Sorry that took a while, I was only gonna take a screenshot of the starting room, but the music in Sigil (especially in the first level, and also in the second level), makes me pumped as fuck and I just got into it.
Also, I actually tried out a bunch of lighting modes, and I think actually that the 'Software' setting looks nicer than the 'Dark' setting I was using. Pic related is before...

Been playing the Japanese Community Project. Having fun so far but map 16 is pain in the ass. I dont mind an ambush but instantly appearing monsters right in my face is annoying. Teleport them in. Give me some kind of warning or telegraph. Other than that its been great. The difficulty isnt to bad either. Is it going to pick up later or does it kinda coast on medium for most of the journey?

I don't think judging a map is really a matter of authority anyway, modding doom and other games has always been the realm of individual amateurs. As long as you can articulate your impressions of a wad and you have some kind of reasoning for why you think it succeeds or fails, I think that could be definitely something worth watching. For instance, I've thought a lot about how particularly scythe tends to use block monster lindefs to great effect, forcing the player to approach enemies rather than the other way around. Subtle stuff like that mostly only gets thought about by the map designer, but not written about or analyzed. There's already lots of videos that talk about game design generally, within the context of doom it could be a really good niche. Though I think it might be difficult without an intermediate technical understanding of how doom maps are constructed, and how the enemies work individually.

If you like skulking around gloomy, moody environments on the Quake 1 engine with meaty weapons and tons of enemies to shoot at, Wrath is definitely worth it as it is right now. But I think it's bar none the worst case of "your purchase now is not a purchase, but an investment" I've ever seen. There are four maps available right now, and they're great maps. 400+ enemies to kill in each, wonderful looking vistas akin to Unreal but on the Q1 engine, and they're promising 11 more. I already really like Wrath or I wouldn't be shilling it, but I don't know that I can justify the price, even the sale price they're asking for, for 4 maps right now. But 15 maps on par with the level they're at right now at 20-24 USD? That would be a steal, an absolute steal. Right now it has the makings of my favorite FPS of all time, but only the makings.

Oh and I recommend anyone with even passing experience with shooters play on Outlander, the game's highest difficulty. The game has these disposables like throwing a potion that causes monster in-fighting, using a rune that siphons life from felled enemies, etc. and they friggen shower you with these things to the point where I have five in this screenshot and didn't think to use them for most of the encounters except to amuse myself. I can't imagine how easy the game would be on anything lower with the amount of disposables they give you.

I'd recommend it. I do wish the movement had more air control, but it's very fun to experiment with nonetheless. You get a melee weapon where if you hold down the alt fire button, you can charge an attack that gives you a significant boost in speed/momentum that you can preserve for bhops. Yeah, I like EOTW a lot, but those guys also had their strong biases. In many ways, analyzing level design comes down to opinion, there's many aspects of designing a level which are pretty much objective, but also many which are strongly subjective, such as people who enjoy slaughter maps, and people who don't care for them very much, and then people who prefers key/switch hunting to be straightforward and not drawn out, and those who really enjoy Eternal Doom.

In that way, it's a lot like film criticism, the objective sides and the subjective sides.

What can i say about this one?
I never played any of his maps for Q1, but looking at this one for Q1, im kinda satisfied and eager to play some.
thee levels are well tailored and the 1st map may fuck you over a bit, mostly because of quake 2's cursed earthquake physics.
After it you get some of the best and smooth Q2 mapping experiences made by a early Q1 veteran, its hard in some parts, also be prepared for some nasty traps using the best assholes that this game has to offer when used right in Q2, mainly on nightmare/hard+.
Also the map layout is really good.

It's set after The Rapture, so in a way there'd be a sort of post-apocalyptic or semi-post-apocalyptic theme, large parts of civilization are just fucked and it's Mad Max/Escape From New York/Fist Of The North Star around the clock, complete with punks to get into violent and gory fights with, except maybe it takes place in the vague 1950s or something, instead of Blood's vague 1920s, or Blood 2's vague future sci-fi.
Though with the bleak ambiguity of whether or not the preacher character in question is actually on a mission by God, perhaps there's a silver lining to it in that his crusade of killing punk raiders is saving people's lives, and they start to rethink how they're living, growing a small congregation of people who think of him as their savior.

There'd probably be magic, with evil wizards using black magic to raise zombies, create mutants, and conjure demons, for some more enemy variety besides just dudes with knives and guns, but should the preacher have any supernatural powers himself, be they divine or otherwise, or would it work better if he didn't?

So I remembered that post from twitter with the AD author explaining Chaos Mode. He mentioned that it only works with id1 maps, so I loaded Arcane into AD, and lo and behold, it works. Some time ago, an anon here told me to get my shit together and fix my audio recording setup. After some tinkering, I did accomplish decent results, but eventually it became even worse. So, I bought a new microphone and decided to record the first level of the 1994 tune-up community project, both the original and the tuned-up versions. While normally I agree with the "more than one difficulty" argument, sometimes megawads do a REALLY bad job of scaling progression, so you end up with half the maps being fine on one difficulty, and the other half being either boring af on HMP or insanely overkill on UV. The worst is when its not even a linear scale, where random maps are way off in their placement relative to their difficulty. There are a lot of really great individual maps in community projects, but I tend to dislike them for full playthroughs for that reason.

Original three episodes of Doom aren't particularly difficult on UV.
Thy Flesh Consumed is fucking rough on UV for the first couple of levels, but then chills out. Doom 2 ups the challenge some from the first game, but never gets as hard as Thy Flesh Consumed.

Playing the game Pistol Start generally makes most levels more challenging, as continuous play wasn't really accounted for much when making the levels. Arguably some levels, like E4M2, may become easier with Pistol Start, because E4M1 is a tight and intense attritionfest, so you're likely to arrive with low health and little ammo if you play progressively. For the most part, challenge does however increase.

It makes a big difference if you take in a rocket launcher to a level that doesn't spawn one. Hunted from Plutonia is the best example of this: Until you beat the level, your only serviceable weapon in that archvile maze is the SSG. If you played continuously you'll have a weapon that deals SSG damage without the huge reload.
If you don't "get the feeling" of a strain on resource management it could mean you're either decent at the game or the level is neatly balanced around it, so that's good. This also inadvertently supports how much more imbalanced a continuous playthrough would be regarding resource management.

Question to everyone:

I am currently balancing the Lawgiver and the enemies.
There are two conditions:
>Lawgiver has only a set amount of ammunition and there are no refills in the level (except for some special occasions)
>Enemies are hitting almost as hard as the player

Under those conditions, what is better:
>Fewer enemies with more health
>More enemies with less health

This is for standard "shoot what moves" tactic, and crowd control moves and such are not considered here (such as shooting incendiary in a hallway and let the dumbasses walk in there, lining them up and shooting them with AP or using the judge shout).

The first means I need more shots per enemy, thus giving them more time to hurt me severely, however, it's easier to concentrate on single enemies.
The second one means that enemies can die in a single shot, but with more of them, if I get swarmed, I'm basically dead.

Not all enemies are *this* weak and some are pretty strong, but I was wondering, because this whole time I had the first choice going and just tried the second one and it's also not that bad - I managed to shoot the very last perp with my very last available shot, but then again, I didn't try any of the abovementioned tactics and am not a very good Doom player in general.

Hm, I could probably use some more melee enemies... and I should *maybe* implement the Daystick., although having lots of dudes with only iron bars or shanks among heavily armed other dudes, and attacking a Judge on top of that, seems kinda suicidal. But I also noticed that maybe I should design levels more with the Lawgiver's modes in mind (then again, this is only the second level I made for this, I am certain the next ones will be better).
