I always heard about old rpg`s on the ps1 era, but I never got around to playing them (Poorfag) So recently I went on with xenogears, I had stopped at first just at the start due to university and personal stuff, but then I remembered and went back.

I gotta say Im surprized at the game for most of its content, althought Disc 2 is lacking in some big stuff, but still, I cant help but say its become one of my favs of all the game`s I`ve played and many could learn from its ways

So, what do you think?

Im gonna make someone paint that crap on my room wall sometime soon, its so fucking awesome.

Great game with a great staff. With enough quality fans to pump out great artwork.

>> No.702564

Well, I enjoyed xenogears, but it tried to cover way too many topics and then them losing their funding for disc 2 didn't help either. Chair sim 2012 wasn't all that enjoyable. What it did manage to discuss in full was pretty great.

the soylent green thing in the factory was a bit ham though. I can't help but feel it was meant to be a joke but somewhere in translation it got turned into serious.

I can only imagine what was supposed to be. episodes 1&2 could have been great games.

If you haven't read it, or at least skimmed through it, perfect works is definitely worth looking for. It really goes into detail where they couldn't in the game.

Awesome game. The only people who hate on it hate on it for the wrong reasons.

Complaining that it was rushed as fuck and literally 1/3rd of the game is incomplete is valid

But most people just trash on it because they're embarassed they thought things were awesome when they were kids, and think the secret to being cool and adult is acting like you don't give a shit about anything. PFF LOOK AT ME TURNING MY NOSE UP AT THIS PRETENTIOUS BULLSHIT LOL YOU KILL GOD JAPAN IS SUCH SHIT

Better a bunch of crazy over the top mysticism and "pretentiousness" than the same tepid warmed-over lowest common denominator crap we've got out of videogames for the last 10 years.

- Loved the story
- hated some Mecha fights because I remember some being very hard and "unfair"
- loved the regular combat more than the mechas
- story was fucked up but so good
- Hated the fucking last dungeon...seriously, I forced myself to finish that shit. I recall the final boss also being difficult
- 2nd disc was weird yeah, def. ran out of time and money but whatever.
- story had some heavy stuff...fuck...
- amazing music
- I actually liked the Prison parts

Oh and when I bought this pirated once in Turkey, it had only 1 Disc and it crashed during the first 2 hours... gave it back and got something else instead.

For those of you who wish Disc 2 was expanded, consider for a moment that a lot of its content maybe did not really need an exploratory aspect and, inversely, Disc 1 had some needlessly drawn-out parts.

For example, Kislev. Though it's a colorful segment, it's more like a random assortment of things happening than it is a coherent plot. Id manifests, Fei is pushed into fighting against his wishes, Elly is conflicted, Rico's arc comes and goes, and the Gazel talk about wacky things. A lot of it just feels like superfluous information and development that is better exemplified elsewhere in the game.

On the other hand, in Disc 2, would having to play through all the Soylent Systems be all that fun? I'd liked to have had one (i.e. the "main" one), but remember that we already got a similar experience in Solaris. More Anima dungeons probably would have gotten repetitive too.

Plus, other segments just don't really seem playable, like Elly taking care of mutated people in Nisan. They would have had to make drastically different versions of all the populated areas of the game to reflect different stages of Deus' "assembly". Being able to play as Regurus for a bit would have been cool I guess, especially since they did make the battling model and everything.

Overall, I'd maybe liked to have had a Mass Driver facility, one Soylent System, the Eldridge dungeon (though Babel is sort of this already) and maybe some more towns or something on the hidden continents, but it's not as big of a deal as it seems. Oh, and playable Ramsus or at least Dominia would have been a nice bonus considering they already had most of the assets they'd need (on-foot and gear battle animations) and the story hinted at this anyway. Instead, we got MORE KISLEV GEAR BATTLING OPTIONS WOW!!!

The last time I played, I made sure to make a savestate on the world map just before going to Solaris, since this is the last time you can explore all the game's areas. One of the things I never did in this game in the ~10 times I've played it is seeing what all the townspeople say at this point in the game.

So far, in Bledavik and Nisan, it's mostly dialogue reacting to Bart's succession to the throne. This poor woman has a tragically optimistic view of the current state of the world. Also, for some reason, at this point in the game, Nisan has this theme playing at 2x speed instead of its normal track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6V9UiO9X_4

Something that I find weird is the fact that if you fly around you can't seem to find Solaris, which I think should be around the center of the map where the path from all the Gates intersect. I understand why all the other continents don't appear yet (I think they are hidden by the Gate still in Solaris) but there is a small part after you destroy the 3rd Gate where Solaris actually appears in the sky, so it's not like they didn't have the graphic. Kind of a weird thing to get rustled over, I know, but otherwise their detail on the map is very good, like the land being ripped apart from the destruction of the Gates. The lighthouse is already on the map and you can even go to the first screen in it, but entrance is blocked otherwise.

Thats a nice insight you made, I have a save state of the very start of the second disk, my file got corrupted, so I had to rely on them to keep playing or else I`d have to start all over, If I do a second playtrough I`d try and notice more details as I can, including what you said.

Also did anyone find the deathblow learning quite odd? I got all the deathblos for fei and mostly for citan but aside from theirs all the others had almost none, kinda wished it was easier to get them.

I have another new file saved a bit before the Stalactite Cavern, where I'm trying to gauge the "pulse" of each town by talking to literally everyone as the game progresses. It's a bit obsessive, but this game is a huge part of who I am. In Dazil and Lahan, you can get a cool feel for gear excavation and the fact that tons of people moved there to cash in. It makes me wish you could explore a couple excavation sites like the one that's shown in a sepia-toned screenshot when you're talking to Maison in the Pirates' Hideout.

Yes, Deathblow learning is quite weird since it makes you think you should be practicing the exact combos for most of the game, but later on you can't get some of the deathblows this way. I didn't find out until much later that you can learn them more efficiently by evenly distributing your unique button-presses (4 for triangle, 2 for square, 1 for X). If you grind really hard early, you can see a nice easter egg -- the Deathblow that Fei used on Calamity, Kishin (Infinity X, but it looks different as Xenogears, so it's hard to tell). It's funny how most people have probably never seen half the gear combos in the game, since there's 12 for each character, there's little incentive to get the higher ones for some characters, and 3 you can only use by equipping Deathblower1/2/3.

I'll try to post more of the best fan-art in my posts rather than my oddly stretched-out screenshots.

Weird unexplained thing #95310: Each gear has a hidden weight capacity and every gear equip has weight. If you overload a gear, they lose agility.

It is detailed in this FAQ, along with other odd parameters that are never shown, such as the elemental attributes of different deathblows (gear deathblows have them too, mostly infinities).

I played through the first one when it came out, but never played the 2nd and 3rd games. Recently, I downloaded the undubbed version of the first game and found I'd forgotten everything about the game. It's fun, but eh... I've played Xenogears so many times that Xenosaga's ideas all tend to sound like repetition of old images and themes, just shuffled around. Like Cherenkov is a little bit Fei, a little bit Ramsus, bits and pieces of other things, etc. I still want to finish it all some day, but I had to take a break.

I'm glad my random musings are interesting. At one point, I tried to start a wiki that was written from the point of view from a "historian" sort of where it would list all the minute details about the world and its people, including random things gleaned from the most insignificant townsfolk and the environment, plus interpreting all the random unused lore in Perfect Works to assimilate a detailed map.

I started playing through the game again and taking a few notes here and there as well as screenshots, but I got lazy and ended up just playing the game, and I never tried to drum up support from other diehards.

My dream is that one day, people can compile an encyclopedia like this and use it as a basis for an expanded Xenogears that tries to be as faithful as possible in creating more of the world. If at all possible, it would probably be done as a 2D game, but it'd still be a ton of work.

Well that sounds like a nice idea to be honest at least I`d check it, and I`d offer to help on that if I had more spare time on my hands, but its kinda hard thanks to working and studying.

Maybe someone in some point might create something like the chrono ressurection program of sorts? but explaining details, on a more interactive way, without it being a game on its own.

Also, how do you think the last episode would have been? Seems like you got more imagination for that than I do

It would also show the demise of the cosmos as described by Takahashi in Xenosaga interviews. Beyond this, the third and final arc is an enigma.

>At the very least Emeralda should get more development in this arc, since Perfect Works hints that she is still important to humanity's future, and if you imagine a future where nanotechnology as sophisticated as Emeralda can be utilized to shape the universe into anything, then the philosophical question becomes; what shape should the universe be molded into?

Source: http://xenoverse.xenotensei.com/story/part3/anger.htm

I'm not really sure if it would have been best to follow Fei again, or a survivor from the apocalypse who observes them, or have it be set many years in the future when mankind has rebuilt some and there are no more Contacts/Antitypes. It seems to suggest that the end of the series wouldn't have been pretty, but I can't imagine what the villainy would have been like. Perhaps mankind would thrive, then continue the path of destruction that was started by Zeboim by reviving its technology, since so much of it was rediscovered in Xenogears.

I think it would have emeralda going from that point developing more humanity on herself, emotions and such.

Probably fei wouldn`t be on the main action, but rather more a secondary character in support and key as well to the whole story trough his past and discover more of his past life as kim when creating emeralda.

Hi fellow anons,

I never managed to "start" Xenogears. I know "it's a masterpiece" and I'll "love it to death", but I just can't. I tried it and got bored right after the forest at the beginning (slow start I guess).

Then there's the fact that the US translation seems to have censored/dumbed down some philosophical/religious concepts from the japanese script which is a bit putting off (and apart the undub version, there's no retranslation around...).

I don't know, the game felt "empty" and I'm afraid of giving 80 hours of my life to an "empty game", waste my time grinding, etc...

Help me play it again guy, rouse my interest!

there are more than a few things that were lost in translation. an italian romhacking group called sadNES cITy released translation tools some years ago. the tools are out there
>apart the undub version, there's no retranslation around
the undub "2.0" patch uses the official english translation as the script. nothing was retranslated.

Don't quote me on this, but as far as I can tell, nothing is conceptually different from the original Japanese, it's just that a lot of names were altered. "The Church" is still a church, it's just called "Ethos" now. It's a poor translation, but there are worse ones out there. Mostly it's just awkward sentences and most of the time you can infer what was actually meant. It's blown out of proportion by the highlighting of sentences like "My father? You mean my dad?"

>the game felt "empty"
I'm not exactly sure what to say to this. I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of a new player, and I guess it would seem kind of lonely if all you'd seen was a small village and a bland forest. When you get to the next couple places, it starts to feel more populated and wide-ranging.

>waste my time grinding
No grinding is really necessary. I might be biased from knowing exactly how to approach every battle, but you shouldn't have to stop and grind. In fairness, the high encounter rate is probably what makes this true. But half the game is in gears and those are improved through purchased upgrades, not levels.

>> No.716408

>>715268
>no point in trying to force yourself to like the game
Sorry, not implying I want to "force" myself, it's more something of a "I was rebuffed because I played one hour, but had I started Kingdom Hearts with 2, I'd have been rebuffed of the whole franchise too after the first hour" kind of thing :)

>there are more than a few things that were lost in translation
AFAIR (because this game is on my to-do list since 2004), it was all stuff going on with religion, crosses, etc...

>the undub "2.0" patch uses the official english translation as the script. nothing was retranslated.
Sorry, I meant "as close as I can get to the japanese version" =)

>>716139
>"The Church" is still a church, it's just called "Ethos" now. It's a poor translation, but there are worse ones out there.
I don't really care about "awkward sentences" actually, it's more about feeling that things were "lost in translation", like references to the church and maybe other stuff.

>When you get to the next couple places, it starts to feel more populated and wide-ranging.
Thanks. Also, how long until the game "kicks in" (I get more members, I see a real part of the plot, etc...)?

I won't lie, it's going to focus on Fei, Citan, and the next character (Bart) for a while on just the one continent. Bart's story matters, but it's going to seem like a self-contained detour for a while. The people who are really pulling the strings in this game? You're not going to see them for a while, or they won't be made out to be threats.

It's slow, deliberate, and linear, but after 10-15 hours you'll get a couple more characters after those three, and beyond that arc you'll get the ability to travel the seas, so it does begin to spread its wings. But it is like molasses out of the gate.

I don't mind the "running back and forth", it's just that I only arrived to that part in your picture (actually I quit after, Citan joined and Elly left) and I felt the game "empty". But now, re-reading the dialogs, it feels..."alive". Maybe I just wasn't in the right "mood" back then to fully appreciate dialogs.

Xenogears has three "Lesser men will fall here" moments.

The first is the Kislev Sewers. That's the biggest "oh god I'M DONE WITH THIS SHIT" moment in the game you deal with for a long time.

If you survive that and keep going on, Tower of Babel and its awful jumping and mid-air random encounters will test you next.

Finally, if you can endure, you have only one more slog before the end of the game.

Disc 2.

I am fairly surprised Xenogears is as popular as it is, not lashing out, I find the gameplay far too easy and simplistic to be truly enticing. I'm able to get through every single battle just by button mashing or no real strategy put into it, not to mention those awkward platforming segments, the game has some very jarring flaws in almost every department short of the story, which falls flat in the second disc.

How does the story fall flat in Disk 2? Disk 2 turned into nothing BUT story by making you sit and read through almost all of it.

I like Disk 2 (my opinion is biased due to my love of reading fantasy). Granted, you get very little gameplay out of it but it doesn't detract from the story aspect one bit.

You could argue that even though Disc 2 was nothing but story, it's still condensed. Because it's presented as Fei summarizing everything, you don't get to actually experience the plot...you're flat out told "then this happened" rather than getting to play through it and watch it occur, before being dumped into a battle.
