I like the series a lot. 3 is the best game for me personally. Not a huge fan of 2, but 1 takes some getting used to but is ultimately quality.

I know, it's Fabio, but why the fuck is he on my video game cover? He should stick to women's romance novel covers and margarine commercials. (Also, don't be a fag. It's really gay.)

First game: Good relentless arcade shit. Infinite continues so there's no excuse to be unable to beat this game

Second game: Dick flatteningly hard. Limited continues, music isn't as good, sword range sucks.

Third game: Arguably the worst gameplay seeing as fighting mooks is pointless and can be completely bypassed by wearing the right outfit. Cool art style, fucking fantastic music. Cliffhanger ending sucks but I would love a game set in what happened after the end.

I bought this thing on GOG and like the vibe of it but find it nearly impossible to figure out. Why do 90 percent of melee attacks miss? Why is my partly always "away on an adventure" when I load a save? Has anybody played this? am I just being a boomer

Isn’t the main character in these games a knight? If so, they shouldn’t have a barbarian on the cover as they’re two different hero archetypes.

All three are weird, clumsy-feeling games that somehow transcend their European origin and their weirdo mechanics and turn out to be fun and good. David Wise does a lot of heavy lifting of course, but the graphics are also pretty charming, which is odd considering that Europe normally likes to make cartoon characters as ugly and unlikable as possible for some reason I have never understood.

Personally I find it strange that anybody would like the first game more than the second, but whatever, they're both roughly the same thing I guess and they're both fine. The second one does have various weirdnesses in it, but it's more varied than the first which is a big step up in my opinion. The first game spends too much time in samey-looking caves followed by samey-looking castle areas. It's more of a spelunking game than anything else.

The third one is the least accessible and the most interesting, and although I agree with anon above saying it probably ought to have a progress-recording system, I personally like it better without one, because thanks to that it ends up being actually kinda hard. You can't even continue, as I recall? That's crazily harsh for an NES game. I mean Mario 3 is probably longer, but in that game you can easily get extra lives faster than you lose them if you're not completely incompetent, and on top of that there are warp whistles. It's such a weird game. The world feels very big and it's a little too easy to get lost, the swordfighting mechanics are as goofy as ever, and a couple of those guild tests are stupidly difficult. It's not an entirely pleasant game to play, but it really should be more popular than it is. People suck at games too much for that though. People actually think Dark Souls, a game with infinite continues that lets you grind to improve stats, is hard!

Fabio is good-looking yes, but I don't really understand why he is THE famously good-looking guy from his time. I guess he's just not my type? Oh well.

Can you blame them? Fabio is built like a Greek god. He is the epitome of what every male dreams of being. It's not even sexual, it's just about looking super cool. He's like the suavest mofo in existence and everyone loves him.

Was he? He was on the covers of trashy romantic novels and a couple of perfumes.
>>7030961
Nah, his target have always been women, he's always the "mysterious" type, not the cool/badass one. You wouldn't see Van Damme advertising a perfume.

>> No.7031274

>>7031128
He's not "cool" in the sense that he's an action star like Van Damme, he's cool in that he's the rich sophisticated guy who lives in the mansion on the hill. Of course women love him, that's why men want to be him. Not to fuck him themselves, but to be the guy all the women want to fuck.

It's weird how much I remember all this stuff even though I haven't played the game for over 25 years. Maybe it's just because I was really young, but there was just always something creepy about it to me. I think I might give these a playthrough for Halloween. it might not be a horror game or anything, but it is about as dark as games got back then anyway.

>> No.7034058

>>7033314

I think it's because it's so uncompromising... the first two at least reward you with cool treasures here and there, and if you play for a little while then you'll probably get to the next area even if you don't entirely know what you're doing. The third game is just like, "Here's your drab town that seems to go on forever. You probably have a quest somewhere, maybe. Well, good luck." And then it's more of that for like two hours straight (or however long it lasts). And you never do find out exactly why those bearded midgets want to punch you to death...

It's kinda like with ActRaiser. You expect a sequel to be like the last game, but it's something harsher, and then if you're a dumb kid or a casual player you probably feel alienated and give up. That's what happened to me anyway. I never learned to like this game until I revisited it as an adult.

>Maybe it's just because I was really young, but there was just always something creepy about it to me.
Have to agree... the enemy/mayor designs were all pretty spooky, and the soundtrack is sort of subtly sad all the time. The sequels kinda lost that.
