Can we have a thread dedicated to retro games to thrive on cruelty and hyper violence?
Manhunt was once the pinnacle of video game controversy the quintessential game that will turn you into a psycho killer. I found it to be pretty fun back in the day. So let's talk about these kind of games and their place in video game canon.

Manhunt is unironically one of the best horror games of its gen. The whole concept along with the synth soundtrack make it feel like a nightmare out of the 80s.

>> No.7066332

actually tried manhunt for the first time about a month ago, played two levels, it sucks
nice music, nice atmosphere, shitty binary stealth and the entire game seems to consist of sneaking up on people to play a 'brutal' animation (of which there are like, two for each weapon)
i'd like to give it another try, at least get to that pig boss everyone was saying is so creepy

Manhunt is one of the best games rockstar has ever made, the violence was great and all, but the gameplay in general was just fun as hell.
Kratos had some cool kills, they did go the extra mile with Hermes.

carmageddon and postal got some attention in their time..

Three also the game changes into a shoot in certain parts.

>> No.7066351

>>7066332
There are three animations for each weapon and that's a score thing. If you just want to beat the game, a kill is a kill.

>> No.7066360

>>7066343
is the shooting good or is it just vc/sa lockon style?
>>7066351
yeah i get that you have a different animation based on the crosshair color and that it improves your score, but what's the point? does the stealth ever get any better? is the melee combat more fun so i should just charge through the stages smashing everyone with a bat?

>synth soundtrack
Yup great heavy and atmospheric tracks. Like Carpenter but even darker.

>> No.7066364

i'd say the warriors is more brutal than manhunt, although i haven't got far in manhunt
the simple fact you can just grab some woman off the street and beat her head in with a baseball bat feels a bit more 'brutal' than stabbing some masked goon in the neck

It's GTA3 lock-on shooting. It's bad. And I say it as a big fan of this game.

>> No.7066387

>>7066364
Manhunt isn't brutal because of the kills but because of the fact your kills are part of a sick movie production. A movie that makes the producer rich meaning there are many people that will pay for such depravity. As far as acts of killing civilians go GTA games should be considered even more brutal than Manhunt. Manhunt is brutal because of it's farming in it even the police is as much part of the soulless grinder as much as the gangs. Manhunt is just bleak there is no redemption like in the ending of the Warriors you just kill and kill and kill and get away with it to kill another day.

>> No.7066391

>>7066360
Manhunt is a sneaking murder simulator. If you don't like the sneaking or the murder, you probably don't like it. That's fine. Manhunt is an acquired taste be it the content of the game or the gameplay.

>> No.7066401

>>7066387
i guess the framing story is fucked up but the actual content is much less so, so far
>>7066391
the thing is it doesn't even feel like a 'murder simulator', it feels like every other stealth game, just walk behind people and kill them, and even the first tenchu does a better job of that

>> No.7066417

>>7066401
If hands on brutality is the defining thing you look for then you should play Manhunt 2 it's more brutal in it's kills but the framing is much less so going as far as to try to justifying the murdering the protagonist commits

>> No.7066434

>>7066417
not necessarily looking for it but i was really expecting something more, even other games from the time like the punisher are more extreme

>> No.7066452

>>7066434
Punisher is also a great violent game but it lacks the edge Manhunt has. The enemies are hardly as depraved as the pedos and rapists of Manhunt. Like I said it's all about the framing from me. Manhunt has those great reaction from the gang members as they realize you are picking them off one by one or the tough talk when they look for you. It's the small things that make it more dark for me.

shit was so cash

His name is James tho.

if you can get the PC version to run, the TPS parts are MUCH better to play.

Punisher also doesn't have that sweet PS2 headset integration where the game audio comes from your TV, Brian Cox taunts and encourages you to kill directly through your earpiece, and the mic picks up RL noise that can compromise your stealth

>> No.7068502

>>7066360
the second half of the game goes way downhill when they force shooting on you

>> No.7068572

I honestly didn’t enjoy Manhunt, and the exploitative violence aspect is more off-putting than anything. It seems extreme violence is good in a satirical game (Like Postal 2), or maybe a war combat themed game (Soldier of Fortune). When the edgelord takes over and I’m supposed to just focus on unironic brutal killing, like in Manhunt or that Hatred game, it just feels forced and weird.

Good gameplay could save it, but Manhunt just isn’t that great to me. Stealth has been done better.

Well gee anon it's like the whole message of this game is that true meaningless sadistic violence is only enjoyed by the insane. The game literally caused Rockstar employees to take a step backs and ask themselves if they aren't going too far. Main reason why the next game tries to make the hero a victim of experimentation not a devoid of any feelings death row sociopath.

Speaking of which, does anybody have a download link for the gog installer of SoF?

And it gets rather stale after the 10th glass shard to the neck. Rockstar just can't into proper stealth. It's like those missions in GTA San Andreas where you have to avoid detection in a game that doesn't give you the tools to do so. I wanted to like MH and I like parts of it, but it's not great.
