Since it's almost 2021, I decided that now is a good time to get a Dreamcast ODE. I originally set out to find a Saturn ODE, but I couldn't find any on AliExpress. Instead, I could find countless GDEMU (Dreamcast ODE) clones, so I decided that I'll get one of those (pic related: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mOScejX).). I'm a bit more familiar with the Dreamcast's library anyway.

Does anyone here know if
*FAT32 is better for 128 GB SD cards (the max. supported size as far as I can tell) or can I use exFAT?
*the official GDEMU firmware will brick this Ali clone? I've heard of other official flashcart firmwares bricking clones.

Thanks.

Dont update the FW. the update is to make the code veronica x english patch work properly. Youre gonna need to boot a normal CDI and cd reader for that one. max size is 400 gig sandisk microsd. FAT32 is the way.

Is the chink everdrive n8 any good? Mainly for expansion audio and the good Nintendo games.

Just picked up a MODE for my Saturn, I fucking love it. Replaying Tomb Raider and realizing how much I still suck at Sega Rally.

One thing I will say about ODEs, is only throw the games onto it that you actually want to play. Don't be some sort of hyperautist who has to have an entire redump set filled with shit you'll never touch, it'll just increase choice paralysis and make it take longer to scroll through your game list.

The Saturn is limited in how fast it can pull info from the bus itself, so an ODE doesn't reduce loadtimes as much as it could (although it does reduce them by virtue of having 0 seektimes). For the Dreamcast I'd recommend a GDEMU over a MODE solely because while MODE loads games slower to maintain compatibility and stability the GDEMU loads games as quickly as it can. The increased data transfer speed is only an issue in a couple of games so it's worth the reduced loadtimes for the rest of the library.

OP here. I'm getting that GDEMU soon and I'm also considering a Fenrir for my Model 1 Saturn with a fucked laser. But before I decide on that, does anyone know if there's any games on this list worth playing that require in-game disc swapping? It's not supported by Fenrir. It's only a handful of games, but I want to be sure. Thanks.

for the fenrir I believe it's nothing that can't be completed without rebooting the system and loading up the second disc instead.

As a followup, I just found out that MODE actually lets you set the disc read speed when installed in a Dreamcast, which means you have a number of options between as quickly as possible (lower loadtimes) and as close to stock as possible (100% compatibility).

>>7067405
Most games let you save at the end of disc one, then switch discs and load at the beginning of disc 2, but some don't. Realistically it's not an issue if you're only playing NA/PAL games.

Getting a fenrir is fine. You can't play Bug! but who gives a shit. If you're super hard up for a 90s 2.5d platformer there is always Pandemonium (or just get a PS1 and play the Tomba games and/or Klonoa).

I usually like to put them into folders such as shooters, platform, fight, racing, its makes choosing easier but somtimes you can get surprised looking for random games. I tried this game called Hudson Hawk on gameboy because its a wierd name and its pretty good.

Considering how many JP-only games there are for it, it might still be a significant issue.

>You can't play Bug! but who gives a shit.
Yeah, that's a shame. Hopefully they can fix that with a firmware update or something.

I imagine they will, that's the end goal of course. There's been some really good features added lately, like backing up save RAM to the sd card and hopefully in the future, sd card to RAM.

Xstation is also incredible and very polished.

You could probably manually format a larger disk with the right sector sizes (allocation), though you'll likely get poor performance in some of the menus and a longer boot time generally. We really need chain loaders for these.
