The 2006 game, not the new game with the same name, is an incredibly unique sci-fi shooter with native american mysticism and puzzles so much better than Half-Life 2. Why is this game so obscure? It's excellent i recommend fans of FPS games to play it.

Not a zoomer this game never gets mentioned anywhere.

I liked it but you can't die. Just like bioshock. Where's the fun in that? You never have to think about any encounter and can brute force everything.

Nigger people were literally seething at Prey 2017 being shitty SS clone instead of the galactic bounty hunter sequel to the 2006 game. You're just a normalfag if you don't think this game has been discussed before.

The environment, setting, puzzles and lore make up for it. You cant die in Half-Life 2 either, you just savescum until you beat a difficult area.

It sold over a million copies moron.

It's not sold on any modern digital platforms, such as steam or gog, unlike Doom 3 and Quake 4.

Why is that?

at least the game gives you something to do before spitting you back out into the map

and to answer your question, OP:
Prey has mostly been forgotten by the annals of gaming history because it was a game that lived in development hell for a long time and it ended up with a poorly timed release (it sat across from titles like Gears of War, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, and Dead Rising)

I love Prey, but it’s a obviously a love-letter to Quake-era shooters and that simply didn’t fly in 2006. Frankly, it still doesn’t fly 14 years later

wrong. It's hidden gem status now

I cant think of a single modern FPS game, using current graphical technology, that is not a COD clone or overly complicated experience.

I want a Quake-style shooter with modern graphics!

Prey was one of the last of its generation of great single player FPS games.

okay, ignoring that the shooting and AI and level design are really mediocre,
>and puzzles so much better than Half-Life 2
what a laugh m8 literally just toggle your spirit walk whenever you meet a dead end & that's it. HL2 had easy puzzles as well but at least they had multiple solutions and were fun to execute.

>>7028820
if your brain is to fogged to bother learning new mechanics then buddy that's a *you* problem. although even games like Prey 2017 you can ignore most of the gimmicks and play it like a normal shooter and have a blast.

>> No.7029881

I remember playing the demo that goes through the diner at the start and a shorthand version of the first level in the space ship and being blown away. Then I got the actual game and found out the demo was the best part.

Also the vehicle mechanics were awful even compared to Half Life 2. Especially coming from Halo and Halo 2.

Still I give it some credit for the Coast to Coast segment and atmosphere in the beginning.

Played it recently on Steam (yes you can still buy a key if you look for a bit), it's basically a 6 hour long Doom 3 mod, very linear and completely unremarkable.

SMGs aren't even viable. An elite will kill you in just under two seconds. It takes far longer than two seconds to drop an elite's shields before you can swap to a hard ping weapon with an SMG, even dual SMGs. It's a fundamentally broken game, and is the only one in the series that sticks out like that.

I enjoyed it quite a lot, must have probably finished it 2 or 3 times. But frankly, after Q4 and D3 the fucking engine had to be scrapped. I really doubt I was the only one tired of Carmacks plastic-looking shit by 2006.
Besides the graphics, it still wasn't that creative to be honest. It felt like it borrowed way too many designs and ideas from other games and didn't stand out at all, even with the supposed native American thing. Might had been due to dev hell though.

I'm more confused by why this game never gets any attention. It's filled with a lot diverse, but enjoyable content, great melee combat, nice lighting effects and graphics that still hold up well today, and a high immersion factor. Yet no one ever talks about it.
