I recorded some of these YU-NO MIDIs and wanted to share them with you guys. Composition quality varies, but there are some really well-done ones in here. Check out 'Unraveling', 'Fanky Tang' and 'Movement 2'.

Also, PC-98 music thread. Post Ryu Umemoto, OPNA tunes, etc

nvm, I read the youtube description
>After I'd finished recording, I found an archived link the webpage (now dead) that these tracks came from. It contains info on authors and the intended MIDI module for each track.
These sorts of fan MIDIs were one of the main reasons I bought my own SC-88ST Pro back in the day, more so than for playing games themselves
I don't remember having YU-NO ones but there was a complete ear-copy MIDI set for EVE burst error

It's from Kakyuusei but it's used in YU-NO somewhere, in the extra room or something. On the PC-98 YU-NO soundtrack CD it's titled "Lower Grade Girl 〜下級生〜"

I don't remember what "IrisMidi" is or why it has its own separate category folders like Anime or Game inside it.
S.C.U.G is "Sound Canvas User's Group" I think.
The contents of TEMP seems to be something I pulled out of a game myself (With You) but the text file says "Cut down to normal listening size." and I don't even recall knowing how to do that; must have used some MIDI editor.
With You actually had specific SC-88 (not Pro) MIDI data as an option, might have been the only game I had that was SC-88 rather than just GM or GS/SC-55. (I think maybe the Windows ports of Ys had an SC-88 option?)

Some of the files have WRD files intended for programs that understand them for karaoke-like display, like the Japanese program TMIDI (there seems to be a more recent program called TMIDI that's unrelated)

>>7078054
It's really fantastic, isn't it. I haven't played the game yet, just got the English windows version installed a few days ago. OPNA emulation on PC is extremely good, thankfully. I loaded up the OST on my PC9821Ap, and the only notable difference was harsher treble and background noise on the real thing - though that's probably down to the PC98's amp circuit moreso than the FM chip. Hoot/Neko Project/VGMPlay are really great quality.

Huh I've never heard any of the Gakuen Sodom music but it's pretty interesting hearing an attempt to do metal on a pc98. You can definitely tell it's done by MUSE. It also might be the edgiest game I've ever seen, but interestingly it's also one of the earliest games (as far as I know) that uses a timed dialogue system. I think that one of the things that makes the PC98 such an interesting console is that the game creators always seem to give off an image of being a rebel or punk or whatever, which is why you get a lot of more experimental games than you'd expect from a business computer.
Anyways, a lot of Umemoto has been posted already but I'll share some of my favourites of his that aren't posted as oftne:

>>7085109
One of the things I've noticed with Umemoto's music is that I've never heard arrangements of any of his tracks sound better than those done on with the original FM synth except maybe some of the "unlimited" versions found on his rare tracks collection. The man absolutely mastered the hardware, and composed for it so perfectly that his melodies can't be separated form the hardware without losing something.

People who played YUNO might've missed this track, since it goes unused in the game. It's great:

I second that. The Yu-no remix album is not bad, but the original is way better in every aspect.
The Grounseed soundtrack is awesome too, even if the game itself is mediocre. The shop theme is one epic motherfucker.
Just for trivia, Umemoto also did a few arrangements for the Lakers soundtrack (actually, he worked on the main theme). It really isn't as distinctive as his usual stuff. Its decent, but nothing really stellar.

>> No.7091195

>>7087501
Excellent track, I wonder why it was never included.
>>7089558
Honestly I never seem to like any of Umemoto's work when he isn't composing alongside Hiroyuki Kanno's writing. The reverse is true as well, with Kanno writing being uninteresting without Umemoto's compositions. The quality of both is unmatched when they're working in a duo, unfortunately I think they had a falling out by the end of YU-NO since (according to an interview with Ryu Takami I could barely understand) Umemoto disappeared just before the game's release and forced them to get another composer for a few of the final tracks.
