The maps are too faithful to the original, which honestly sucks since Gaiden's maps are really dull. It's a damn shame since the presentation and music is honestly beautiful. If the gameplay was as good as the presentation it would easily be the best game, no question.

It's good if you just want an anime rpg game, as a FE game though the modern troupes like the self insert mc and light dating sim elements make it feel weird for veteran fans though. Difficulty is also weird, hard mode is piss easy while maddening is a pain in the ass unless you know what the best units, classes, and skills are.

If my moves aren't perfect they always kill a town or take my dudes. Or one guy gets too much gold. Then once I thought I was making progress I found out that I had missed a romance subplot.

Prior to concluding the simple explanation that I am overly retarded to grasp GOTHW, I wanted to exhaust other possibilities.

The game literally let's you save every turn and gives you multiple turn save slots, they basically are begging you to abuse rng in FE4.

The trick to FE4 is just never use foot units, ever. FE4 is pretty well known for having some of the worst unit balance in the series since you either have a mount, or you're dead weight and have no use.

Play the one just called "Fire Emblem" on GBA. It was the first one released in the west and is a pretty nice balanced intro to the series.
After that, play whatever you want. Make sure to play the Tellius series in order, PoR - > RD
Awakening and the Corrin trilogy are very different from the rest of the series. Pair Up and grinding kind of break the tactical side.

As >>7035915 said FE7, localized as just "Fire Emblem" outside of Japan, is a pretty typical starting entry and was made with the idea of it being westerners first FE game in mind, they even have a baby tier tutorial mode for new players.

It's a solid entry with pretty solid map designs and a fun enough cast. Do note that the plot is absolutely pants on head retarded as fuck but it's not a huge deal.

Fire Emblem 8, or Sacred Stones, is also a nice entry point. It's really short and piss easy, perfect game for picking up the series as its hard to serious fuck up in it.

It's pretty damn good, though mechanics like fatigue and capturing units aren't for everyone. Map design is fantastic though and I would even say it has some of the stronger writing and plot in the series.

It's really good, map design is probably the best in the entire series (I haven't played the games past Awakening though). The plot and writing are fine.
However you have to get used to the new mechanics, if you play it like a regular FE you're probably gonna get raped. Capturing is fun, you can get a fuckton of cool weapons and staves basically for free, which is what I enjoyed the most about the game. Fatigue may sound annoying but you can use potions to reset it, never really bothered me.
