best """retro""" gta is San Andreas for the sheer amount of stuff you can do in it.
second is probably vice city stories, what an amazing game. only played it on PS2, though.

Still my favorite. Liberty City is nice and compact, and the original release lacked a map in-game which forced you to get good at driving and navigating.

I remember back in the day hooking up my PS2 to my Sony HomeTheater and playin GTA Vice City with DTS turn on. Sound was 4.0 but I could still hear the cops chasing me in the surround speakers.Had to wait 'tll GTAIV to play with DTS again.

Speaking of which... I would like to mention the Miami Vice easter eggs, they're all over the place in this game. Some cars, some pedestrians, some locations, even the yacht from the cover art is taken straight from the series. I love how Vice City managed to be a better Miami Vice game than the actual licensed one

>> No.7057867

>>7057473
The PS2 version is pretty far from definitive. That framerate, resolution, ped/car count and draw distance sucked ass even then. I was there, I remember it sucking. At least go Xbox if you want muh console/CRT comfy.

>> No.7057869

>>7057473
Also these games supported widescreen natively, in the normie options. Kinda shittily, but I don't know what you're deriding it.

>just patch and patch and patch and patch

This is one of those cases of the mod metagame taking away from enjoying the real one. See: Silent Hill 2. I've done this shit, and did it with VC and SH2, but it still sucks and I imagine less computer patient people will never bother or do it properly. There needs to be a site for hosting justwerx pre-modded games in case one just doesn't wanna hassle.

>> No.7057881

>>7057867
GTA VC and San Andreas are both native PS2 games. Ports run fine, but the graphical effects were drastically changed (mostly just cutting effects) for the ports. PS2 is ironically the best looking version of both, though it is sluggish as hell.
As for thread, VC is the only GTA game I could ever be assed to beat, so it is definitely the best one.

>> No.7057889

>>7057881
and as he posted, you can get all of those effects back, though it's a bit of a pain in the butt as I also said. Also, yes, PS2 VC and SA have some exclusive post processing and shading but it's not thaaaAAAAat fucking integral to the experience. When I got the PC version of VC back in the day I was just so floored with how much sharper it was and how much faster it ran that I didn't notice the post processing til I played the PS2 version again.

>> No.7057893

>>7057889
I played a bit of a pirated version of VC on PC back in the day. The faster gameplay and clearer visuals were definitely noticeable, yes. However, the game felt "empty" compared to the console version and I couldn't put my finger on why.

>> No.7057908

Saint's Row 2 is the best GTA, though if you want retro, Mercenaries is good.

>> No.7057909

>>7057893
Yeah, does suck that they kinda cheaped out on delivering a lot of the post processing but I was dumb enough not to care at the time anyway. If I recall, the Xbox version had a lot of the effects intact, or at least enough of its own to look more soulful than PC, and San Andreas retained more of its look on all platforms, probably due to taking advantage of better hardware/API features at the time.

>They still haven't topped this story
SA is my favorite and the story is a mess, mainly due to have many changes they made, like making Ryder team up with Smoke because Ryder's VA got into a pay dispute with Rockstar

That framerate was straight busta. I'd argue that PS2 wasn't even the lead platform for that one.

I've always associated the GTA 3D trilogy with the PS2, so playing them on Xbox just wouldn't feel right. Plus the Xbox versions have changes to the lighting and skybox which I am not a fan of.

You prefer the generic pissfilter that you fags spent the entirety of gen 7 complaining about?

>> No.7058292

>>7057893
The vanilla PC port is pretty bad. Missing lots of visual effects, namely headlight effects. The leaves that scatter the ground are textures recycled from GTA III so they aren’t even palm leaves like they’re supposed to be. NPC dialogue and dialogue from Tommy basically doesn’t work compared to how it’s originally supposed to be. It’s a rushed port and only worth looking at if you’re interested in modding some of this stuff back in.

>> No.7058754

>>7058012
I don't care, man. The warm, smoggy atmosphere is what I first think of when I boot up San Andreas. That and I think the lighting on Xbox just highlights how ugly the textures are up close. The PS2 does a better job masking this.

>> No.7058948

it varies from city to city and depending on weather and other conditions. it's really only pissfilter in LS on certain days.

>> No.7058981

The attempts at modding those effects back in are absolutely not comparable to the original release.
