I've beat 2 several times, just finished my first playthrough of 1. In many ways I prefer the 1st, and the game doesn't have a large drop in quality later on. System Shock thread as well I guess.

>> No.6996303

I just beat SS2 for the first time. Why is the last half of the game such a fucking slog? It falls off harder than Half Life 1 and that's saying something.

Tight deadlines I'm guessing.

I like both.
I don't have a favorite as both are good, but i think people hate 2 because theyve been memed via youtube. I found out about the series from some stupid top survival horror games vid.
Because of that and the whole "conserve your resources" meme first time I played i snuck everywhere. Then I played the first game after 2 and it finally clicked, they're action games not survival horror. I'm doing a psi play through now, running around at a million mph wrecking everything and cause of it I actually like 2 better than I did before.

>> No.6996370

How do you like that pov VR shit in 1?

>> No.6996371

>>6996303
Yeah, probably just time constraints.
I played through it recently. I used to think just the Body of the Many was bad, but honestly, everything past the Recreation Deck isn't very good. Command and the Rickenbacker are both worse than earlier levels.
It's just a gradual slide into mediocrity.

>> No.6996404

I like 1 more but 2 is also good. I think 2 tried to do the escalation bit 1 did, but failed to pull it off likely due to running out of time.

You mean the hud that you can disable?

>> No.6996814

I really don't think it drops off that bad. Command deck is multiple floors and Richenbacker is pretty tense. Just going through the vents can be a little freaky

I feel like I put 10 hours into it, maybe it's just such a slog that it feels longer. I honestly hate all the game mechanics. Weapon degredation can suck my ass. Enemies spawning in a room I just cleared to come in and attack me from behind is also shit.

>> No.6998558

>>6996936
2 is hard to get into. The RPG system kept me out for a while. I remember a long time ago I saw some review that basically said if you level your shit wrong you get to points where you can't progress (basically a half truth). I liked 1 so much that I soldiered through. It's still a great game. Really good for spooktober.

>>6998541
>Weapon degredation can suck my ass.
I never really had a problem with it. Especially early in when you don't have enough ammo to have your weapons degrade. I just used the wrench 99% of the time until the game started throwing bigger enemies at me and loaded up on maintenance tools or whatever they were.
>Enemies spawning in a room I just cleared to come in and attack me from behind is also shit.
But 1 also did this

Melee weapons are in it for a reason. Also psi tier 2 has something that prevents weapon degradation. Game is a cakewalk with it

No it didn't. The only enemies that consistently respawn are those invisible blob monsters and autobombs Shodan throws at you in the last maze. Other than enemies only respawn after you've been away from a floor for a long amount of time.

The laser sword seemed like a cool idea, but requires too much of a useless stat to be buffed and then the hum of it was too annoying so I just reloaded and didn't spec for it.

Honestly, the invisible blob monsters was exactly what I was thinking of when I posted that and I do remember enemies respawning when you had to backtrack but now that I think about it, it was because SHODAN was guarding the reactor and shit.

I don't even think he was talking about the laser sword. If you have the BrawnBoost equipped and maybe some points in STR (which gives you inventory space to) you can 2 shot the hybrids (almost every single enemy) with the wrench and have basically no investment in melee at all. Then when the hybrids start getting phased out you can bust out the real guns. Also with smash the crystal shard out DPS' the laser sword.

>> No.7001690

I was referring to the wrench and shard. Have never used the laser rapier in 2
The shard can almost one shot cyborg assassins

>>7000524
Reactor because of that sick music. Also the first time you go through you're really underequipped, so every hopper poses a big threat, but then when you come back later with the laser sword, you can just obliterate everything. It's a good feel.

You really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel. So the reason people prefer 1 to 2, or even dislike 2, is because SS2 was slapped on some random top 10 video that no one remembers? Youtube really is going to be the next scapegoat used to shitpost and kill any chance of a discussion.

I'm pretty sure that's where the turn the music meme off comes from. Some people do that for more "atmosphere" and because of it they think it's a survival horror game, not an action game. That's all I'm saying

>> No.7003064

>>7001940
There's no time limit even though the game acts like the reactor is about to blow, you can take as long as you want. That is unless you're playing the enhanced edition on the hardest difficulty, iirc that adds like a 6 or 7 hour time limit to the whole game, not just that last section.

I never saw whatever irrelevant top 10 vid you're talking about and I immediately turned the music off when I played it without anyone telling me to. It clashed way too much with the atmosphere for me to stomach it. It's so obviously apparently the game is forcing horror themes in every avenue. From the logs, to the sound effects, the ghosts, the body horror, the atmosphere, the cutscenes, etc. It's like every scifi horror cliche thrown into one game. Even the DEVS THEMSELVES said in a letsplay of SS1 that they gave you just enough to scrape by: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LDiTZ89j-Q

Your opinion is so moronic that the only way you can justify it to yourself is to blame youtube despite the only example you can scrape up is a fucking "Watch Mojo" vid, which alone is evident of how fucked up your thought process and view on things is.

>> No.7004260

honestly, I still don't like the MedSci music. It's probably the worst track in the game.

>> No.7004706

>>7003771
>Dude you're a moron for thinking 2 is an action game
Yes anon that's why the soldier says "nah" at the end like a one liner and in typical B movie fashion they leave it open for a sequel.
The music clearly isn't supposed to imply it's not survival horror either, right?
If you think they give you "Just enough too scrape by" you are a child.
They give you way more than you need, even on the hardest difficulties because it is not a survival horror game. If it was you would not be able to light yourself on fire and run at 100 mph with a grenade launcher wrecking everything
Play the game again and maybe you'll see it's more than just the "SO spooky" bs meme you think it is.
It has horror in it sure, but that is not the main focus of the game. It's closer to being die hard in space than anything else and YOU are the moron if you don't see it
