I'm struggling towards the end of Scourge of Armagon on hard simply due to the lack of ammo I have to deal with the ambushes. You either find most of the secrets or you just have to race for the exit because you will end up with just the axe or mjolnir otherwise. Blood is great but it kind of lives & dies with the level design. Because most of the enemy roster besides cultists isnt very interesting or difficult to fight. Whereas with Doom just fighting revenants and mancubi in a simple circular arena can be fun.

Do try it, the game kinda got a reverse difficulty curve (rising again at the addon episodes) so once you get past the first episode it should be a smooth, or at least much smoother, ride. The cultist heavy levels almost remind me of Hotline Miami in a way, you can go wild if you know the enemy placements and use your powerups well or you can follow the safer path of shooting and chucking TNT from behind a corner.

I always liked how Ranger's armor looked a lot more... Medieval? With his starting weapons being a friggin' axe and a shotgun he felt like a unique mix of knight and 20th century military to me. Quake was supposed to be a fantasy action-adventure game, except they couldn't pull out a design document out of Romero and had to retool it into another Doom-like game at the last moment. Hence the dimension-hopping excuse of a plot - artists spent a year churning out medieval fantasy assets, and suddenly they had to turn them into a shooter. Too bad they didn't thought about going full steampunk - all they had to do was replace launchers with some kind of medieval cannon and mortar, and then bam, they wouldn't even had to make any techbase stuff anymore.

Now that I think of it, Romero worked closely with Raven, so he had already implemented his idea about a game where you are a mighty warrior with magic hammer - in Hexen, so that why he was out of steam at id.

Yeah, and those all come from places like Doomworld, DoomerBoards, or the ZDoomforums, etc, the people who actually know and can do shit, them using Twitter is largely incidental/tangential to their Dooming. Meanwhile, Twitter actually has fuckall for its own Doom community in its userbase, near everyone else who uses Twitter for talking Doom is just posting reheated newDoom memes.

So what you're actually looking at is a cross community potluck, except some randos from Twitter are also invited, and a lot of them likely will contribute little if anything. Depending on who joins in, there could be some very good maps, but how much do you expect that to come from Twitter randos? A lot of this comes back to Twitter's ridiculously tiny and archaic character limit, which chokes out any kind of good discussion, and really promotes much more primitive form of interaction. You can communicate in DMs of course, but that's not public and open for any user to participate.

Again, I wish them luck, and if we're fortunate there isn't just some good maps, there actually is some good soul on there who has some talent to them, and actually takes to making maps for Doom and gets more involved and invested, but I still think this is a very quaint concept.

Seems daunting but some are only like 9 pages. The major storylines are good.

Its absolutely fucking insane but always a page turner.

I wish it had more consistent art however.

Also played the oild shitty console game, Dredd has some nice galls around him.

Can someone please explain to me why DOOM 2 gets all the love when it comes to mods? I'll admit, I'm asking mostly because I don't own DOOM 2 yet, but when I keep hearing that DOOM is well-known for it's modding community, I was pretty miffed when I found out that nearly every WAD and mod nowadays only works with DOOM 2

There's exceptions, of course, (Samsara and the 3DO total conversion are ones I've played. And of course there's Brutal DOOM, which I have yet to try), but they're extremely hard to come by.

What exactly is the advantage of developing stuff with just DOOM 2 in mind? Because unless it's a WAD that makes use of the things exclusive to DOOM 2 (like Archviles, the SSG, or the various new hazards), most of the mods I've seen could've very easily worked with DOOM 1.

Before I go to bed, I have to say something.
I like Doom more than Doom 2 - for vanilla gaming.
Doom 1/Ultimate on Chocolate or Crispy is top comfy. It works very well with keyboard, so when I feel lazy I just can hack away at the keyboard and people think I'm working.
The level design just draws me in, compared to Doom 2 where I hate almost everything up to Dead Simple and lots of stuff after it. I can't even properly describe the feel.... If a Doom level is an old leather couch you spend four hours on without noticing, Doom 2 is an Ikea couch with one of those coarse covers that fuzz instantly and don't even have armrests.
When playing Doom I don't even miss the SSG or the new enemies, it just feels like... home.
I can't even say it's nostalgia; I started gaming in the 3D era because my family didn't get a computer until 2000. However, I feel the same with Need for Speed Underground 1 and 2. 2 is *objectively* the better game, but it never grabbed me like 1 did.

Project Brutality adds lots more weapons and lots more enemies. Anons previous have called it bloated, but I don't see it that way at all. I've had a million times more fun with Project Brutality than Brutal Doom due to the sheer customizability of weapon spawns, enemy spawns, enemy and weapon progression, etc. Pistol starts are so fun with PB since different weapons have a semi-random chance of appearing, i.e. the devastator vs the grenade launcher, autoshotgun vs double barrel sawed off. Enemies are the same, i.e. centaur vs cyber baron. PB is fucking golden, they just need to fix the splashing problem so maps with lots of water can actually be playable.

>I actually preferred the lore someone in /vr/ came up with eons ago, that Ranger came from an alternate Earth that diverged from ours a long time ago.
I might have been part of that conversation 'cause I remember it as well. The idea that the world Ranger comes from is sort of like ours, but went in a different direction tech-wise, a la Fallout never inventing the microtransistor. The tech has gotten advanced enough to have interdimensional slipgates, on the fly instant healing devices, and so on, but the tech was never miniaturized because no one ever saw a reason to. Instead of compacting everything into a palm-device or a magic box the size of a suitcase, they just built giant, sprawling facilities to contain literal hallways of beeping machines and wall panels with a purpose long forgotten as everything is in a constant state of decay from lack of upkeep. Weapon tech never advanced beyond good ol' lead and copper projectiles with the exception of bulky, heavy prototype laser cannons only used by elite human troops and the Thunderbolt which might not even be of human origin given that it's never found in any idbase levels or even near Grunts/Enforcers in other worlds (other than deathmatch maps). There's no cool power armor or virtual HUD map add-ons like Doomguy has access to, just varying strengths of ballistic armor and a standard-issue open face helmet that looks like someone hewed it out of a chunk of granite. Enforcers get flimsy gas masks and the Bio Suit required for delving in the horribly polluted water looks more like a heavy fabric 20th century diving suit.

>>7005882
I don't have a problem with most of QC's lore updates/additions, but I could go without the explicit intervention of the Old Ones in that regard. I prefer the idea of mankind fucking around with rusty pipes and portals until they discover slipgate jumping on their own and all the negative consequences that come with it.

Sort of. Episodes 1 thru 3 are technically playable from a shotgun start because most of the levels were designed and playtested separately and in a different order than they ended up in in the final game, but you probably won't have a fun time with later maps. Episode 4 is designed to be played through in one go and is thus much lighter on pickups compared to the other episodes because Sandy enjoys fucking with you.

Adding even more cartoon weapons that serve the same function than other weapons, you don't need more than one machine gun, you also don't need mutiple super ultra duper ssj3 shotgun or a black hole nuke generator that you can dual wield when the normal brutal weapons are fine. also, its no surprise seeing how after willits and mick gordon were booted, the former id devs started to become friendlier again with the company, and mainly now that id was acquired by MS, also its possible that reznor may re release the vinyl album again with the removed development comments in it, now that Zenimax is out of the final decision business and MS gives the final answer.
and a side note, per MS terms, since MS got all of Zenimax proprieties, id may release their source codes again due to MS policy about open source.

This one is basically a a "modern" classic, using modern features to enahace some classic things while maintaing a high resoultion, ambient occlusion which is a preference I enjoy, bloom is another one you can use, but I prefer it without (can easily turn down to 320x200, 640x400 or whatever your prefrence is, including letterboxing with black borders or strecting to fit screen) high fps and not having it be so crispy
The screenshot resolution is 1920x1080p, no scaling

The left one on the original is pure classic, 320x200, 35fps cap, vsync, letterboxing with black border, everything set to vanilla, crispy as you can get

This one is running the software lighting which is the inbetween, so it's on the darker side, can be changed to dark or something brighter if need be

I think the left one on the other image comparison looks better, but functoinally it's not as good to be playing many .wads
I'd probably only use it on vanilla maps

its a solid map, a well made one for its time, the custom textures, skybox and theme carries it very well.
Also its interactive, there is a secret shambler early on that may give some challenge but the rest is smooth.

It'd not be that hard to do half of the weapons, there's centered Glock and Beretta sprites, CAR15 sprites, MP5 sprites, SPAS12 sprites, etc, I'd kind of just need to alter and retouch them some. Not sure I'd bother doing the HEV suit hands though, because that's a fuckload of work.
Gluon Gun and Gauss Gun would be a bit more work, but I could probably Frankensprite that together to get decent approximations, the RPG would be comparatively simple.

In some ways it makes sense, in others it doesn't. Staying centered, even if not currently using the sights, would make sense for a more realism oriented shooter (and using a sighting system like Hideous Destructor you could handwave away more typical ADS).
On the other hand, to the side makes sense in other ways, because depending on what's happening in the game, you may not even be in combat at the moment, if you're in some calm spot it'd make more sense to not be having the stock to your shoulder constantly, in a context like this the more typical ADS you see today being a mode you engage makes some sense (though obviously isn't suitable for all kinds of gameplay).

I like angled guns in general just because some games have nice looking gun models and I like being able to see them better, but for Doom there's a number of practical concerns which makes centered guns just way more suited for the game, one approach I like is centered sprites for idling and shooting, and then angled sprites for a reload animation (but a fast reload animation).

I feel like it all depends on whether or not the game has manual aim down sights. If it does, it makes sense to have the guns be angled and to the side, although bonus points if the gun is lowered when in non-combat scenarios. If the game doesn't have aim down sights, I really like centered guns. In a weird way it just makes it look like you're always aiming down sights which is weird, but I dig it.

Because that's simply not trivial to do, GzDoom and PrBoom+ are built upon *decades* of programming, and neither started from an entirely fantastic foundation.
If you wanted to add stuff like culling and multithread support to GzDoom, you'd have to near start over from scratch, as in starting over from scratch on decades of work. You also have the thing where either you adhere to the PRNG tables and how they work, or you do not have demo compatibility with the original game or the other ports that do, and if you don't, there's little point in even having any demo support. Perhaps you could have some sort of PRNG mode to run the game in, but it wouldn't be properly compatible with any of the advanced features like Decorate or ZScript, which may be using true RNG, or you'd have to add some kind of compat for how things like those would affect and be affected by the PRNG tables, which seems of dubious value.

One of the biggest reasons would probably be that you would have to start ALL over on making the port compatible with like 75% of all Doom material out there, there's parts which would be very quick (like just supporting the original base games, and supporting the Boom format), but then you gotta make all these decades of mods and maps run like they should in the port (which may be a very length trial and error process), or else everyone will complain and not use it.

Perhaps someone would be willing to start their own brand new advanced port with optimization and future proofing in mind, but they would be playing a very, VERY long game of catchup to where ports like GzDoom are today. This wouldn't even be inconceivable (hell, there's certainly gonna be some people who'll be glad to help, GzDoom itself is by no means a one man effort), but you would need a talented programmer who's very dedicated to working on the port and won't burn himself out, and you better be fine with waiting maybe a decade.

Are you willing to step up?

The PrBoom+ fork is looking extremely promising, and one of the reasons I can't fully hate Graf, because he's actually putting in the effort of doing something like this, something which isn't just for his own port, but which would be a fantastic utility for basically all the big sourceports, with cross compatibility.

Honestly GZDoom is it's own beast and I don't really care if other ports support all of its features, I'm okay with having that one standalone. I just want something with the feature set of crispy to be compatible with Boom stuff.

I use GZDoom
I have a mod called Vanilla Essence which with a hotkey makes it basically a crispier crispy doom (320x200)
it looks great, you can increase the resolution to higher if you want, but I don't feel the need, you can also make it that resoultion and stretch to screen, or just have the black borders

otherwise my usual settings for GZdoom is 1920x1080 / uncapped fps
software lighting
Tonemap to Palette
no texture filtering
No Ambient occlusion / dynamic lighting / anti-aliasing
fullscreen hud (no green sides)
no smoothing of any kind
No mipmaps

and then a few misc stuff, but these are the main ones

this is the best option for me, it's not perfection, but it's pretty great

A format and language which GzDoom and Eternity supports, where you can define various aspects of a level:
>level name
>the order of levels
>optional episodes and their progression
>secret exits
>music files
>map specials such as 667 functionality
>sky texture
>your own skill levels
>your own intermission screens, even with Doom 1 style map screens
>your own text crawls (one after every single level if you really wanted to)

Things like that, without having to adhere to basic limitations as set out by regular Doom or Doom 2 functionality. PrBoom+ is having a fork made which will support a new type of MAPINFO, UMAPINFO (Universal), this would be really useful due to all these things described, and more, and on top of that it's planned that this functionality will be a shared feature between ports like the PrBoom+ fork, Crispy Doom, Eternity, and GzDoom.
The idea is that this will also be implemented with support for an extended DeHacked language, all while retaining compatibility with 27+ years of vanilla Doom and Boom demo files.

Imagine for instance that you wanted to make a Doom 1 style episode, complete with a map in the intermission screen, yet still have the new monsters and Super Shotgun from Doom 2. In the past, you would generally have to use something like Eternity or GzDoom for that, but with UMAPINFO support, you could do that trivially with a Boom port or even Crispy Doom, something you could just not do before.

I honestly wouldn't mind a 1080p, or at the very least a multiple of 240p like 960p, 1440p, etc... option in Crispy Doom. It's the banding and color pallete that draws me to Crispy, not really the resolution.

>> No.7010042

I'm assuming that Crispy Doom and PrBoom+(U) will have the same multiplayer support as they've had in the past. The project isn't going to remain indefinitely in Graf's hands though, so I guess we'll just have to see where the other devs take it. I wouldn't mind if he stuck around long enough to implement better sound code, because lord knows PrBoom+'s is trash.

Another thing you could easily do with MAPINFO is something like branching paths, imagine a Boom mapset where you had optional path progression. Pic related is from Outrun, but it'll convey the idea; every map has two exits, and they each go to a different map, which each have two exits going to a different map each, and so on.

More things you could do is to have say, a 5 map episode, but every level of the episode has a secret exit to its own secret level.
