One thing I didn't like is Nintendo took the simplicity of this sprite and interpreted it literally to create his Smash model. His unfazed, emotionless expression only works with the lack of detail on the NES.

Capcom draws Mega Man as a humanized character who can emote so Nintendo missed the ball on that.

MM is already made of 8-9 sprites (depending on the frame) and already uses 2 palette slots out of 4.

That means that there is a palette slot that is ONLY used for MM's face and the Robot Master's faces for the entire game and they're stuck with the remaining 3 palette slots for everything.

In short, they already did some sacrifices to make him look more detailed. They weren't the first to sacrifice a palette to make the protag more detailed but it was exactly a standard to do so yet.

Not really. You can't tell he has anime eyes on a standard CRT, especially not a small one. There are no outlines to his eyes. This caused problems for the Mega Man 2 coverart guy, too, who thought they were a visor. The line mouth doesn't look like his artwork, either. The fact that he's called Man, not Boy, isn't helpful for initial perception, either.
