If you want an easier shmup to play I recommend looking into Gradius 1 as well. Has some bite but it's by far the easiest game in the series.

The Western arcade versions of raizing's early games, Sorcer Striker and Kingdom Grandprix, are also very reminiscent of console game difficulty like you listed.

For me, it's the NES port of Dragon Spirit. Vertical scrolling, stages with terrain and obstacle variety, upper and lower plane management, great visuals for the NES and a fantastic soundtrack. Plus one of the most clever implementations of a difficulty select I've ever seen in a game. It's the perfect evolution of Xevious and a great beginner shmup

I've always greatly enjoyed playing shumps for more of a relaxing expereance. There is something about getting in to "the zone" where you stop actively thinking about your movements or whats happening on the screen and you just... do. Granted it helps being 1-2 drinks in.
I'll never clear Mushihimisama on Ultra with that sort of attitude granted, but who fucking cares, I can still enjoy myself plenty on Manic. Don't have to 2-All DoDonPatchi to enjoy the game's awesome OST and art either.
A lot of STG fans do go about it the wrong way IMO, they use STGs as nothing more then something to hyper grind to pass time, same thing happens with much of the rhythm game genre and speedrunning as a whole.

Common thing back in the arcade days. Usually the difficulty spikes HARD most often on stage 3 sometimes 4, thats the point where either you've got to get gud or leave the arcade cabinet so someone else can hop on. It was the developer's way of cycling people on the cabinets. Same way as ranking systems would often make the game harder the higher rank you got to get even good players off the cabinets faster.

Are there any SHMUPs I can play if I refuse to play stuff that's based on trial & error? I don't want a game where a successful playthrough is 20 minutes but learning it is 10 hours. Alpha Mission II is kinda Slap fighter 2

Macross and Macross II are ok, because you can change mech form quite easily.

Mr Heli is pretty good as well, (IREM) and some fairly unique power ups.

I like shumps you can kinda hack a bit.

I like "cheating" in Raiden(s) using one fighter to sit on the other and you fire become "skinflint" which a super-powerful fire that tears through enemies.

Raiden, II or DX are very satisfying to play, but the end boss was a bit meh I think in DX

R type space ship level and the one after a lot of fun.

I am meh - to okay at shumps to bad.

The only game I could beat at will on 1 credit no lives lost was the heavy barrel.

You still can't really play it now properly because you need a rotary joystick, but year I could beat that while reading a book at the same time at my peak.

What makes a good shump is a hold to get bigger fire button (rtype like), and good upgrade system, and bosses/sub-bosses that blow up well and a good gimic

So in dragon breed, it gets most of those boxes learning to use the dragon to protect you is a lot of fun.

Slapfight has a definite rhythm to it. it Quite satisfying to get good at.

Oscar is good due to upgrades but a killer if you get out.

New players hear talk about leaderboards, high score threads for hard shmups and get a certain impression. They might see superplayers playing for an audience or streamers playing for a lot of viewers at an event. They might see shmup forums or discords full of people and assume the scene is alive, competitive and focused, it's not, it's dead.

You pick a game and grind it alone, no one is going to talk to you about it or offer much help. No one cares about your streams, your new PB or replays or whatever technique you figured out. Most of the players you meet are stagnant and clueless. The few skilled players are quiet, they all play different games and don't have much to talk about. And if you don't fit a certain personality style you get shunned. Most of their gaming conversations are time wasting chit chat about trivial details.

No, I'm telling them the truth. While shmups are difficult and fun, they don't have a competitive or strategic scene at all, at all. It's totally dead. So if you get into them prepare to just whittle away at a piece of wood for thousands of hours making a tiny spoon no one will see or appreciate. Don't think you're getting into a competitive game where opponents are looking to crush your score and learn your strats, nah, none of that. It's you whittling away in your corner for 5000 hours.
And that's fine if you want that limited experience.

I stream for myself. Its an easy way to record my runs and archive anything i want to save. Its open for anyone to drop in and watch, chat, whatever if they want to or are interested. I dont have a mic, i dont promote. I am not in it to be a streamer.
