With the Lawgiver being basically finished, I am currently doing maps...
well, ONE map, that showed to be a bit more complicated than I had
expected in the beginning. It's a mall, but not a regular future space
mall, but a novelty "back to the 20th century" mall, with all kinds of
wacky 20th century stuff or what future people consider that. I have a
library where you can smell books, original ugly toilets, a 50s diner
with a roboservant (pictured left) and a 20th century antiques gallery.
Apart from an artist's rendition of 2nd world war, I don't really know
what to put on the pedestals. I was thinking stuff like oldschool tin
trash cans, some kind of android sheep in lieu of a real one and such
stuff. Anybody else got any ideas? Also, are there any futuristic
civilians I can get my hands on? GB Doom only has like one dickless guy
and a business chick. Although I just thought maybe I could put a wax
statue of the business chick in there.

It's pretty long, each map is something between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on how long you wanna Indiana Jones around looking for secrets and exploring every nook and cranny, one or two maps can get up into multiple hours if you REALLY want to find every single thing (Foggy Bottom is one of them), it was pretty exhausting by the end, yet it was actually quite enjoyable at the same time.

Overall, I enjoyed Arcane Dimensions quite thoroughly, doing a level a day or two. Even the test levels are actually kind of nice for what they are.

The game came out in 1993, and has been very popular and remembered fondly as a classic since, and the source code was released in like 1997, of course there will be a LOT of sourceports. They all serve different purposes, but for the most part, there's like 5 sourceports which are the most popular;

>Chocolate Doom (a reliable and accurate emulation of the original game)
>Crispy Doom (the original game except there's some simple quality of life features)
>PrBoom+ (vanilla-ish gameplay with some more advanced mapping features, fantastic demo compat)
>GzDoom (highly advanced mods and mapping features)
>Zandronum (because GzDoom's netplay is dogshit)

There's plenty more, but these are the ones people are going to be talking about and using the most. Five isn't a lot, and they're distinct enough that I don't see how it would be very confusing with just some basic research.

DOSBox for the comfy MIDIs
Chocolate for the classic look without needing to change options in Crispy and so I can use a modern MIDI player and the digital music packs
Crispy because it has more quality of life options than any other port, like vertical recoil pitch while firing, colored blood, widescreen, built-in brightmaps, etc.
I started using Eternity recently and it's fucking dope. It replaced PrBoom and GLBoom for me, except for when I want to playback demos from DSDArchive, and except for a small minority of WADs that use MP3's like Preacher, and except for when a WAD was specifically designed for OpenGL like Hell Ground. Eternity cannot into low-resolution mode, though, it fucks shit up.
Woof is lit but doesn't have MAPINFO so for Eviternity or Valiant I use Eternity, otherwise I play most of my Boom and MBF maps in Woof because of the comfy Crispy MBF look

We really do need one port to rule them all. It needs to support low-resolution mode without fucking shit up. It needs to be able to play MP3's. It needs to support MAPINFO. It needs to be able to have an OpenGL mode. And it needs to be able to playback demos on DSDArchive

>> No.6987508

>>6987491
It all depends on situations. Map knowledge helps this a lot.
Blood's inventory I fucking love. Useless enemy illumination goggles you don't need and can safely ignore, jump boots you can turn off and on on the fly and can get you all sorts of places, med pack that isn't a useless pile of shit. Only thing I'd change is finding a way to integrate the crystal ball into single player (like letting you see through the eyes of the nearest enemy) and the ability to turn on and off the diving suit.

The UMAPINFO fork of PrBoom+ seems like it'll be doing some of that, maybe not all of it out of the box, but UMAPINFO and maintaining demo compat is supposed to be the first things to get off the ground.

I don't think we'll ever get down to just one single port doing everything, but perhaps some day GzDoom can get some netcode that doesn't suck cock, so that obsoletes Zandybam, and the PrBoom+ fork might potentially make Crispy Doom obsolete, depending on how it develops, then you have Chocolate Doom for authentic vanilla, so in total we may get down to like 3 really solid ports, each with very distinct purposes.
I guess the Unity port will remain as a workable Chocolate Doom substitute for consolefags.

You virtually cannot punch out large monsters like arachnotrons and mancubi because you have to punch the center point INSIDE the monster rather than punch the outside box. GZDoom fixes this. I don't know how people manage to punch out cyberdemons. I suppose they still aren't as wide as mancubi.
And for Scythe map11, I punch out the cacodemon to kill him - do not alert him and just run up to him once his "cage" is opened and start punching.

There are as many takes on this as there are people, if not more. Fresh Supply is okay, though the development getting killed means it has problems that'll never get fixed. BuildGDX is a really good modern port, better than Fresh Supply in regards to gameplay being faithful to the original, but I feel like its renderer is not nearly as faithful as gameplay. Though I suppose only the original Build renderer does shading and depth cueing and sprite drawing 100% right.

kinda. 72 fps can look jittery on a 60hz monitor without vsync. see if "host_maxfps 60" looks smoother than the default 72 in regular quakespasm.
except then at 60 elevator physics can be wonky, so you'd still be better off at 360 using QSS.

I don't want clothing stores. I know many of you haven't even been born in the 20th century, but I reckon this thread has a higher share of boomers like me who know how to operate a dial phone and recorded the music for their first car on tapes.

Should I create a pack of /vr/ games packaged with DOSBox? Mainly targeted towards people who don't play DOSBox so everything should be as simple as possible.

I would include Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and Blood. I would exclude Quake because I don't know how to get it to run normally (it runs in slow-motion if too many particles are on screen) and I would exclude Shadow Warrior because I don't like it. I could include the SW shareware because that is the only version that plays MIDIs (the full version only plays the CD audio which comes with the free GOG SW Classic Complete).

Doom will include the original IWADs and original executables, as well as MBF so that it can launch 2048 Units of /vr/ + the 2048 guns mod, as well as Doom 4 Vanilla and Sigil, which I will also include inside.

Filtering ruins single-pixel wide details on whatever it's applied to due to surrounding pixels "bleeding" into it.
It makes small details like that less distinct.
If the textures of the game have such details, then you should use no filtering.

Filtering is fine if the single detail scale on the texture is bigger than a few pixels on the side, and filter won't make them spill over on the surrounding

On the other hand some consoles like Dreamcast and N64 use texture filtering to purposefully smudge low res textures over the large area where details are not needed

For me, I played the snes version a heap when it came out (only had shareware on dos) and at the time it was "acceptable". I wonder with a slightly bigger ROM if they could have ported the entire 3 eps with all features? It wouldnt have improved the res or framerate, but would have atleast been authentic.

The team that ported doom 2 GBA went above and beyond, and tried their hardest to make a genuine port. They cut a few things, but that was due to the limitations of the hardware

Texture filtering in doom looks like shit because graf can't get it right in fact he seems to fuck with the openGL and vulkan drivers all time and it gets worse every single time
Texture filtering in Quake 1 varies because originally the game wasn't made for it and carmack had to compress it due to video cards back then being shit, which isn't the problem for hexen 2 or other Q1 commercial shit like x-men ravages of apocalypse or hacx
Quake 2 and onwards were made with in mind but they were heavily compressed and blurry due the hardware limits of its timewhich wasn't the problem for those with 3dfx and powervr cards, something that by the time of the 1st gen geforce cards, it was fixed thanks to the community.
There is also the fact that Quake 2 was probably made with higher resolution textures in mind like Unreal's S3 pack.
Quake 3 literally has no issues with it, but the game was compressed even with it turned off.

Yea but his download is ~1.5 gigs, and it doesn't include the DOSBox Pixel Perfect fork (comes with integer scaling on) nor does it come with aspect ratio correction for Doom. It also has a custom resolution with incorrect aspect ratio for Duke - 640x400 instead of 640x480; yes 320x200 is the default resolution but you can select 640x480 in setup and for 320x200 you should use aspect ratio correction. AFAIK you cannot toggle aspect ratio correction on/off while DOSBox is playing so I'd have two .exe's. Anyway, I would just include a few games for /doom/

https://files.catbox.moe/w0df9t.zip
It includes the regular Decorate version, the Zandybam compat version, and the DeHacked version (brought to fantastic life by Brxyz and Hackfraud, thank you VERY much).
The DeHacked version now behaves just like Vanilla weapons, except for the faster pistol, and it seems now that the compatibility options are now resolved.

Thus I'll do this question again, would you as contributor to 2048 Units Of /vr/ be ok with integrating the DeHacked guns into the .wad as the main release, to then have the version without (ergo, plain vanilla) released as the 'Vaccinated Edition' like Valiant? Yes. I guess I should have been more specific. It won't work with simple sprite replacement mods for one. Like, I found some Duke Nukem shotgun sprites that I think look great ( https://files.catbox.moe/5lhfs3.wad ). And the Vanilla Smooth Weapons mod was just an example of a weapons mod that would conflict with 2048 guns since they are both dehacked. But none of that's important; I still support incorporating 2048 guns into the megawad

>> No.6992418

>>6992370
I like the boom itself, initially I thought maybe it'd be too intense, but it kind of fits for the shotgun, and when the chaingunners use it, it has a wonderful thundering sound to it which makes it sound really powerful.
I don't care that much for the pump sound however, it sounds way too exaggerated, less like you're racking the action to a shotgun, and more like you're operating some sort of light artillery piece. For a really huge and exaggerated sci-fi shotgun, this would be excellent, but the 2048 shotgun looks pretty regular, like something you could find in any typical gun store IRL.

I could replace the pump sound on it, but I'm not 100% sure on how to convert the resulting sound so that Boom doesn't turn it into earrape. I do know some guys who can, however.

No, literally just sprites and sounds, since I can't into coding

Here's what I have so far, playtest in Crispy Doom for maximum comfy (it crashes in Chocolate for some reason beyond me):
https://files.catbox.moe/s4vv8d.wad
The pistol sound is from 2048. Vanilla Doom only plays like three pistol sprites, so I used the preacher.wad pistol sprites since I dunno how to translate the 2048 pistol sprites into vanilla. The shotgun sound is from the Doom -1 megawad. The shotgun sprites and Tommy gun sprites are from one of the Immoral Conduct wads, which took the shotgun sprites from douk and removed the foregrip and radiation symbol and added Doom Guy hands, and the Tommy gun is from Blood. The SSG sprites are from Doom Sprite Fix (the vanilla shotgun is off-center, which bothers me) and the SSG sound is also from Immoral Conduct, I think. The plain shotgun was my favorite at first but now the Tommy gun is actually my favorite. Then there are a few miscellaneous sounds that I liked from Doom 64, and the 2048 plasma gun sound as well.

Chocolate Doom lets you use dehacked

MBF is forked from Boom so MBF can run Boom but not vice versa. PrBoom can run both though, it has code from both (so you can use the -dogs parameter in PrBoom for example)

Can you guys help me out? I can't play Raven Keep, as it crashes after it loads the first map after the hub map. I'm getting error with message "allocblock: full". I'm using the correct version of Quakespasm (0.93.2) and I increased the heapsize on my short cut. My shortcut looks like this: "D:\example\folder\quake.exe" -heapsize 999999 -game ravenkeep
Yea I first tried with the documented amount of heapsize, but it didn't help, so I went straight to 999999. That didn't help either. So what to do? It looks like really cool mod, so it's shame that I can't play it.

Anyway, manually toggling the upgrade via console is a shitty solution because you can still re-earn the upgrade, if not in the same map then in the next one.

The source code of the mod is available in the .pak files and it seems easy to disable the upgrades for chaos mode (chaosmode.qc) but I haven't tried compiling .qc code ever.

Have you tried playing Cod of Doody? You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Anyway, I don't think quick melee is THAT important. In Duke the boot is sort of good in early game because enemies are often at point-blank range and it augments the DPS of early weapon, but other Build games lack it for the reason. In Blood, the combat is about blowing up groups of enemies and finishing stragglers with shotgun, which is strong enough that you don't need a kick on top of it. Shadow Warrior also focuses heavily on explosives, and melee works in such a way that depending on the enemy it is either useless or so powerful you don't need a non-melee weapon to go with it.

Yeah, that doesn't work, you will need to either replace or add.
On realm667 there has been recently a kung fu fist added, you can take a look in that file.
If you don't want to just replace sprites ONLY, but also remove/add frames and other stuff, there's no way around making a new actor/class. Realm667 also has beginner tuts pn those topics.

Map 07 is the first bad level in TNT, but you can bear it. TNT actually has a lot of decent and good levels (such as the best iwad Map15), but around the third act, levels start to waver a bunch in quality, some of them start to get awfully long (which may or may not be a problem for you), and some have some pretty questionable design decisions at times.
There's two maps in the last third which are straight up fucking awful, Habitat and Baron's Den, but there's good maps there too, so if you really feel that you hate those maps, well, nobody would really hold it much against you if you just noclipped to the exit to move along to better maps.

I think that TNT also manages to carry itself a lot on atmosphere and exploration at times (making some of the less strong parts feel a bit less weak than they actually are), it's got a great soundtrack for it, and has some very nice visuals to it, managing to really sell the 'used future' aesthetic even better than Doom and Doom 2 already did.

If you do Plutonia or TNT those included 1+2. 64 includes 1+2. Nu-Doom and Eternal include 1+2+64. Until you dive into nu-doom territory you're only hovering around the original games as far as "canon" is concerned.
