Can you name some retro games that aren't violent, no specific reason why I made this thread other than curiosity.

Good pick since that's rare for the genre. I wonder if there are any nonviolent platformers (besides puzzle-platformers) or RPGs

Can you elaborate on the definition of violence? There's a lot of murder happening in seemingly innocuous games like Mario, but few consider them violent without delving into needlessly indepth analysis.

Out to Lunch is a nonviolent platformer where you capture living food items. The end goal is kind of violent though, further muddying the waters of OP's question.

Moon RPG thrives on the concept. Be warned though the original PS1 release is japanese only. The recent Switch port has an English translation.
In any case, get the walkthrough from GameFAQs, it's one of those games.

Most retro games aren't violent. I mean would you consider Contra or Castlevania violent games?

If I understand correctly you mean games where no characters kill, defeat, or destroy other characters by stomping, shooting, slashing or hitting them etc. Most retro games where these things did occur were very benign, fantastical and cartoony though. The earliest game I can think of that could be considered violent is the arcade game "Death Race" from 1976, and the earliest notable video game that could be considered violent by modern standards would be Wolfenstein 3D from 1992. But between those two dates even the retro games where the entire object is to shoot things could hardly be categorized as violent. Asteroids, Space Invaders and Galaga are about the least violent games I could think of for instance.

But I think your qualifications isn't how gory or bloody the game is, but if it even contains destruction in its most banal form. (like: ship shoot asteroid, alien, other ship) So maybe the question could better be framed as retro games that involve no destruction by one object to that of another.

By your markers Dig Dug is pretty violent, I mean you inflate enemies until they pop like balloons. Same with Pac-Man, devouring the ghosts.

I think you're basically asking for puzzle games, because most other retro game genres I can think of involve some sort of entity destroying another entity. I guess "Carnival" isn't violent because you're just playing a carnival game, right? But even racing games would be violent by this definition, when you crash in Pole Position that could be considered violent if shooting an alien in Space Invaders would be.
