What are some examples of ports being arguably better than their arcade counterparts? Contra is the famous example but I would also throw in pic related. Different but great art direction, adds more enemies, a super weapon, and most importantly bosses. Only big downside compared to the arcade is using a d-pad instead of a joystick but it works well enough. Thinking about picking up a NES Advantage to try out and see if that works better.

Damn I love this game. I was playing with my flashcart the other day, scrolling through a bunch of roms I'd torrented, and I came across the original FDS version. I didn't even know it was originally a disk game. As much as the soundtrack of the NES version kicks ass, it turns out the original sounds even cooler (and probably a little closer to the arcade game):

It's well worth playing. Never heard of it until a few years back myself. Surprised it is not talked about more. Is Gyruss dare I say.. one of the few left discovered hidden gems? :^)

I think Contra NES vs arcade is kind of a wash, there are aspects of both that I like. Double Dragon 1-3 I prefer the NES versions, except maybe arcade DD1.

Golden Axe on Genesis/MD adds a whole new level but it's kinda half-assed. There are also some level design tweaks I think, arguably an improvement.

Alien Storm totally re-arranges the arcade game, mostly for the better I think. I like the game but sadly the arcade version has some pay2win shit, I think inserting quarters is the only way to recover health... pretty annoying..

While I wouldn't put it above the arcade the Super Hang-On Genesis port is really impressive for an early title plus on top of having all the arcade stages it has a great orginal mode where you upgrade bike as you win races.

Looks like two clowns in colorful pants doing the gay YMCA dance. Whereas the arcade is action movie heroes. And the 3:4 allows cooler environment backgrounds

Arcade v.s. NES Contra seems to be a plebeian filter. The retarded masses prefer an 8-bit gamey "retro" content collectathon session to an immortal almost 16-bit world of kick-ass arcade pacing. Probably similar to the difference between the kids who played jarpigs and scotformera on SNES and transitioned, v.s. the kids who played gritty action games on Genesis and turned out fine.

Hard Corps > Alien Wars
HC: Uprising > Cuphead

The fact that Contra is OP's go-to example just shows what bias there is against arcade culture. Suggests that unless it's a 1:1 but weaker port, they are just going to prefer the console version for the unlimited continues etc

>> No.7085604

Arcade games were made to suck money out of kids. It was never a worthwhile culture and the good games that emerged from that are decent in spite of why they were made not because of it.

You guys are really, really running out of things to be contrarian about. NES game is longer (which is wild because it's still only 20 minutes long), more challenging, and generally more rewarding to finish on a single credit.

arcade version has a lot going for it but somehow the slowdown is ever worse and there's some weird jankiness like your bullets moving upwards mid-flight when the screen scrolls vertically. I really want to know what genius decided the game needed a vertical monitor especially when 20% of the screen is a black status bar. at least in Super Contra it sort of makes sense for the overhead levels.

Not that anyone cares, but the Master System version of The Lost Stars is a lot better than the arcade original. Not only does it manage to look and specially sound a lot better than the arcade (which is quite a feat for any home console port), but it gives you a life bar and a lot more control over your character

The NES verison is easier because you have more time to react.

The two new stages are slower paced emphasizing patience based platforming or pointless button mashing against immobile walls.

Most importaint the arcade one has proper visuals and a rocking soundtrack instead of bleep bloops and tiny pixel men.
