This is the background from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

How does this picture make you feel? what do you experience when watching this background?

It makes me feel like every follow-up to Sonic 1 was just more of the same, or a misguided desire for 3D. And that's why Sonic is dead beyond the autistic fanboy/retro market.

The closest spiritual sucessors are probably the high speed and gorgeous environments of arcade racers.

It makes me feel like I was back in 1997 again being a 7 year old. Grew up poor and I got a Genesis when the 5th gen gaming was out. I loves Sonic so much as a kid. I was the first wave Sonic fan minus the sexual fetish. I liked the Hill Top Zone music too.

Tl;dr nostalgic

i grew up with this stage being the 3rd "legit" (without going to other unfinished levels through sound test) stage. my sonic 2 cartridge was a beta one
the stage had no boss. and just like all the stages in the beta (except emerald hill, which was called "green hill") it had no enemies

good old days~

I always wished some sort of world map existed in Sonic games so I could envision how these worlds were linked together. I used to like to think the mountains in the background of Emerald Hill Zone were where Hill Top Zone was.

It makes me want to turn off the game now that all the momentum from the previous four zones has been brought to a crashing halt. This is the one zone that could be removed completely to zero impact on the game.

For a lot of 2D games with parallax-scrolling detailed backgrounds, especially sonic, I always had a desire to go off the 'beaten path' of the level and explore those parts of the world. I want to see what's happening in those mountains, in the city of pic related. Even if nothing interesting is happening there, I want to see it for all its mundanity. This somewhat translated to 3D games where I'd always be trying to get out of bounds and 'peak behind the curtain'. I especially enjoyed that in WoW

I know what you mean. I've always wanted, like, wallpaper-sized screenies of all the zone backgrounds. That would be badass. There's a lot of little details they put in 'em that you'd never notice with the playable portion of the stage in the way.

>> No.7083086

You know what zoomers are feeling when they try to express their feelings about seeing shit like that? It's called nostalgic regret. They see something that makes them feel nostalgic for a past they never experienced, it happens to a lot of people. You see something that makes you long for the old times because it connects you to some sort of childlike wonder you feel you've lost, only to become doubly sad that you didn't actually experience this particular thing as a child. This triggers some level of ego death and makes you feel lonely/stripped for a confusing reason. I've done studies about this.

I experience a surge of blood flow to my penis.

I pine for the pines, logging to thrust my timber into their hollows. I don't care if I get splinters. The hellish lust inside my brain urges me to get high off that thin mountain air and do unspeakably depraved things while lying naked on the grassy knolls of Hill Top Zone. To masturbate while lying on the flower beds, to grope my genitals high above the clouds, wiping my ass with every leaf of every tree, to ejaculate from the cliffs onto unsuspecting Badniks and innocent woodland creatures down below.

I feel horny.

It makes me feel how well Sonics depiction of civilisation, whether it be the masonic intro of Sonic 1, or the marble ruins, that have SOnic moving from a natural enviroment towards fallen atlantis structures into ultimately a modern setting, contextualises hill top zone as a way of life that is vanishing, the timber gathering industry of the States.

Robotnik is killing that zone by using technology to harvest timber in a more modern way, and he delves deeper into the mystic cave zone, possibly making mine shafts under stone henge like archeological spaces.

Sonic 3 is a getaway, where Robotnik is making a stopgap to space. Initiated in Sonic 2. Sonic is trying to stop him.

And of course, this image reminds me of an earlier time before my enjoyment of art was unobserved, before people insisted on looking at WHO was running through the zone.
