I never liked the 3-button pad d-pad, the 6-button one is much better.
That said, between these 2, I prefer SNES.
SNES and Saturn are my 2 favorite d-pads ever, each with their own strength. Saturn's d-pad is like an improvement upon MD Model 2's.
SNES d-pad is just the classic cross shaped d-pad, can't beat the classic.

Short cord Genesis d-pad is one of the worst fucking d-pads ever made. So stiff and sharp. On the other hand the later long cord Genesis d-pad is one of the best ever made.

SNES's d-pad's great too but seems to wear out after years of Street Fighter II/Mortal Kombat abuse, but I prefer its button layout too.

SNES d-pads are really mushy and these days even the PCBs aren't holding up. 3-button genesis d-pads came in a ton of variations but they're all generally good with a clean travel and deliberate sense of input the SNES lacks.

Not sure why anyone actually likes the SNES d-pad.

>> No.7036471

>>7036449
a lot of people don't realize this, but the Genesis came out a while before the SNES. the Genesis was a reaction to the dominance of the NES. This is why it only had 3 buttons. This is also why it had such a shitty sound chip. Sega thought they were doing good with the system.

The SNES came out 2 years after the Genesis. hence the much larger color palette, fantastic sound chip, 6 button controller, and so on. IIRC, the SNES is a vastly superior system, but they kind of had an unfair advantage

>> No.7036486

>>7036471
Nintendo cheaped out when it came to the SNES. If they had actually made something powerful for 1990, they would have completely blown SEGA out of the water and would have prevented Sony from entering the industry.

>> No.7036515

>>7036471
Sony's ASIC audio chip was actually the most impressive part of the SNES. As hard as Nintendo fans like to praise the SNES CPU, nobody was familiar with it. Almost everyone in the industry had worked with the 68k though. The only mistake Sega made was not adding an Oki ADPCM chip in there in addition to the YM2616.

>> No.7036535

There are 3-Button controllers that have amazing D-Pads. They're just extremely uncommon and you'd have to have the controller in your hand to know whether or not it had it. Like so many things with Sega. You can't tell by pictures alone.
