a lot of small touches that improves the UI of DQ3. There is a PSX version but moon language only. DS would have been the best version but the localizers completely fucked that over with an annoying accent filled game and removal of party chat. Mobile is the DS with party chat included but heard it feels really rushed.

5: SNES is fine and the PS2 is an interesting version to play as well. But DS is the one to play since it adds a few extra touches including a 3rd wife that is more of a joke character but still a nice touch

6: DS. SNES has a unfinished fan translation. It's playable but DS is fully done.

As for 7 and 8 it's kind of debatable since for both 3DS versions they changed a few things. 7 3DS changed how classes work in ways that I wasn't a fan but they added the tablet radar which for me who played the PSX version it was a godsend. 8 3DS censored some outfits and worse graphically than PS2. Both 3DS versions also came to the west in MIDI format. If you emulate 3DS version there's a orcastrated OST added and put back the outfits in the PS2 version of DQ8.

In short: don't play the garbage localized versions, play the originals.

I agree that XI is the best, but you need to play the earlier games to fully appreciate it. By itself it's only a 8/10.

So I was on par with your posting minus IV-VI but I have the 3DS port of VII and VIII (uncensored and orchestra ost) thanks!
