Different genre? Well I suppose it was a more realistic stealth action game(Splinter Cell). Whereas Metal Gear Solid was more arcade-style stealth action.

lol, REmake sold 2 million copies while RE2 remake sold more than 7 million copies

I really really wanted to enjoy it but so much fell short for me. I prefer the first in many ways.

2nd Runner started off the bat so strong with the immensely improved controls. The feeling of slashing through hoards of enemies at lightning speed was amazing. And the first mini boss was great too.

But then it just started to feel like everything else was running counter to the improved controls. It was cool seeing the variety of missions, but having the player go on rails in several of them with a lock on that clearly wasn't built for those types of levels was not fun. Particularly the train level.

What I was most dissapointed by were half the bosses but that's due to the expectations I set. I don't know how to describe it. It felt like there was less freedom with your arsenal to tackle them and there was too much repetition. Sometimes to the point of feeling half way like a platformer boss. The fights with Viola AI and Inhert being the worst offenders for me. Especially the fight gimmicks that came with them. It felt there was only so many times you can hit them and it was in the game's very specific window of saying when you can. And it wasn't hard, it just felt really aggravating and tedious. I guess I was just spoiled by fight with Viola in the first game which felt like a dogfight.

Maybe I'll try it again sometime soon with a fresh mindset.

It's not really terrible or anything, but it was always talked about like it was total cream of the crop. And then I played it and it was like 30% weak shooter stages, 60% scroller fighter, and 10% actually pretty good bosses. The platforming is barely existent and the combat has some great elements and works for the early stages, but later on every enemy has a projectile and while half will rush you, everyone else will just stand back and fill the screen with beams. This comes from both sides in bland flat ground screen locked arenas. Your attacks hold you in place for just that split second too long, so much of the latter stages is just doing a roundhouse kick, very quickly boosting up to dodge projectiles, waiting for everyone to stop pinballing about the place, and doing it again.

I think there's a really good game lurking under the surface of it, the mechanics are all pretty cool. Maybe if the screens were at least a little bigger. Also the sun boss is probably one of the most grueling fucking fights on hard mode. You can savestate in the perfect place in the last 5% of HP and still take dozens of tries just to get even one more hit in before a big flaming tentacle smacks you. I hate bosses that become extremely difficult largely only in the very final few seconds of their fight.

Most disappointing sequels of all time? As in high expectations, and completely under delivered? Top five, lets go:

5) Raiden III
4) Resident Evil 4
3) Sonic Wings 3
2) Sonic 2
1) Samurai Shodown III

None of these were extremely bad on their own. But as sequels they completely fail to deliver.

its best to play the two games as a single experience of sorts, the 2nd runner is not entirely about being intimidated by your opponents nor is it absolutely about dominating them with your perfect superweapon, you would have already gone through such trials in the first

the actual problem is sort of just that you never feel like you "level up", you just keep going full speed to finish the war

but then there are those weirdly comfy intermission where your girlfriend navigates you through a minefield or you have to open a specific storage container to save a lost mission contact

ON THE OTHER HAND you absolutely can dunk on every single thing in the game non-stop if you're actually good enough, whether it's inhert or viola breaking off the rails and gimmicks of the fight just requires that you predict and counter them consistently.

REmake was so disappointing that Mikami finally buried the stupid genre for good. So, in a sense, it is improtant as a special kind of historic footnote. As a game, it's just a vastly inferior take on the brilliant original game.

Sega pioneered astroturfed consensus long before it dominated in all other areas of society
They MUST HAVE bribed all the game reviewers, because EGM and GamePro were just raving about this fucking game, claiming it was some new, transcendent classic. "It must be played to be understood", sort of bullshit.
Even the book 'Console Wars' tried to maintain the illusion, 25 years later.
It's just a complete piece of shit.
Literally never met anybody who liked it.
