See that thing on the left? Yeah. Thought it was a Black Belt design, but more likely Dreamcast since it was 4 player from concept. You know, because Nintendo did it first.

decided to dig up some info on this console. apparently nintendo decided not to release it because the game boy advance was selling so well at the time, but they did give devkits to a select few gaming manufactures, Rare being one of them. Shit if someone can dig up what Rare was making for this console that would be kino

>If Nintendo released that thing in 1996, Sony would be no more and we'd all be enjoying great games and Michael Jackson would still be alive.
>So basically, fuck Nintendo for being stubborn pricks.

Oh man, that Michael Jackson theory. It's interesting that the SGi group (MIPPS?) approached Sega first with some prototype N64 hardware. Tom kalinske said SOA were interested in what they saw and brought over engineers from SOJ. But SOJ turned down the hardware, probably because they had the Saturn in the works, and SGi ended up at Nintendo. They were interested in getting into 3D gaming, so SGi showing up with a prototype got their attention. Of course they had a big success with Donkey Kong Country, which were rendered on SGi Onyx machines. The DKC series really popularised the use of SGi workstations in the game industry. So Nintendo having MIPPS show up with a prototype that was originally meant for Sega (they said the original prototype used a Sega Saturn gamepad), Nintendo were probably all in. Though, I do have a feeling that MIPPs hardware may worked better with non-optical media. But Nintendo didn't want to pay Sony any royalties for using CD-ROM patents. That may have played into it too. The Nintendo disc drives were developed by Panasonic.

I'd love to know if they ever saved money with this shit compared to just paying the royalties.
I'd wager a guess that says no and they always knew they'd lose money on this but they just hated Sony so god damn much that they stuck with this strategy for three entire consoles.

They might have been using the Reality Co_processor with a different hardware configuration. That video was from 1994 (apparently) and Nintendo didn't have their hardware finalised until 1995-1996. Nintendo had to cut corners on the system to reduce the price to $199.99US price tag.
