Legend of Kage doesn't have enough material to warrant a 12 minute + 5 minutes of ads long video. It's a solid game but it's a port of a mid-80s arcade game, what do you expect. I'm sure James hasn't even heard of the game before his bosses handed him the script.

Having broken a copy of FF1 on NES at age 11(fucking Ice Cave just wouldn't let up) and the Crash Bandicoot 2 disc at 13, and tossed my share of controllers, U get it completely. As Mike says in some streams, imagine getting a shitty rage-inducing game and it's all you have for a while. Games used to be stupid expensive, $100+ in 2020 dollars.
Most of us didn't get much. Anyway, a notable rage-inducer for me as a kid was Super Star Wars. No saves, no passwords, leaps of faith and rough platforming.

There wasn't even gamefaqs in those days.

James is better at gaming than at movies. He beat the CDI Zelda games, and Street Fighter 2010. Those are no casual feats.
Too many men get into hobbies and careers they don't belong in. It's that whole "you can do anything!" line we were all taught as children and it's shit. A shitload of fuck.
James is also middle-aged. He's like 40 years old now. Time makes fools of us all. He's doing pretty good for himself by having children. That always helps middle and elderly ages.

James is an absolutely terrible player. A casual can brute force their way through one or two hardcore games in their lives, especially if they're making videos about them.

You're right about the "you can do anything" line though. Some of the avgn episodes were great. Maybe not the first ten, but plenty of them before the massive downfall were good. The Michael Jackson genesis episode, that was cool, I had always wondered about that game. The tiger games episode, the wizard of oz. Sure some of it was just the fact he was there first telling us about the games, but he was also good. He only became not good really when he stopped being honest and just talking shit about good games for the sake of it, which is when everything started to fall apart.

No, James actually beat those, and he beat Ghosts n Goblins on NES. That's not just determination at work. Beat Castlevania and Battletoads(with Bootsy's advice) as well.

Also I'd like to mention, Board James is probably the overall best series he ever did. Objectively better than the majority of feature films made post-2000. He needs to stop worrying about making feature films, Hollywood and film are overrated dreck anyway, especially now.
He and Mike and other friends like Justin and Bootsy were far better at content making than your average studio production. What they lacked in $$$ they made up for in SOUL.

What I don't get about this video is that the NES probably has some of the worst games ever made in it's catalogue. It was that particular period of transition from Atari style arcade-esque games to the more modern home console style game that pumped out 100 shitty abortions for every ground breaking classic. And still he manages to pick a game like Legend of Kage that's actually just kind of okay, even by modern standards and with some of it's archaic design choices taken into account. It plays and controls alright. There's just so much worse on the console. Download a full romset and play a random game you've never heard of and it's almost guaranteed to be crap. I was literally excited after I watched the kage episode because james was more interested in it and the observations were good. it was a fine episode and felt less kieran and justin than the others from this season. I come here and no one liked it. I also watched the early ghostbusters games reviews from years ago and I see why people dont like the new AVGN. his demeanor and insight about gaming history isnt there anymore. I still do like this new AVGN and its better than plenty of other guys on youtube. most are wannabees and hipsters while based james and mike are the GOATs. just use less scripts from the screenwave guys and we'll get better episodes.

AVGN became way less appealing after he started putting sponsored ads in all his videos, I doubt he really wants them there but has to pay his bills and support his family. I loved all of his videos while I growing up, it's honestly a huge bummer seeing James this obviously unhappy and pimping X mobile game or Raycons. Hopefully he'll find another creative venture that'll let him escape the cycle that he's put himself in, but I'm not holding my breath.
