nah, doom is in a sweet spot where it's deep enough to keep your attention but simple enough that mapping is super easy. it's why there are hundreds of good wads for doom but only dozens of good mods for duke3d or blood.

i guess i could argue with you but i suppose that's a matter of taste. in either case its been almost 25 years since D3D came out and almost 27 since doom came out, vanilla tools are no longer relevant for mapping. (unless vanilla is all you have since no one ever bothered creating new mapping tools for the game you're modding...)

Marathon objectively had the best combat of all the 2.5D shooters. Native mouse aim, no hitscanning, great air mobility, recoil, and three-dimensional physics. Doom had a better cast of enemies and the Build games had the most advanced tech overall, but Marathon was the most refined and perfected experience.
