Before the game even starts Crono, Marle, and Lucca (the same people who defeated Lavos) get killed offscreen by random soldiers from the "Kingdom of Porre". Yeah. That's some pretty shitty writing right there. Why couldn't they just give us Chrono Trigger 2 instead?

It's actually shitty writing because it's irrelevant. The status of Crono Lucca Marle and Guardia as a whole has no impact at all on Cross's story. Cross is entirely based on the consequences of the events of Trigger, not any "where are they now?" bullshit. The game is a plot structure mess.

chrono trigger is objectively one of the best jrpg's on the snes. you literally can not truthfully say it's not in the top 5.
i'm convinced cross originally wasn't supposed to be a sequel to trigger at all, but i don't know the history behind the game.
