Since /vr/ has been open, I haven't seen much SNK/Neo Geo discussion outside of the main fighting games. I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread to recommend and discuss some of the lesser known, non-fighting Neo Geo classics.

Over the past week I've been obsessed with Neo Drift Out, which is basically a top down racer where you rush to beat the clock. There's only 6 levels but its a good challenge to try to beat in one continue. I've played a little bit of Over Top, which is another top down racer, but I think the controls are nowhere near as tight as Neo Drift.

What are some of your favorite lesser-known Neo Geo/NGP/NGPC games?

I was a HUGE SNK fan as a child. I wanted to own every single thing by them and wanted to make games for the systems. I still want to do both of those things, actually, but I have yet to learn 68000 ASM. For a short amount of time I had both the AES and the NGCD with games for each.

...Anyway. Favorite lesser-known NG game?

Probably the only thing that bums me out about neogeo was the severe lack of beat em ups. Sengoku 2 and 3 are good(though 3 gets really repetitive) and mutation nation has... a certain charm. But other than that no other gpod beat em ups come to mind.

Sort of sad that such a great arvade system never had that streets 2/tmnt 4 style killer beat em up

>> No.707778

>>707762
That's true, there really weren't that many beat em ups. Something like the D&D games would've been perfect.

I love the Neo Geo, but the CPS2 was much more well-rounded in that regard.

No one bothered to answer this poor soul?

The Neo Geo MVS is a cartridge-based arcade board that was installed in an upright arcade cabinet. There are different versions with varying numbers of cartridge slots.

The Neo Geo AES is functionally the same hardware, but thrown into home console packaging. The home versions of many games were altered slightly, but the AES and MVS are practically identical in terms of the games they can play. The cartridges are different sizes, meaning you have to buy an adapter to play MVS games on an AES or vice versa.

There's also the Neo Geo CD, which received many arcade-perfect ports of MVS games, but it's plagued with horrible loading times.

>> No.707968

>>707945
Also the CDZ, which is a tray-loading 2x version of the NGCD.

>> No.707975

>>707968
The CDZ still has a single-speed drive. It just has a larger cache.

>> No.708073

AES owner here. If you want to play THE GAMES, get an MVS system. Consolized, if you have no plans to put it in a cabinet. MVS carts are LOADS cheaper than AES carts, and you get the major benefit of not being fucked with a small number of credits if you aren't an ace at the game you are playing.

If you dreamed of having a Neo Geo as a kid, get an AES and a Phantom adapter to play MVS carts. This is NOT the cheap route. I burned about $700 on the pair, myself.

>> No.708095

>>708073

You would recommend an AES over a consolized MVS?

>> No.708123

>>708095
Did you even read what I said? You get an MVS to play games without going bankrupt, and you get an AES because reasons.

In the end, it's all personal preference.
