Saturn Quake pushes more polygons than the N64 version. The N64 version had simplified levels and removes tons of level geometry. It also has that "smear vaseline all over your screen" blurriness effect caused by having to use low resolution textures due to the systems low amount of VRAM.

The Saturn also had better ports of DN3D, Powerslave, and Hexen compared to competing consoles. It's weird to think that if the Saturn version of Doom hadn't been such a clusterfuck it would have been the system to pick up if you wanted home console ports of classic PC shooters.

Played a bunch of the N64 versions of first person shooters recently, and was surprised by how actually playable they are, and how much I enjoyed them. The N64 stick makes aiming feel very smooth, while modern analogue sticks tend to feel more twitchy. It's not keyboard and mouse, but it feels good.

The game doesn't even run on the actual Quake engine, every level and asset had to be approximated and run through a new engine because the Saturn couldn't handle anything that wasn't pseudo 2D. The fucking weapon model isn't even 3D, it's a 2D Sprite unlike every other version of the game. The levels are significantly scaled back, even compared to the N64 version. The only "good" thing about the Saturn version is the dynamic lighting effects caused by weapon fire. In every other way the game is inferior to all other versions and isn't worth playijg.

Okay, now this is a laugh riot. I like how you even used the de facto "vaseline" argument because you're never actually played the game. Fun fact: Hexen 64 is actually one of the few N64 games that gives you the option to turn off the "vaseline filter" in the options menu, so that argument doesn't work. Now putting aside the fact that Hexen on Saturn looks like complete garbage, runs at 8fps, is missing huge level segments and has no multiplayer, this version couldn't even manage to pull off fucking directional sprites for enemies -- that is, enemy sprites will always face you no matter what way you turn. This isn't even accounting for the huge graphical issues and bugs this version has. If you have somehow convinced yourself that Saturn Hexen is better than the N64 version, you are literally brain damaged.

The Saturn has two good shooters: Powerslave and Duke 3D. But the id shooters are notoriously bad and none are better than their N64 or PS1 counterparts.

There used to be a wicked video on youtube comparing e1m1 on both systems and it did a good job at showing how poor a job the n64 port did at textures and polygons at points. Not saying that saturn port is the best because it really isn't but it shows how much attention was put into it compared to the n64 version.

The EX-Flies too. But as you said it, lots of care went in, especially in the technical side of things. They fitted even *most* cinematics in a 64mb cartdrige.

Had they put Duke64 on a similair cart, they would have had space for all the levels (Ep. 4 too) all the soundtrack, the Build editor and 3 to 4MB to spare for custom maps.
