as a doom fan, how do i get into hexen and heretic? What are they? Are hexen and heretic the same universe?

Bonus question : since it uses the DOOM engine, what other games can i look up that use the doom engine

>> No.7017550

Yes, they're all the same story following the Serpent Raiders conquering realms. Originally there was supposed to be a third game after Hexen called Hecatomb to close off the trilogy, but that went nowhere after Hexen II.
Anyway, games in order are as follows:

Heretic > Hexen > Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel > Hexen II > Hexen II: Portal of Praevus > Heretic 2

Heretic is pretty much a reskin of Doom, so you'll feel right at home.

is it worth tracking down and buying the old games in physical form?

Owning these games sound like a cool idea, but it's your call whether you want to spend cash on physical copies or just download the games off the internet.
I'll warn you right now that you shouldn't buy Hexen II off Steam because it(as well as Quake and Quake 2) doesn't have a working music, so you won't hear any bgm playing during the game. Portal of Praevus was never released digitally, so that might be worth tracking down as a physical copy or just find a torrent that has vanilla and expansion pack with all the audio issues resolved. Plenty of packs with everything already fixed floating out there.

a game without the music isnt the full experience, that's too bad. licensing issues? they should just make a new sound track. anything would be better than nothing. :/

i know doom is ridiculously expensive to find, but i figured these might be cheaper.

I thought only Floppy disk releases of Doom were crazy expensive.

It's basically just Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen and Strife, all are playable through GZDoom if you have the WADs, although the Steam port of Strife is very good

Many games used CD audio back in the 90's and their engines literally don't support any other music format, so there's no way to include music in digital releases. Fan source ports fix it by adding MP3/OGG etc support

If you're not a brainlet, you can just download original CD images (redump etc), make your own MP3 rips (e.g. using DaemonTools + foobar2000), set up a source port etc, but it's probably too much for your zoomer brain so look for a repack I guess ;)

There's literally no point in owning old physical versions unless you're a collector since they've been dumped ten million times and there's no DRM so it's not like you're missing out on some special content that you won't get from a dumped CD/floppy image

This, just get a repack that has the music. I am pretty sure theres a link to one in the Retro FPS/Doom General OP. If not, ask in the thread and someone will link you.

Fucking play them. Both are on the Doom engine, and Heretic especially plays a hell of a lot like Doom. If you are that big of a Doom fan it should do it for you without any extra autistic steps needed to "get into it."

CD and Win95 CD, Shareware CD. Same with Doom II.

I have a CIB Ultimate Doom 3.5 Floppy except for some reason the Previous owner lost the first fucking disk. And I've yet been able to replace it.
