Well he and his mannerisms probably had some sort of significance to Doki Doki Panic lore before it was lost in translation to Mario Madness

He was much friendlier looking in DDP.

Scary Phanto is pure Super Mario Bros. 2

Probably has to do with the Phantom of The Opera and or Japan having an identity crisis and liking masks too much for that reason, or both.

The USA took their honor away but they've always loved war masks, and then there are now no-face masks sporadically in their art.

No-face in sprited away was very bipolar. So's the mask, two colors, jackal and hide Harvey Dent Phantom of Opera shit going on of bipolarness.

I mean, the Japanese are weird and all but people have complicated reasons for why they did things even there. Like their tentacle rape has a fisherman's wife thing to go with it, there's probably some no-face myth I'm not even aware of that probably has to do with being thirsty or bipolar or both. Or then again maybe faceless things that come to life suddenly just creep humans out. Probably an instinct that came from not wanting to be smooshed by old trees falling. Or something.

The masks are just one of many references to the Dream Factory festival, the Fuji TV event that Doki Doki Panic was made to promote.

Someone took his key, isn’t it obvious?

Did you know? Doki Doki Panic is actually based off a prototype originally planned as Super Mario Bros. 2!

As a kid I legitimately dreaded being chased by this guy. Probably the first time a video game actually could be scary.

That key is the only thing with sentimental value in his eyes.

You could always just pick up the key and immediately drop it. Then phanto would just fuck off. The longer you waited to pick it up again, the longer it took him to come back.
