I have to say I was really surprised that Cloud and his crew were bioterrorists when playing FF7 for the first time.
Seeing him as a poster boy for JRPGs for so many years gave me the impression he was a common heart of gold character.

There's nothing morally dubious aboin Caim. He's completely gone off the deep end. The only thing in his mind is murder. Even the elder dragon that hates humans is appalled by how many people Caim ends up killing. A more apt moniker for Caim would be a villain protagonist.

I agree - did Samus go back to zebes to save the metroid, or was it just to chase what would be the bounty on Ridley's head? Mother Brain pretty much calls her out with the golden statue.

He at least has a sister he wants to protect and has shown.... affection towards the Angelus
And he just so happens to be on the side that's trying to save the world
There's no other side that could be considered better than his team to make them the bad guys

For me it's Kefka – intelligent, nihilistic and with a wicked sense of humor.

Caim is incredibly bloodthirsty, but he's also genuinely the hero of the story. He would be a villain in many other settings, but the world of Drakengard is so awful that a relentless killing machine is actually more morally upstanding than practically everyone else in the game.
